Free agency could significantly impact New Orleans Saints' 2011 roster

By James Varney, The Times-Picayune

SEATTLE - Injuries aside, the New Orleans Saints' roster is liable to look much different in 2011. The exact nature of the upcoming free agency market remains unknown because the NFL's collective bargaining agreement with the players' union will end the first week of March.

But by the rules that existed under the old arrangement, the Saints would have a whopping 28 players as unrestricted free agents. Those with six or more years in the league are running backs Ladell Betts and Julius Jones, fullback Heath Evans, center Jonathan Goodwin, safeties Darren Sharper, Pierson Prioleau and Matt Giordano, linebacker Scott Shanle, Kawika Mitchell and Danny Clark; defensive linemen Anthony Hargrove and Jimmy Wilkerson and long snapper Jason Kyle.

We'll have a much different team next year for sure. It sure was nice during the ride though.

Let some of our guys walk then we will get comp picks.

Jonathan Goodwin too

Agreed. I see one must name in Kyle, three hopeful names in Evans, Hargrove and Goodwin. Other than that, no big deal.

Loomis likes the short term deals and puts a lot of FAs on a one year contract. I think the roster is going to be changed by at least 25%.

Danno 01-11-2011 07:11 AM

Jonathan Goodwin
Anthony Hargrove
Roman Harper
Lance Moore
David Thomas
Jermon Bushrod
Remi Ayodele

The rest are basically journeymen and easily replacable

Don't forget, because of the CBA expiration, EVERY team has a bunch more free agents than they normally do.

ClintSaints 01-12-2011 12:39 AM

I do not believe next year's team will be all that different.

The following are must keeps:
Carl Nicks
Chris Reis (total HERO of Super bowl 44)
Lance Moore
Courtney Roby (sorely missed in the playoff game)
Pierre Thomas
Jeff Charleston
Jason Kyle
Jonathan Goodwin

Would like to have back:
Darren Sharper (want to see if he has a big rebound year)
Jermon Bushrod
Danny Clark
Tony Hargrove
Jo Lonn Dunbar
Pierson Prioleau
David Thomas
Zach Strief
Leigh Torrence (he intercepted Pig Pen ha ha ha)
Garrett Hartley
Remi Ayodele
Marvin Mitchell

Not sure about some of the others and way too mad at Roman Harper right now to even think about him.

Heard Mike Dellier say Matt Tenant is the future here.

TheDeuce 01-12-2011 08:18 AM

I only care about keeping Lance Moore and Carl Nicks.

papz 01-12-2011 09:42 AM

I've always supported Goodwin but with all the re-signings and upgrades that need to take place, he's replaceable. Tennant was one of the top centers in the draft when we selected him... I think he'll be capable of taking over if Goodwin's contract isn't re-upped.

Moore and Nicks are the must keeps. I'd like to retain PT and Charleston also... everyone else is replaceable.

saintsfan1976 01-12-2011 09:48 AM

Tennant is the new Faine.
Eager to see if Brown can supplant Bushrod.
Stinchcomb - will be back.

If Harper isn't brought back, a lot of hard feelings after his performance against Seattle, Sharper could be a solution, at least for one year, at strong safety. He played there in Minnesota. Yeah, he's old, but I never seen him run down by a QB. Best of all, there won't be as many blown coverages and miscommunications with a HOFer back there. We could draft a Safety and Sharper could be a mentor. Sharper should be cheaper than Harper, too.

What do you guys think?

saintsfan1976 01-12-2011 10:15 AM

I think Harper was exploited well by Seattle.
He's better in run support than coverage.
He had a bad game.
We missed Jenkins.

Wish we could've used him more to blitz Hasselback.

CRAP!!!!!!

st thomas 01-12-2011 11:30 AM

during the game one of the broadcasters said that if someone went to block harper he seemed to give up his coverage and it worked 3 times.

Every team is in a similar boat to the saints. It all will depend on marketing. There are a lot of guys who want the ring. And there are many more who only want to cash in. I just hope that mr. Brees doesn't think he's entitled to so much that all we can field is a bunch of journeymen. Just because they wear a sb ring doesn't mean they were the only reason everyone else is wearing one. Remember, this was an uncapped year. Next season will have a cap enforced, and if you think that injuries hurt us THIS year, wait. We need depth - overpriced talent is no longer a luxury.

So you are saying Faine SUCKED? Because if you are then I will agree on that point.

Outside of that I know know if Tennant is ready.
