Saints News
Saints win looked good to coach

The Associated Press
12/1/03 7:31 PM

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The New Orleans Saints had only 54 yards passing, converted just one third-down attempt in six tries, and trailed the Washington Redskins 14-10 at halftime.

They didn\'t set the world on fire in the second half either, but New Orleans did enough to pull out a 24-20 victory in a game that the coach thought was a lot better than many people believed.

\"I picked the paper up this morning and some people said it was an ugly win, it was sloppy,\" Haslett said. \"It was anything but that. I thought it was a good game. I thought it was well executed.\"

The Redskins had a very good offensive game plan, Haslett said, but the Saints adjusted to it.

\"The big thing was this -- we didn\'t turn the ball over and we had one penalty on offense,\" Haslett said.

The Saints (6-6) needed to beat the Redskins to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. They fought back in the third quarter to tie the game at 17-17, then let Washington go ahead 20-17 in the fourth quarter, before finally clinching it on a 15-yard pass from Aaron Brooks to Boo Williams.

The Saints offense struggled early, Haslett said, but started clicking in the second half. Quarterback Aaron Brooks, who had completed 7 of 16 in the first half, finished 14 of 30 for 121 yards.

\"Aaron threw the ball well, Boo made some nice catches,\" Haslett said. \"I thought the passing game really picked up in the second half.\"

When pinned down, however, the big difference in the passing game was less Saints plays than Redskins problems, he acknowledged.

\"We never really got a lot of yardage,\" Haslett said. \"The two big plays we got were really the pass interference plays.\"

Saints receiver Joe Horn drew two pass interference calls against Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey, accounting for 54 penalty yards and setting up two of the New Orleans\' three touchdowns in the game.

The penalties supplemented another big game from Deuce McAllister, who had 165 yards rushing and 31 yards receiving.

New Orleans plays Tampa Bay (5-7) Sunday. The defending Super Bowl champions are also on the brink of falling out of post season contention.

The Saints have three of their remaining four games at home. Three of the four teams they have left also have losing records. All six of New Orleans\' victories have come against teams with losing records, their six losses against teams with winning records.

Playing struggling teams doesn\'t ensure a Saints win, Haslett said. Tampa Bay will be tough no matter the record. But the Saints aren\'t out of the postseason picture yet, he maintained.

\"I think we have a pretty good football team,\" he said. \"We have done some things in some games that you can\'t do and win. Against Philadelphia we turned the ball over three times. It\'s hard to win when you turn the ball over three times. I\'ll say this, down the stretch in this next month, if we take care of the football and eliminate mistakes, then we\'ll have a chance to win every game.\"
