Why, Payton, Why? Reliance on Reggie Bush almost costs Saints

Malcolm Jenkins saved Sean Payton from himself Sunday evening at Cowboys Stadium.

Payton succumbed to an old, bad habit, trying to force feed a rusty Reggie Bush into the plan when he had no business being on the field. The result could have been catastrophic for the Saints’ hopes of repeating as Super Bowl champions, winning the NFC South and even making the playoffs in the crowded NFC picture.

That’s where Jenkins stepped in. With New Orleans on the verge of blowing a game it led 17-0, he tracked down Dallas wide receiver Roy Williams as he was streaking for what would have been the clinching touchdown, ripped the ball away from him at the 11 and gave the Saints new life in the final minutes.

Drew Brees responded by leading an 89-yard touchdown drive as the Saints won 30-27 in a game they never would have been in position to lose without a pitiful performance from Bush.

Bush, coming off an eight-game layoff due to a broken fibula, was not ready to return in a meaningful contest. That fact should have been clear on his first snap, when he entered on third-and-5 at the New Orleans 26 and never looked for the ball when Brees threw a pass to him in the flat early in the second quarter. It bounced off his helmet, the Saints punted after scoring on their first three possessions and they began to lose control against the Cowboys.

Bush accelerated that process rapidly.

With the Saints leading 20-13 in the third quarter, he ran a delay route and was wide open in the middle of the field on third down from the Dallas 10. Brees hit him in the hands with no one in between him and the goal line.

Drop.

New Orleans settled for a field goal that made the score 23-13.

When the Saints stopped the Cowboys on their next possession, Payton decided to let Bush return his first punt since the injury. Bush did what he does more often than anything else – retreat. There’s a reason he finished second-to-last in the NFL in punt returns last season.

Then he did that other thing that happens too often – fumble.

I don't think he should have been doing returns the first day back after an 8 week offseason for injury.

Why do we slowly work Ivory in but Bush gets thrown to the wolves?

UK_WhoDat 11-26-2010 11:48 AM

And that there is Reggie Bush.

That writer has really gone off on one re: Bush. Or is it against Payton.

Yep we can simplify Bush into the 3 plays last night. But I feel that Bush is an unique Football player that causes great anxieties to opposing teams. I feel that the offense opens up when Bush is there. We need a fit and ready Bush.

You and I wanted him out for some practice in the last game and a chance to ease back into the routine. Others wanted him kept on the sideline like some secret weapon. Sorry, after 8 weeks everyone would be rusty and then he's on TV at Dallas for his return?!! No one could see that this wasn't a grand idea?!! He wanted to do sooo much and he blew it. Ease back in Reggie! Most fans have short term memory problems anyway.....

I remember that conversation being about him being 100% healthy, not the fact that he'd be rusty.

In fact the entire conversation was about him not being 100% healthy and returning punts. I don't remember rust ever being mentioned.

I bet if Bush were thrown to the wolves, the wolves would catch him.:)

niteadept 11-26-2010 12:29 PM

You say tomato and I say ppppffffttttt. Everything that was said and you only pick up the word rusty?! We are all Saints fans (or most of us anyway) so let the talking pundits dissect Bush and let Bush and the rest of the team get back on the practice field, do what they do and finish this season with another SB win. Enough said on this subject.

SAINT_MICHAEL 11-26-2010 12:30 PM

That first swing pass that hit him in the head was sort of a no-win situation too. If he had caught it he would have been nailed as soon as he did...maybe even had caused another fumble. No excuse on him dropping the potential TD pass though. I think Payton putting him back there to field that punt may have been his way of giving him a chance to make up for not catching that pass. I'm not saying I agree with that thinking, but it may have played into it.

lynwood 11-26-2010 12:48 PM

Nothing to really talk about. Bush didn't cost us or win us the game. Dallas played themselves back into it.

BIGEASY504 11-26-2010 12:53 PM

I didn't mind the plays he was in but that punt return was not Sean you must thank Jenkins for that game; I hope Bush practices be all out cause he's going to have to get football ready and against the Cowboys it was clear he wasn't.

st thomas 11-26-2010 03:10 PM

putting bush to return the punt was not the best call i've seen payton make this year. not even to make him fair catch it. no, no, no. bad call. i know its the fall off the horse get right back on thing but not 8 games later coach.

QBREES9 11-26-2010 11:21 PM

He has to play to get the RUST off. He'll be great next week

I watched that play several times. He could have gotten some yards from what I saw. The fumble, he was trying to make up for it when it wasn't needed. How many times has he just gone down or got next to nothing on a return. If anything, I hope they all learned a lesson from Roy to do what is needed and put your ego aside.

Saintswrath 11-27-2010 09:15 AM

I agree, it was indeed a bad call by Sean Payton, could have been very costly..
Had it been about 5 mins left in the game with us having a 20 pt lead i would have given it a go but a whole half? Sean Payton got cute again.

It was a great defensive play on the fumble. The defender swatted dead on the ball from behind, it wasn't like a muffed punt. Now the dropped pass is a different story. 9 out of 10 times that's a TD. That was a sign of rust in my opinion. Bush not up to game speed just yet. He'll be fine after next week.

Euphoria 11-27-2010 11:30 PM

Sorry I don't buy into being rusty.

He is a professional. It isn't like he was sitting at home eating Bon Bon's on his sofa the whole time.

He is exactly who he has been since he has been here in NO. Sure he can make something special happen but every time you give him the ball you have to hold your breathe.

dasaints26 11-28-2010 04:40 AM

After the game Payton said he put Bush in to return punts because Moore told him he was having trouble with the lights. Bush didnt have any rust that was the same play he made before he got hurt, fumbled a punt.

I looked up a cool stat. Reggie has less rushing yards than the quarterback for the Eagles. No big deal of course Vick has more yards rushing than Bush but I was surprised to see that Kolb has more yards too.

CheramieIII 11-28-2010 08:03 AM

Reggie is no longer a secret weapon but may an Albatross. He needs to be running the ball out of the backfield until he gets the hang of this football thing again. I tweeted Reggie the other day and told him that MJ saved his lunch and he should be thankful cuz the media would've ripped him apart if the Saints lost.

subguy 11-28-2010 10:52 AM

I have voiced this many times and get branded as a Bush hater. He is the highest paid diversion in the NFL. He scares me everytime he touches the ball. Bush is the same old Bush he has not improved or declined. I feel the same thing would've easily happened had he not missed 8 games.

I feel that Bush has made alot of big plays for us, but at the same time, he has made almost as many mistakes. He is a talented player, but someone said this a long time ago: He is always looking for a homerun, when sometimes he must reallize, all the team needs is a base hit. Team first, Reggie second, in that order. Take what they give you, and if you need to fair catch, then fair catch. If he would get this through his helmet, then I think he would be a much better player for it.
