No. 24 pick might yield familiar name for New Orleans Saints

By Mike Triplett, The Times-Picayune

The last time the New Orleans Saints held the No. 24 pick in the draft was 1988, when they selected one of the most memorable players in franchise history -- fullback Craig "Ironhead" Heyward.

How fitting it would be, then, if The Times-Picayune mock drafts come to fruition three weeks from now. Both James Varney and I project the Saints will use the 24th pick on Ironhead's son, Ohio State defensive end Cameron Heyward.

We didn't just make those picks out of sentimentality, or because Varney is a die-hard Buckeyes fan. We both believe the younger Heyward would be a perfect fit in the Saints' front seven, where they need to add youth and athleticism.

At 6 feet 5, 294 pounds, Heyward has the size, versatility and savvy the Saints covet in their 4-3 alignment. He can help as a pass rusher and run defender and could eventually start at the end from fellow Buckeye Will Smith.

It's just an added bonus that Heyward has black-and-gold blood running through his veins, having spent the first four years of his life in New Orleans.

I would not oppose that pick. From what I've read I think he'll be a good one.

I love this guy I wouldn't made at all if the Saint got him, my only problem is why all these experts don't have him as a first round pick. I don't see him on any first round mock drafts.

if payton, GW, and loomis want him by golly i'm on board, bbbuuuuttt i don't think hes our guy at 24. if we trade down and promised him great but not that speed rusher we really want.

I really don't see this happening. Unless he the Best Player on the Board.

wish him well; but a one year wonder and his Daddy, God Bless him, was lazy when you consider the talent he had...

Good size and versatility as he could line up outside or inside in a 4-3 alignment or outside in a 3-4 alignment. More of a power pass rusher than an edge rusher IMO. He showed he was the best player on the field in the Sugar Bowl against a very athletic Arkansas offense. I think the cons of him not being as productive as expected his senior year are overrated due to the injuries (ankle) he played with. Showed what he is capable of when healthly and motivated in the Sugar Bowl. I like other pass rushers' ceiling in the draft, but Heyward's versatility would serve well in our defensive line rotation.

Damn I hope not!!! This guy is gonna be a bust. If we go DE in the first I say we go Ryan Kerrigan or Aldon Smith. If they are both gone then I say we should look at LB's and go DE in the 2nd. We need to get 2 LB'S in the first 3 rounds. I'm tired of over looking the LB position when it comes to the draft.

I was actually mad when we drafted Jenkins because the guy I wanted was Clay Mathews, although I think Jenkins will be a very very good player for many years to come and even a pro bowler, Clay is just on a different level.

skymike 04-14-2011 04:36 PM

we could have had clay mathews?

gandhi1007 04-14-2011 05:24 PM

Yep, he was the 28th pick and I believe we had the 14th pick, but oh well that's in the past, we need to address the LB position in this draft.

In the first give me either, Ryan Kerrigan, Aldon Smith, Akeem Ayers, Muhammed Wilkerson or Mark Ingram (only if those defensive guys I mentioned are gone)

I would love for either Bruce Carter or Martez Wilson to fall into our lap in the 2nd round.
