Saints signed LB Kawika Mitchell... Betts on IR

Saints signed LB Kawika Mitchell.

Mitchell began the year on the Bills' injury list but was eventually released after negotiating an injury settlement. The veteran will give the Saints some nice depth but won't be counted on to make much of an impact.

Saints placed RB Ladell Betts on injured reserve with a neck injury, ending his season.

Betts has missed the last two games, and with Pierre Thomas slated to return this weekend he's no longer needed. Linebacker Kawika Mitchell has replaced him on the roster.

per rotoworld

Very low risk signing... was a solid player prior to injury. Might be a Cox or Morgan signing but we've got nothing to lose here.

You're quick yourself... it just so happens I was at lunch.

Halo 12-08-2010 12:03 PM

Our defense MUST stop the late 4th quarter points they have allowed.

biloxi-indian 12-08-2010 12:10 PM

Halo,

Not debating your comment re; Saints defense, but when ST gives an opponent the ball on the 40 or Saints kick it out of bounds...then surely ST needs some shoring up as well.

I will go out on a limb and say the Saints ST SUCK! LOLOLOLOLOL

Replacement For Shanle!

Better Stats than Shanle over all.

Better Sack Stats than Vilma.

23 lbs heavier... 4.5-4.6 40 yd
Pretty much the same combine stats as Vilma but a little heavier.

While Mitchell did spend a brief time at WLB, his most successful position has been MLB. I assure you he was picked up to backup and spell Vilma, if need be. Don't forget that our MLB backup, Stanley Arnoux, was just placed in injured reserve.

TheOak 12-08-2010 01:41 PM

Damn! I would rather Strawberry Shortcake at OLB than Shanle.

Rugby Saint II 12-08-2010 02:08 PM

Low risk.....high reward. It sounds like another typical front office move.

AsylumGuido 12-08-2010 02:22 PM

Kawika was a very solid MLB with the Chiefs. I liked him a lot. In 2007 he went to the Giants and then moved to Buffalo in 2008.

dizzle88 12-08-2010 02:29 PM

When ive seen the Giants or Bills play the past couple years, i've heard the name Kawika Mitchell mentioned a hell of a lot. The guy gives us some more depth at that position, maybe they will put him on special teams aswell?

Turbo Saint 12-08-2010 04:08 PM

oooo i like this signing...hope he stays healthy...he's a beast.

saintsfan601 12-08-2010 06:44 PM

I like it.I hope he does have an impact.

UK_WhoDat 12-08-2010 06:53 PM

BAd luck on Betts but he wasn't gonna get snaps now anyway.

Mitchell. Sure he is low risk but he was on an injury settlement only just recently so how fit can he be. There is no doubt he is NFL mentally ready though

st thomas 12-08-2010 06:54 PM

is his name pronounced cavika, i remember a solid player by that name or is it in another sport?

UK_WhoDat 12-08-2010 07:16 PM

Did you know this guy has a SB ring.......

504state 12-08-2010 07:33 PM

This is a huge signing. I have wanted this guy for a while. He was a big part of the Giants road to the SB and capable of starting. I think Gregg Williams in time can find the best in this guy. Look for him to be one of our top defensive players. The Giants were just stacked with talent, and since leaving I just dont think he has had the coaching he needs. He is a potential beast.

504state 12-08-2010 07:34 PM

BTW his nickname is KIWI

As fit as PT?

alleycat_126 12-09-2010 07:18 AM

Bad luck, and then worse luck for betts, Bad luck for him of course other Saints RBs getting healthy (He would have probably gotten waived). Worse luck he got hurt. On the Mitchell signing, what I know of him is that he is active and around the ball alot. Low risk, high reward like every body else that is on this roster. We'll put the hunger in him an he'll be one hellva sign late in the season. Plus he can spell, Vilma and has some experience playing on Shanle's side so I wouldn't rule out some spelling of Shanle as well.

ScottF 12-09-2010 11:22 AM

Not sure if he actually hits the field or is an insurance policy.
reading between the lines I believe this means PT is almost a certain go for Sunday---do we dress 4 RB's plus a FB and sit a TE?

darstep 12-09-2010 12:07 PM

Sit a tight-end, spread the field and work the ball around and frustrate the Rams into submission. Reggie and PT get increased work with Ivory carrying the day.

QBREES9 12-09-2010 12:39 PM

This is a good thing. YES !!!!

Saintswrath 12-09-2010 06:24 PM

We really need to do something about Shanle.

pherein 12-09-2010 06:33 PM

Im reposting because I did this in the wrong area

Hes not a tackling machine like lewis or urlacher, but seems to be equal to Vilma, and is defiantly better than spoon. We also made Vilma better, and he seems to be in his prime.Nice pickup.

Crusader 12-10-2010 04:47 AM

The more I read the more intresting he sounds. The Mighty Kiwi!
Hopefully this means we don't HAVE to draft a LB with the 32nd overall pick but can draft a DE or just BPA.
