ARLINGTON — Roy Williams couldn’t look.
When David Buehler lined up for a 59-yard field goal with 31 seconds left, Williams was on the Dallas Cowboys sideline with his head down.

“I thought it was good at first from what I was hearing,” Williams said, “but then all of a sudden, I heard silence.”

That told Williams there would be no overtime, that he would leave the field as one of the biggest goats in franchise history. Buehler’s kick was plenty long, but it barely missed wide left with 25 seconds remaining.

Aided by Williams’ shocking fumble with 3:03 left, the New Orleans Saints  bounced back from blowing a 17-point lead to eke out a 30-27 win before 90,985 on Thursday.

“I lost the ballgame. I will say that,” a dejected Williams said. “I let my teammates down.”

In their Thanksgiving Day debut, the Saints (8-3) led 17-0 entering the second quarter and 20-3 just before halftime.

Undaunted, Dallas (3-8) scored on three straight possessions before taking the lead 27-23 on Tashard Choice’s 1-yard touchdown plunge with 5:51 remaining.

After their defense forced a quick three-and-out, the Cowboys appeared to be on their way to the upset after Williams caught a Jon Kitna pass on a slant and sprinted toward the end zone.

But just seconds after Williams switched the ball from his right hand to his left, Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins stripped it loose and recovered at New Orleans’ 11.

I disagree that Roy Williams is a goat. I think it was more a case of Malcolm Jenkins making a terrific play than Roy screwing up.

The writer does not make much of the string of errors that the Saints committed. He seems to be suggesting that the CowPies would have won the game without that one strip/fumble. I would propose that barring their own mistakes, the Saints would have won this game fairly easily.

It was a great play by Jenkins. Almost everyone would have dropped that. The goat was their defense by getting carved in 3 plays down the field immediately after.

This was more satisfying than blowing out the Cowboys. To have them fight back and collapse at the last moment in all aspects was rapture. Stressful as hell to experience but the end justified the means.

@lummox

I respectfully disagree. It's games like this that nearly give me heart attacks lol. Even the Seattle game really torked me off because we should have won by about 2,000 points or so.
