FAKE FIELD GOAL

Love the call. As soon as they changed the formation I jumped on my Coffee table screaming YEAH!

Gutsy play calling... Sean will do anything to win a game he has to win.

We didn't do a play out of it but that is all we needed to let other teams know we have a play dialed up and ready to go. So teams have to take time to spend and be ready to defend it. Less time practicing for the next play Sean will dial up.

Halo 11-01-2010 02:13 AM

I was nervous at first, but when I saw Chase holding the ball, I woke up and said "YES" something fun could happen.

Smart of Steelers to call the time out.

Cory9289 11-01-2010 02:35 AM

I'm pretty sure it was just to force the time out so the Steelers couldn't let one rip.

11toby 11-01-2010 02:38 AM

All I could think of was Les Miles...

Did you see Garrett Hartley split out wide right, like he was going to go out for a pass?

Im dying of curiosity to know what they were going to do?

me too. i would love to know what was going to happen

skymike 11-01-2010 08:39 AM

Im kind of glad we didnt run the play, though.

As a cornerback, how fun would it be to jam the FG kicker?

Its gotta be kinda like when there is an interception, and someone "McCray"s the QB.

But Chase Daniel with the ball... that couldve been some fun stuff.

dizzle88 11-01-2010 08:43 AM

I really wanted to see how that played out, Chase would have done us proud i can assure you. But hey, atleast we know that paytons trick book has been opened atleast once, i am expecting a fake field goal in the coming weeks with chase at the helm once again!!

RaginCajun83 11-01-2010 08:58 AM

I was wondering what play Sean had called off of it, I'm just happy to see Sean dipping into his bag of tricks again, seems to be missing most of the season

We were probably going to call a time out if they didn't, lol....

fhotard 11-01-2010 09:29 AM

Even without running the play, it was a GREAT call. It forced Pit to use their time-out.

RaginCajun83 11-01-2010 09:32 AM

Plus it puts something out there that other teams have to prepare for during Saints week that takes time away from their normal practice time when preparing for the Saints

boonedocksaint 11-01-2010 09:32 AM

omg. i cant believe after 2 pages of posts im the first to say it was a dumb call. why? they had a time-out! if they had no time-outs, awesome call. w/ a time-out left, its pointless. it looked awesome for all of five seconds, then tomlin called a time-out. duh.

skymike 11-01-2010 09:33 AM

i think you're overthinking it.

MatthewT 11-01-2010 09:47 AM

I was glad the Steelers called that time out, the FG was the way to go that early in the game. I honestly believe they really had no intention on running the fake, they were way too slow at lining it up. I think it was one of those things to just put something else in the Steelers heads. No one in their right mind would fake in that situation. However, with that being said, we are talking about Sean Payton... LOL

That's exactly what would have happened. We would have burned one of our time-outs just before the play clock ran down. 4th and four, hoping to get a 5-yard offsides penalty for a 1st down. As trigger happy as Sean Payton is, I just don't think he would have come away from that field position with nothing left but his underwear after a failed razzle-dazzle and no points. It would have looked like that fake-dive, end-around bobble-a-boo-boo to Colston "please let me not drop this thing" attempted pass to Henderson that ends in a QB-slide for +1...we needed 4.

Ashley 11-01-2010 09:55 AM

i loved the play as well. now we will have to run that play down the road. especially late in a game when the other team has no time outs left.

I don't think we had one...

I agree that we weren't really going to run a play

SaintsBro 11-01-2010 10:21 AM

It was very much about making them burn that last time out, so that after we kicked a FG they couldn't take the kickoff, heave a bomb on one play and then call time out, kick a field goal of their own. I forget what number the clock was at, but there was exactly that much time left for the Steelers to do precisely that in three plays. Keep in mind, they had been running kicks back pretty darn well against our lousy special teams so far, even opting to run them out from 5 yards deep in the end zone instead of taking the touchback, because they pretty much knew our special teams coverage/coaching is a weak spot on the team.

I think the point of the call was to make PITT use one of their time outs, and it worked to perfection. Now i don't know if they were really going to run the play had pitt not called their time out but it sure was exciting to switch it up like that. Who knows, it was Halloween, with all the voodoo that was in the dome, i wouldn't have been surprised to see hartley catching a 5 yard fade 1 handed in the endzone! might have had a better chance at that then making some "chip shots"!!

Euphoria 11-01-2010 11:54 AM

Still amazes me some of you don't get Sean's play calling. He runs plays to set up other plays in the future. ...and then hit you with something you least expect.

Great call because it forces Pitt to take a time out. It also forces teams to be prepared for it in the future so less time they plan on other things.

Even if the Saints were going to go for the fake you have to know that they were well prepared and have thought about this all week in doing this. Much like the on-side kick in the Super Bowl...

Great example why you really shouldn't question Sean's calls. He calls an onside kick to start the half of the freakin SB!!! REALLY!?!?!

This was a great call that has been overlooked in this game on so many levels. It may come back to help us in future games. Sean plays percentages a lot of the times and then when you least expect it... on-side kick.

there was, i believe, six seconds left in the 1/2. i dont believe this was about making them burn a time-out, at all. i dont think that was there intentions, because, believe me, i had that same though as many of you, last night, when i saw the play stopped by the timeout. then...i looked at the time on the game clock and realized pitt wouldn't have been able to do anything with one timeout, anyways.

i mean, really? you think making them burn a timeout w/ 6 seconds left is that important?

skymike 11-01-2010 03:57 PM

my head hurts.

That was the point, to force them to call a timeout so they can't make any moves when they get the ball.

skymike 11-02-2010 05:44 AM

thats what they were EXPECTING us to do...

bruhahaha.....

Saint_LB 11-02-2010 06:05 AM

I think they were trying to draw them offsides or something...never had any intention of actually carrying the play out.

RaginCajun83 11-02-2010 11:00 AM

From coach's Monday Press Conference

Were you going to fake that field goal?
“Yes.”

It wasn’t just a ploy to get them to use the timeout?
“No. It was a fake. You know that one of two things is going to happen: you’re going to get a chance to run it and see how it looks or you’re going to get a timeout, and they called the timeout.”

My first thought was that they were going to go for it. Then I thought .....no......wait they are trying to get an off sides call. Then when Peyton said he meant to do it I believed him. For anyone that hasn't read Home Team I highly recommend it. It gives you a ton of insight as to how Sean Payton thinks and how he plays the percentages.

Dasidreidia 11-02-2010 03:57 PM

Anyone stop to think that Pittsburgh was gonna ice Hartley anyway?

skymike 11-02-2010 06:41 PM

No one knows how Payton thinks.

Even the Shadow says, "Hell, I give up. I dont know what dude is thinking."
