Grady Jackson suspended for one game
02:55 PM CST on Tuesday, October 28, 2003

WWLTV.com

Eyewitness Sports has learned that Saints defensive tackle Grady Jackson was suspended by team officials on Tuesday for conduct detrimental to team.

The details of the one game suspension are not known.

Jackson was reportedly already in head coach Jim Haslett’s doghouse after missing Sunday's game against Carolina because of an injured pinky.

Jackson had surgery on the finger last Wednesday, but Haslett and other team officials believed Jackson could have played with the injury.

Well it looks like Grady is the official \"locker room cancer\" this year.

Strange, and I was expecting an upset pick.

Grady Jackson suspended for one game

Associated Press

The New Orleans Saints suspended defensive tackle Grady Jackson for one game on Tuesday, meaning he will miss Sunday\'s game against NFC South Division rival and defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay.

Saints officials said Jackson was suspended for \"conduct detrimental to the team\" but offered no details.

\"We\'re disappointed that he violated a team rule,\" Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said. \"But I really don\'t want to get into it more than that.\"

He was suspended without pay, Loomis said, meaning the suspension will cost Jackson the equivalent of one-sixteenth of his salary.

Jackson and his agent Bus Cook did not return calls.

Jackson missed Sunday\'s game against the Carolina Panthers after surgery to correct a sprained ligament in small finger of his left hand.

Coach Jim Haslett and other team officials believe Jackson could have played with the injury.

Jackson, who\'s pushing 370 pounds, had surgery Wednesday to reattach the ligament.

\"Every individual is different,\" Haslett said. \"If a player can handle it, then he can play.\"

Jackson, along with defensive tackles Norman Hand and Martin Chase, all well over 300 pounds, were known as the `heavy lunch bunch\' last season. The trio came in for criticism after the season. Coaches said their weight had become excessive and hampered their ability to play. Hand and Chase were traded.

Jackson missed the offseason work at the Saints facility, saying he had personal problems and could not be in town for it.

He was demoted from the starting spot at the beginning of training camp, but had moved up again by the time the season started. He weighed 343 at training camp, but his weight has apparently increased since then. Even so, Jackson is considered a talented lineman who can stop the run and defend against the pass.

This season Jackson has 29 tackles, 31/2 sacks for minus-22 yards and three passes defensed.

The Saints used their No. 1 draft pick this spring for defensive tackle Johnathan Sullivan and also picked up veteran defensive tackle Henry Ford. No one has been able to beat Jackson out for the starting spot, however.

Grady Jackson is the size of a Hippo, and has about half of their brain power also. This guy is in the last year of his contract, he should be trying to impress other teams by staying fit and good play. We will definitely need to sign a dominate DT for next season.

I agree that he made some stupid decisions (like staying away from training camp and allowing his weight to get out of hand - AGAIN), but he has played pretty good this year so far. Read the term \"almost Pro-Bowl level\" in some reports.
Not playing through pain - that\'s between Haslett and Grady. But if he thought he couldn\'t help the team because his ability to tackle and generate pressure was severly reduced by the injury (at least that\'s how I would try to sell it to my coach), it should be his decision.
[Note: I\'m obliged to defend him, because I was an outspoken backer of his prior to the season.]
