Is Loomis the best GM in the NFL?

When Sean Payton came to New Orleans in '06 Mickey Loomis was already running the FO. Payton came to New Orleans because he truly believed that Mickey Loomis was prepared, knowledgeable and had a long term vision for this team. We have benefited tremendously from Mickey Loomis, but is he the best?
The Patriots front office is consistently making chess like moves in the draft to gain more picks or choosing an impact player while they give up little.(Payton admits to molding the team after the Patriots)
The draft is rapidly approaching and the War Rooms are full of charts.
Who else do you think is a good GM or has a talented front office?

Scott Pioli - ex-Pats now Chiefs
Kevin Colbert - Steelers
Ted Thompson - Packers
Mickey Loomis - Saints

I'd put Pioli first and the rest are in no particular order. Plenty of other good ones like Polian and AJ Smith, but the top four, in my opinion, are listed above.

Synonym for penny pincher is what I thought of Loomis when he came onboard. I honestly didn't think it would work out. It probably wouldn't have either if it were not for the rest of the staff. The coaches, the scouts, they have really found some real value in later rounds and free agency.

Loomis is vastly overrated; though, he's smart enough to keep his trap closed and let people wonder if he's an idiot rather than 'open his mouth and remove all doubt'...

I believe Loomis has developed into an excellent GM. He seems to be a person who knows how to get the right people around him, and then properly delegates duties as needed. No one is able to get the job done if he doesn't have a great supporting cast. The Saints right now are one of the best organizations in the NFL, so I would say Loomis is a big part of why they are doing so well. Don't really know where to rate Loomis in comparison to other GM's, but he is doing a great job right now.

I'm baffled by this comment. What makes him overrated? What would make anyone even think he could be a closet idiot?

Please, elaborate.

Mickey Loomis has quickly become one of the better recognized GM's in the league, NFL Network credit him for alot of our success over the past couple years.
One thing that i love about Loomis is that he has a knack to getting players that have been overlooked, outcast or told they cannot play any longer and they always make a great impact on our team.

E.G - Pierre thomas, Jeremy Shockey, Darren Sharper, lance Moore, Marques Colston, Jabari Greer, Newest one (Jimmy Graham)

Just some of the players that have come out of small schools and have been overlooked or told that they are too old to make an impact in shockey and sharpers case.

He has a knack for signing players on the cheap and is one of the best dealing with the media. As for finding talent on the cheap, that has more to to with the scouts and coaches. It's like the duck gliding across the pond. It looks effortless but it's those little dirty feet under the water working overtime.

Whom to which he employs. If you want to be a good GM, you need to surround yourself which a good team and have everyone on point... doing their job. Does anyone believe Scott Pioli does everything himself? He's the best in the business because he has some of the best scouts, coaches, and everyday personnel in the league.

I can't speak for jp, but I can understand why he would make that statement.

Let me back-up for a second, though and make this statement. I find it most annoying that during a time that our team has been the most successful ever and gone as far as to win it all...I cannot be as happy as most of you are. I have always been a fan of Archie, or a fan of Bum, or a fan of Kilmer, or a fan of Ditka... blah, blah, blah...the whole time. I have always liked the guys both players or management...and it made losing bearable. Now that they are clearly winners I am struggling a bit because I really don't care too much for Payton, or Drew...and yes...even Loomis...but it isn't there performance that I don't like it is the demeanor. Each one of the guys mentioned have some little quirk or two that rubs me the wrong way.

Getting back to Loomis...he hasn't always made the right decisions. I think he gambled in a major way when he hired both Payton and Brees...and then drafted Reggie knowing it was going to cost him. It paid off, though, and he looks like a genius and I feel a little foolish...but like I said, it is not his GM ability that rubs me the wrong way...just like Payton it is not coaching and Brees it is not playing QB. For Loomis...I can't stand the way he sounds when listening to an interview of him over the radio. :)

Hard to say.

We won a freaking Superbowl and are considered one of the most talented team in the entire league.

Then again, he did burn two picks in a four pick draft on a damn Punter.

Still, I say he's one of the best.
