Payton: Saints will take time finding new DB coach

Bradley Handwerger / Eyewitness Sports

MOBILE, Ala. – Sean Payton stood in the stands of Mobile’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium, watching Senior Bowl practice out of the corner of his eyes while speaking with reporters about replacing Dennis Allen as the team’s secondary coach.

The subtle message?

There’s more going on that Payton and the Saints organization must look at than a defensive assistant coach.

“We’ll take our time here,” Payton said. “We’ve got plenty of time with filling his position. We’ll do it like we have before.”

They should fill the position with Shanon Sharpe!

DB coach / back up if needed.

is it dumb of me to think sharper would be a decent choice for this position?

Not a bad idea, but there's a huge difference between playing the position and teaching.

Sharper was extremely talented. You can't teach talent.

Most of the time the best teachers are the guys who didn't have phenominal talent, but overachieved by utilizing their talents to the fullest.

Sharper may become a good teacher since his mental awareness of the game was so sharp. The question is can he transfer that knowledge to a player with different skill sets or who thinks differently than Darren does.

Art Shell, Mike Singletary, Jim Zorn comes to mind...

...though Shell was stuck with Al Davis and Zorn coached for Dan Snyder...
