Brees, Saints put it all together

This was more like it.
This was what we’ve come to expect from the New Orleans Saints, at least since Sean Payton and Drew Brees came to town.
This was efficient offensive football, swarming defensive play and a killer instinct, all wrapped into a tidy little package at half-empty Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

There’s still the missed field goals, whether it’s Garrett Hartley or John Carney, but it wasn’t an issue in the final analysis.)
The Saints drubbed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-6 on Sunday for their first emphatic win of the season. The bar gets set pretty high when you win a Super Bowl championship, and the Saints understand that.
Drew Brees came out with a hot hand and threw the ball around and kept the Saints on the attack. He threw an interception on a tipped pass just before halftime, but the Saints were already ahead 17-0 and playing with the kind of confidence we saw in 2009.
Then there’s Chris Ivory.
Ivory showed a lot of promise in the preseason and is a big, strong running back who rushed for 158 yards on just 15 carries against the Bucs. The Saints clearly miss the injured Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas, but they needed someone to step to the fore and give them offensive balance and Ivory delivered.
The Saints’ offensive line played its best game of the season, easily.
Brees threw deep when the opportunity arose, something he’s almost been reluctant to do this season, and it paid off. The Saints tackled a lot better than they did in last week’s 30-20 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and for the most part, their defense has been pretty steady through six games.
The Saints moved back into a first-place tie in the NFC South with the Atlanta Falcons, who were beaten badly at Philadelphia. They’ll be back at home for their next two games, first against the struggling Cleveland Browns and then in a prime-time game against Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Saints needed some kind of measuring stick to establish themselves as contenders again, and Sunday’s impressive victory was a good starting point.
