The New Orleans Saints on Tuesday terminated the contract of linebacker Clint Ingram, one day before he was expected to begin practicing after spending the first six weeks of the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis confirmed via e-mail to The Advocate late Tuesday night that Ingram’s contract had been terminated, but did not elaborate on the decision to release the five-year veteran.

Ingram signed a one-year contract with the Saints in May after the Jacksonville Jaguars in late April rescinded a $1.266 million tender offer they made to the restricted free agent.

Ingram apparently wasn’t happy with the one-year offer made to him and let the deadline to sign the tender pass, which led the Jaguars to take the deal off the table and make him a free agent.

Ingram, who started 46 games for the Jaguars from 2006-09, came to the Saints after having knee surgery, however, and was not able to take part in their June minicamp, nor was he ready for the start of training camp in late July.

He was put on the physically-unable-to-perform list and remained there when the Saints reduced their roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players on Sept. 4. Under league rules, Ingram had to sit out the first six games while he continued his rehab with team trainers.

Saints coach Sean Payton said during his weekly news conference on Monday that Ingram and All-Pro free safety Darren Sharper, who also was on the PUP list after having off-season knee surgery, would begin practicing with the team on Wednesday.

Once a player who had been on PUP begins practicing, the team has a 21-day window to decide if it wants to put him on the active roster, keep him on reserve/PUP for the remainder of the season or release him.
That was fast.

He may not be ready. Slow is the problem right now. I'm just guessing - evaluation and team physician reports weren't very good. I wish him luck. If he's still hobbled, or palying through and fighting through pain, it would be just a matter of time until his pain becomes ours.

Yeah if he isn't healed or can't go then no point in keeping him at this point.

Hello and goodbye: Saints cut linebacker Clint Ingram

Danny Cox
Just as soon as he was allowed to join the team, he's shown the door.

The New Orleans Saints released linebacker Clint Ingram who was just able to join the team for practice after coming off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list Monday. Ingram signed a one-year deal with the Saints in May after formerly playing with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ingram has not practiced at all with the team as he has been recovering from April knee surgery ever since he signed with the Saints. No full explanation has been given for his release, but it can be thought that he still has not fully recovered from surgery or couldn't pass the team physical.

Safety Darren Sharper also was eligible to return to the team this week from the PUP list.
