Todd McShay Mock Draft 1.0

I know it's WAYYYYY too early to even be thinking about the 2011 Draft, and apparently Todd McShay didn't get the memo that the Saints are going to repeat. However, since this is on ESPN Insider, and I don't know who all is a subscriber (wast of my money, I tell ya), but I'm going to show where he predicts us to pick and who he predicts we'll draft. I LOVE the pick, but not the draft position. Of course, he's going by mid-season records:

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft...ory?id=5783980

New Orleans Saints**

Record: 6-3

26. Drake Nevis, DT, LSU
Nevis struggles to get off of blocks, which ultimately could prevent him from being a first-round pick. However, few defensive tackles in the country have his first-step quickness and ability to disrupt plays in the opposing backfield.

I know what you mean. Todd McShay is a moron to begin with for posting a mock draft this early, because anything can happen the rest of the college and NFL seasons. However, I do like his thinking in the Saints drafting Nevis. I've been saying most of the year how much I would love to see this guy in a Saints uniform. Adoyele has been playing above his head this year, I believe, but I could see Nevis and Ellis being a couple of beasts that clog the middle for the Saints defensive line for years to come.

coinflip 11-11-2010 02:13 AM

Oh most definitely! But,like you had said in your previous post.I just don't like the position they have him at in the draft...but ya a beast he would be

I love LSU and but honestly I don't wanna see the Saints draft anymore LSU players. They just don't seem to work out very well on the NFL level, Dorsey, Russel, We had fat Al, Addai has been up and down and so on.

LSU grads don't seem to be that productive in the NFL. I'm sure that there are a couple but I can't think of anyone.

saintsfan1976 11-11-2010 09:39 AM

Too early? Well, what do you think teams like Carolina and Buffalo are talking about right now?

And before we go lopping all LSU players in the "unproductive" category, there are plenty of big school players who don't cut it.

There are too many factors that determine an athlete's level of success - draft team, coaching changes, switching positions, injuries, etc...

papz 11-11-2010 09:49 AM

Nevis has trouble shedding blocks? That's news to me.

Many NFL scouts have a sore spot for failed NFL scouts who enter the media and attempt to critique the work of NFL scouts who have not yet failed.

Even more NFL scouts have a sore spot for guys who were never NFL scouts, couldn't be if they wanted to, and then attempt to critique the work of folks who became NFL scouts.

Once upon a time, Mel Kiper was the primary target of NFL scouts; Kiper has been supplanted by his on-air protege/rival at ESPN, Todd McShay. As McShay's profile increases, and as he takes on the likes of quarterback Jimmy Clausen for reasons that many league insiders believe have no merit, McShay becomes a magnet for criticism.

"Most people at my level feel he is a joke," a veteran NFL scout told us via e-mail. "People in the league respect Kiper. He is not a true scout but he does work at it. A lot of his info he gets from connections in the league, and over the years he has made quite a few. When he was younger he used to burn some bridges. He doesn't do that any more."

So what about McShay?

"McShay does not have any good connections," the source opined. "Higher-ups in the league think he is an arrogant a-hole. A know-it-all. And he really knows nothing. Whatever he says about a quarterback, take it to the bank, it will be the opposite. Remember, last August he stated that Jevan Snead was better than Colt McCoy and would get drafted in the top five. He has yet to publicly retract that statement.

"One of the reasons the kid came out was because of what McShay said. The family thought McShay knew and everyone else was wrong. . . . He has problems with game management, accuracy and leadership among other things, but pretty boy Todd thought he was great because of one good game (the Cotton Bowl) a year ago. McShay is a pretty face who comes across like he knows what he is talking about. He does have good presence, but knows nothing."

A common name we've heard when it comes to McShay is Andre Woodson. McShay championed Woodson during the 2007 season. Woodson ended up being a sixth-round pick, and he's now out of the league.

The teams knew that Woodson wasn't as good as McShay was saying. The problem is that the player and his family don't have access to what the teams are thinking. The player and his family see and hear the stuff that gets played on television, and they tend to believe it when ESPN attaches to the talking head the phony, official-sounding title of "director of college scouting."

I'd rather have Petersen from LSU or Julio Jones.

saintsfan1976 11-11-2010 02:23 PM

Saints wanted Jerry Hughes last year and almost got him. It's time for a dominant DE and the 2011 draft class is flush w DE's and OLB/DE hybrids.

Ryan Kerrigan, DE/OLB - Purdue
Cameron Jorday DE - California
Allen Baily, DT/DE - Miami

I could see RB also.

Where's Hagan when you need him? Papz - can you conjure up our old buddy?

papz 11-11-2010 02:36 PM

Haven't talked or seen him around in quite sometime. He had a lot of things going on he had to deal with. I'm not sure we're going to have our draft info machine around this offseason... hopefully he'll be back.

How about our own Devery Henderson?

which category are you putting him in? it changes game to game

|Mitch| 11-11-2010 05:00 PM

Devery has been productive the past 2-3 years, and fixed his drop problem.

Got off to a slow start at the start of this season as did the whole offense. Seems to be working on his drop problem the past couple of games though

I could see NONE of these guys getting drafted by the Saints this year, this team passed on a couple hybrids in the later rounds that were on the board this year so why would anything change this time around

I think he just means guys that play for of have played for the Saints.Devery is the only one that I can come up with that has panned out. He's only avg.

Danno 11-12-2010 06:13 PM

Marcel Darius, DE/DT Alabama

3-4 DE or 4-3 DE/DT. He's 90% recovered from knee injury and still dominates most games.

Probably gone when we pick but you never know about those tweeners.
