Greg Williams on Titans Radar?

With Jeff Fisher out as coach of the Tennessee Titans, Gregg Williams’ name is being tossed around as a possible replacement.

There’s some logic in that because the New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator has deep ties to that franchise. Williams was an assistant there starting in 1990 when it was still the Houston Oilers, until 2000. He left to become the head coach in Buffalo and remains a popular figure in Tennessee.

He's also very close friends with Jeff Fisher.

I don't think he takes the job.

every time a team mentions a coaching change greg williams name is somehow brought up. talk to me when he goes on an interview

Deep ties? Really? No more than he has to Jacksonville or Buffallo. I think they already have their guy and it is in house.

QBREES9 01-28-2011 10:19 PM

I'll bet he stays.

They will hire Heimerdinger the OC. Williams wouldn't take the job out of respect for Fisher. Fisher is one of his friends.

I don't believe we have to worry about Gregg Williams going anywhere for now. He really has it good with the Saints. The Saints are also getting pretty close to having a great defense, I am sure he wants to see it through. I mean a little more help with the front 7 and it's going to be all good. The secondary is pretty much built.

I think this job is more appealing to him than Denver was...I think this one has his attention

I'm going to tell everyone right now that Williams goes nowhere until the Saints don't make the playoffs, which is a few years down the road. Anyone in their right mind would stay because he has a chance to go to the Superbowl the next 4 or 5 years, with someone else not for at least 4 or 5 years. You do the math.

I love when Yasinkas starts a blog with "there's some logic in this"...

You can't hold an Assistant Coach back from a head job and if it happens that would be good for GW (no not George Washington). But seriously puts The Saints behind the eight ball to search for a quality replacement that doesn't require on the job training.

I said this in one of the Denver speculation threads -- the wild card about Gregg Williams as a head coach, is that he will almost certainly want to take his son Blake with him, and I'd assume he probably will want to give him a really good position -- something better than what he has now as an assistant with the Saints, a 'promotion' such as maybe a real coordinator position, etc. So not only does the Head Coach have to be a better position for Gregg, it almost certainly has to involve a better situation for Blake Williams as well. And nothing against his son, but the guy is really young and probably not quite ready for that yet. So if you are a team that is looking at Gregg Williams to be your coach, that is a bit of a gamble right there. It makes him less attractive. I think he stays for a couple more years, at least, then moves on into exactly that kind of situation -- him as head coach, and his son as offensive or defensive coordinator. I really don't see him leaving unless that type of opportunity happens.
