The Mayor of Toronto must be on crack

He thinks that they will be able to lure the Saints to move there.

Apart from the borderline ridiculous notion that the Saints would be in play to relocate (then again, things were tenuous at best for the franchise’s future in New Orleans before Katrina), the fact that the Bills aren’t on the short list is surprising.

“If we had our own team,” Ford said, “we’d treat it like it’s our own and build up a fan base.”

I'm sorry, it's the mayors brother the councilman. So they must be sharing crack.

Kinda gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, "smoked bacon" eh?

darstep 05-05-2011 07:54 AM

NFL franchises are in high demand. They have great benefits to the economies they serve. Can't blame Toronto for looking. I have to believe that San Antonio is still peeping across the state line and waiting for another levee to break.

SapperSaint 05-05-2011 08:08 AM

Like, I really don't understand what they are talking a'boote?

Like, If they think the Saints are a'boote to moove to Canada 'eh, I think they are a'boote to get a rude wake up call 'eh. Beauty! Cheers!

So from all the REAL Saints fans.... TAKE OFF YOU HOSER!

I think people mention the Saints only because it's a buzz word for moving. After 3 real moving scandals, they haven't moved. 3 things keep the team in NOLA for a long time:

1) stadium always sold out LONG before Katrina (now with long waiting list)
2) the Saints are in top 5 in selling merchandize in the NFL
3) Saints have a lease with the Superdome through 2025

New Orleans is hosting a Superbowl next year, but that can't be said for Jacksonville.

The councilman/mayor have NO CLUE what is going on down here basing their comments on the economy and status of the City of New Orleans in the late 90's and pre-Katrina. Luckily, people know the City better after Katrina.

This issue is seriously not on the radar for me.

Exactly!!!!

What you said about the council folks being clueless as to what's going on down here pretty much sums it all up.

GeauxForMore 05-05-2011 09:09 AM

Thats funny. The only team I see moving anywhere is the Jagz, but to be honest I dont want any team leaving.

As I live in Toronto, I can fully confirm that Rob Ford and his brother Doug are completely clueless (in general, not just to what is going on down there).

Both of the Fords are large football fans, and have often talked about getting an NFL franchise here. However, also based on the reports, no preliminary steps have been taken (ie. talk to the NFL, or look into funding for a new stadium).

So while it's unfortunate that he opened his mouth and got people up in arms, this is their general modus operandi.

Wow..I have heard it all now. Jacksonville I can understand. They are having problems selling tickets, etc. But New Orleans…really….New Orleans before the Vikings and Bills. Child Please! The people in Toronto need to stop eating the yellow snow. Its affecting hem mentally.

I just read that and have to agree with this guy. Plus it made me laugh

Of course not. It's all in good fun.

But honestly, don't see a (full-time) NFL team moving here. The Bills are trying out a couple of games up here, but honestly the prices are just stupid. Not to mention that the NFL has already stated that Toronto would need a new stadium if we wanted a full time team... Really, not all that realistic.

jeanpierre 05-05-2011 10:11 AM

Jaguars are moving to Los Angeles; they are not viable in Jacksonville with Tampa and Miami already there; plus, Florida economy is in shambles and not likely to recover with so many people there that don't contribute to the economy (retirees that hide their money in tax shelters and do not spend and welfare dependents that vote in Palm Beach).

There are certain franchises that are entwined with their city's teams to the point they are their identity; Baltimore and Cleveland were a good lesson in this and the political fallout from that move is still being felt (lot of old Colts and old Browns fans sit on circuit courts); those cities most interlocked would be Packers, Saints, Browns, Cowboys, Redskins, Eagles, Steelers, and Bears.

Plus, I wouldn't want to play for those teams with those tax rates...

Luda34 05-05-2011 10:11 AM

I haven't heard anything about expansion lately it's been over 10 years now since the Texans came in the league. Why haven't the league look at some more city's to get teams instead of other city's trying to steal other city teams.

jeanpierre 05-05-2011 10:16 AM

By the way, Canada, geaux F**** yourself if you think you're getting our Saints!

MatthewT 05-05-2011 11:22 AM

While I do believe this is a bunch of hogwash, I can see how the Saints could be a possible candidate to relocate. Let's face it, right now the Saints could be at their peak value, and Benson is an old man. Simply handing the team over to Rita may not be as easy as one would think. None of us have any idea what type of issues this may cause with other family members, especially considering the current value of the franchise. There could also be some serious tax issues for the family once Mr. Benson passes away. Maybe the easy thing, for the sake of the Benson family, would be for Benson to sell the team within the next couple years.

Just sayin...

Danny Cox 05-05-2011 01:22 PM

Toronto Saints? Not likely!

I....I just don't understand. I mean to mention the Saints and Jaguars but not the Bills...the team that plays a friggin game a year there?? Idiot.

papz 05-05-2011 02:44 PM

I'm more interested in talking about pixies, unicorns, and fairy dust.

Yup... as I sated before, he is a complete idiot. This is obviously something that he just said without doing any research. As for Benson being an old man, Ralph Wilson (owner of the Bills) is much older, and has already stated that when he dies, the Bills gets sold to the highest bidder. With that being said, there are already talk of some groups in Toronto putting in a bid.

Oh, jeanpierre... please don't lump all of us Canadians in with Doug Ford. I like the Saints where they are, as it gives me a reason to come visit your fine city (and most other Canadians either don't want an NFL team, want the Bills, or want "any" team).

merci, mon ami.

I was reading the comments posted on the story, this one was particularly funny to me:

The Toronto Vikings ???? anyone.

Crusader 05-06-2011 01:08 AM

I don't think there will be any teams outside the US until the NFL decides to expand again and expanding with less than 8 teams would make no sense at all.
