Dan Reeves out as Falcons coach

Dan Reeves is out as head coach of the 3-10 Atlanta Falcons, who say they want to set a "new course for our future."

The Falcons' Web site this morning announced the "release" from his contract is effective immediately. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will serve as interim coach for the remaining three games.

The news comes on the heels of Sunday's 20-14 victory of the Carolina Panthers. It was the club's first home win of the season.

"Yesterday, I advised Dan that we've decided to bring in a new head coach beginning in the 2004 season," said Falcons owner & CEO Arthur M. Blank in a statement. "Dan asked to be released from his position immediately and we agreed to do so, even though our desire was for him to stay on through the rest of the season."

A 10:30 press conference has been called this morning at the training facility in Flowery Branch.

Reeves has been Falcons coach since 1997. Before then, the Americus native held similar posts with the New York Giants and Denver Broncos. He was named NFL coach of the year in 1998 when he took Atlanta to its first-ever Super Bowl.

"Dan's record in the NFL speaks for itself," Blank said in the team statement. "He has had a long and successful NFL career as a head coach, assistant coach and player, and his Hall-of-Fame-caliber accomplishments will have a place in the NFL record and history books for years to come."

"We have made significant commitments to our fans and the community, and significant changes throughout other areas of the club," Blank said. "Now is the right time to set the course for our future in the coaching area, as well."

Reeves is the seventh NFL coach to notch 200 victories.

Phillips has 27 years of NFL coaching experience, including three seasons as head coach for the Buffalo Bills.

Blank said the new coach search will be done in a "thorough and honest manner."

This suprises me. I respect Reeves as a coach, he\'s the reason that Vick is there to begin with. I figured that with Vick out, this would be a wash season for Reeves, but I guess I was wrong. He\'ll coach again, he\'s too good. Possible return to New York with Fassel on the way out?

Bring him here. I\'d be happy with Reeves. He did a good job in Atlanta until Super Man got hurt.

LSU is putting together a new package for Saban now, The school is not giving out any details other than they are working on it yet but it is supposed to be a monster deal.
