I remember Gruden said there would be MAJOR changes.

I think this would qualify as major.

Yeah, big difference between release and deactivate. He\'ll be traded away in the offseason, I know he\'s mentioned that he would go to Dallas if given the opportunity. the way the Cowboy receivers played this past weekend, I\'m sure Tuna would welcome him with open arms.

Damn, this is a desperation move. I don\'t really see what it does for the Bucs other than say Gruden is pissed and nobodys safe. This team is imploding........ great

ESPN.com news services
In the latest shocking development from a championship defense gone awry, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have deactivated former All-Pro wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson for the rest of the season, ESPN.com\'s Len Pasquarelli reports.

According to Pasquarelli, Tampa Bay likely will look to trade Johnson after the season, as it believes there are several teams that are interested in acquiring his services. The NFL\'s trade deadline for this season passed in October.

Although the team has not yet released an official reason for the move, Johnson had openly complained in recent weeks about not getting enough passes thrown his way and his on-again, off-again relationship with Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden is well documented.

An eight-year veteran and the No. 1 overall pick in the 1996 NFL draft, Johnson has 45 catches for 600 yards and three touchdowns this season -- his fourth in Tampa Bay after starting his career with the New York Jets. For

Now it\'s being reported that Keyshawn and Gruden got into a fight and he was told to get his stuff and not come back...

The more I hear the more I love it. As much smack as this team talks it is good to see some of there own arrogance and attitude bite back.

I don\'t like all of this. It could bring the Bucs down, but it could lite a fiire under their azz and we don\'t need that. They sucked just fine the way they were. :exclam:

Man, that team is crumbling right before Chuckie\'s eyes! Sapp is overrated and gone next year anyway. I suppose it could light a fire under \'em, but I see it going downhill fast for the Sucs...ummm...I mean the Bucs.

Could there be a worse scenario for a team that just won the Superbowl? I think not, and GOD I love IT!!!!!!!!!!

:P

I\'m with ya Saintfan sounds like the wheels are flying off that wagon. I can hardly wait to hear what Keyshawn has to say about all this. I hope he stirs up a crap storm that buries the whole team. Burn Baby Burn!!!

Where is BucnUp when you really need him?
Got to love seeing Tampa self destruct.

You know, the scary part of this is: Warren Sapp and KeyShawn Johnson in black and gold

While I\'m not saying that Keyshawn is a bad player, and I didn\'t see the game this week. I do remember seeing him drop alot of passes this year. I remember getting tired of hearing him claim that he\'s \"making plays\" and \"is open all the time\" and that they just won\'t throw him the ball.

If he goes to Dallas and drops passes like that for Parcels...... he\'s gonna get let go again!

Maybe it\'s easier than that, gator. If they terminated his contract, they would take a pretty hefty hit against the salary cap. Right now they are only less than 400,000 $ under, making it impossible to just release him.
Releasing him now would be insanity even if his money for the rest of the season isn\'t guaranteed (which it may be). They would have to ask themselves how much a high draft pick - maybe round 2 - is worth to them. You also have to take into consideration how your cap will be influenced by such a decision. Decision is simple: Keep him on the roster for 7 more weeks, hope at least 2 teams get into a bidding war over him and ship him out of town in the spring.

Nailed it Nocloning, if the Bucs cut Keyshawn the guarenteed part the contract, the unpaid portion of the 13 million sigining bonous would accelerate to now. The resulting cap hit (8-9 mil) would place them way over the salary cap. He is due a roster bonus of 1 milion next year and the Bucs said they are willing to pay it to controll his rights in 2004 and ensure they get compensation for him.

It was also mentioned this morning on ESPN radio that he has a \"no breach\" clause in his contract. They say they will trade him in March, but who is going to take a veteran contract that is guaranteed to pay $5 million the next two years, and $8 million in the final year of his contract?

My lord - you guys are overthinking this thing. You got Gator in here talking about the Uniform Commercial Code and the like, BnB talking about \"no breach\" clauses, etc.

It\'s really quite easy. If the Bucs cut Keyshawn they lose money. No Gator, not b/c he is going to go running to court to sue them - gimme a break, have you ever seen an NFL player do that? They will lose money b/c they\'ve guaranteed him money and if they cut him they will be forced to continue to pay him anyway.

However, if they deactivate him it equates, from the team\'s perspective, to him being cut b/c he doesn\'t show up to practices, meetings, games, etc., but come year end, they can get something of value for him (i.e. another player, draft pick, etc.), and in the process, rid themselves of this liability by forcing another team to take on the contract obligations.

I\'m pretty sure the UCC hasn\'t entered Keyshawn\'s mind just yet Gator. ;)

I\'m going to go out on a limb and say that the journalist that mentioned the \"no breach\" clause on the radio wouldn\'t have mentioned it if it wasn\'t relevant to the situation. Once again, I\'m going out on a limb in the hopes that today\'s journalists, while suprising at times, are not quite that dumb.
Overthinking? No, just passing along what I thought would be relevant to the topic, just something heard on ESPN radio on my way home from work. And once again I pose the question, who would be willing to take a head case with a fat contract that balloon\'s into a fatter contract in the final year? New Orleans? No thanks- I\'d be pissed if they took that on.

Coach Speak: Ditka on Keyshawn
Pro Football Hall of Famer Mike Ditka provides expert analysis for the Coach Speak segment on NFL Total Access. Here\'s what Ditka had to say regarding the deactivation of wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson (aired Nov. 18, 2003).

Mike Ditka: You take a championship team and I think when you are going to be a champion, everybody knows they have to contribute. All of a sudden you become a champion, and too many people say, \"I\'m the reason we were the champion.\" No. Everybody is the reason. It\'s a shame. I don\'t know what\'s happened. I\'m sure it\'s a disciplinary thing. It\'s something that he said or did or I don\'t think the coaching staff or the ownership down there would have done that. Keyshawn is a heck of a football player. I have great respect for him. But, you have to do what\'s right. You can\'t put yourself above the team.

Rich Eisen: But is he being made the scapegoat for all that has gone wrong this season in Tampa Bay?

Ditka: I believe that. I believe he really is. I believe right now the ship is sinking and they are trying to right it and I don\'t think they can right it. And they are saying, \"Keyshawn, you are the example that is going to be set for the rest of the year.\" I don\'t think that\'s right either.

Eisen: Wasn\'t Keyshawn saying the same things last year when they won the Super Bowl?

Ditka: He was saying it and he said it all this year too. They have come to the point right now, a realization that they are not going to make the playoffs, so they are going to point the finger at somebody and say, \"You are going to be the scapegoat for my team in 2003.\"
