Second pick of 3rd round: Saints take CB Johnny Patrick out of Louisville

A great first round of the 2011 NFL Draft included Cameron Jordan and Mark Ingram coming to the New Orleans Saints and making them truly one of the big winners on night one.

Friday night saw a second round where the Saints didn't have a selection, but they ended up with two picks in the third. Their first pick of the night was used on Illinois linebacker Martez Wilson. He is an excellent selection and one that could possibly step into a starting role by perhaps midway through the season.

The Saints addressed two of their biggest needs in the defensive end out of California and then the linebacker from Illinois. The black and gold also took one of the best players available when they traded up to get the Alabama running back late in the first round. With their fourth selection of the draft, the Saints took:

Cornerback Johnny Patrick out of Louisville

While this may seem like a bit of the first head-scratcher for the Saints, it does make sense still. The Saints do have one of the best cornerback tandems in the league with Jabari Greer and Tracy Porter, but there were times they got beat last year and allowed some big plays. They will stay in as starters, but could use some help.

Roman Harper and Malcolm Jenkins rule the safety area of the defensive backfield, and remember Jenkins came into the league as a cornerback but moved over. Perhaps the same could be done with Patrick, but let's also not forget last year's first-round pick in cornerback Patrick Robinson.

Louisville senior cornerback Johnny Patrick should benefit in the 2011 NFL Draft from being such a versatile prospect.

In 2010, Patrick picked off five passes, returning one for a score. He racked up 49 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. He has nine career interceptions and has made at least 49 total stops three straight seasons.

Strengths
•Durable
•Very alert and aware of his surroundings
•Standout in zone coverage
•Enough size (5-foot-10 5/8, 191 pounds)

All-around talent

Productive, well-rounded player
•Breaks down well
•Sound tackler - not afraid to come up in run support
•Sheds blockers - strong hands
•Upside

Weaknesses
•Arrested for aggravated assault after a tussle with his girlfriend; the charges were later dismissed
•Doesn't sink his hips well - would struggle in man coverage against quick receivers
•Still learning the ropes at cornerback - could take a few years to come into his own
•Susceptible to play-action pass fakes
•Average speed (official 4.59-second 40-yard dash; 4.48 at his Pro Day)

Expected draft placement

Patrick best fits in a zone defense, but he could eventually succeed in off-man setups. He is most likely to come off the board no earlier than the late second round, but the third is probably more realistic for him.

He has recently met with the Pittsburgh Steelers, St. Louis Rams, New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys.

I'm not going to pretend I know anything about him but...

•Doesn't sink his hips well - would struggle in man coverage against quick receivers
•Susceptible to play-action pass fakes

This sounds painfully familiar.

I think he could potentially be groomed as a strong safety if he adds a little bulk. He doesn't really have the speed to be a corner in the NFL, but I can almost guarantee that he can catch better than "Teflon Hands" Harper.

5 11 190 doesn't sound like a strong safety. More like they move Robinson.

Danno 04-29-2011 09:33 PM

He's a dime CB and special teams ace, nothing more.

He's a younger Leigh Torrence

They will most likely cut Randell Gay, I agree with Danno. Gonna be a dime CB and special teams guy. With Greg Williams the kid might shape up to be a starter some day.
