Saints re-sign Torrence

By SHELDON MICKLES
Advocate sportswriter

The New Orleans Saints moved to bolster their injury-depleted secondary Tuesday by re-signing cornerback Leigh Torrence and bringing in two safeties for tryouts.

Torrence, who was waived Saturday when the Saints signed running back DeShawn Wynn off their practice squad to add depth at tailback with Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas sidelined by injuries, took the roster spot of reserve strong safety Chris Reis.

Reis, a four-year veteran who is known more for his play on special teams, was put on injured reserve after hurting his right shoulder in the third period of Sunday’s 16-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Reis will be out for the remainder of the season.

Torrence will help shore up the cornerback position on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals after Port Allen native Tracy Porter apparently injured his left knee late in Sunday’s game and will miss 2-4 weeks.

While coach Sean Payton made no mention of Porter’s injury during his Monday news conference, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported Porter suffered a slight tear of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee, the same one that kept him out of four games last season.

The Saints were off Tuesday and will return to practice today, which is when Payton is scheduled to update the injury situation.

Randall Gay or Patrick Robinson, however, will probably start in Porter’s place opposite left corner Jabari Greer. Torrence will also likely figure into the equation, possibly in the nickel or dime packages.

The safety position is also a concern for the Saints.

Strong safety Roman Harper missed last week’s game with a right hamstring injury and it’s not known if he’ll be back this week.

The Saints finished Sunday’s game with only Malcolm Jenkins and Usama Young, a pair of converted cornerbacks, at safety after Pierson Prioleau and Reis were knocked out of the game. Prioleau bruised a lung and could miss this week’s game. The Saints worked out safeties Macho Harris and Pat Watkins on Tuesday, but did not immediately make a roster move.
