How much luck can we make this year?

How much luck can we make this year?

In '09 under GW's system the defense was a turnover machine. We stripped the ball but mostly we got on top of loose balls.(in the air and on the ground) Personally, I believe Sharper made us extra lucky in '09 with his veteran savvy and sticky hands. We were very opportunistic and every ball bounced our way. Yes, I do believe that you make your own luck.
Last year offenses figured that if they kept the ball secure they could gain additional yards while we were busy stripping instead of tackling. Our turn over margin dropped substantially. Can GW get luck rolling our way again?

GW's system is mostly suited to feast on quick/ bad decisions by QB's because of the amount of pressure he's under, or as you pointed out the forced fumbles which are all down to hustle by the certain player that causes it. That being said, that game plan has flaws when you don't have a OLB that can cover a TE, can't stop the run or get quick pressure on the QB - all of the above where problems in the Seattle game, hasselbeck sat back and was comfortable all day back there.
We need to be more stout, stopping the run, that being said our offense needs to get off to a fast start like in 09 to help the D out, by forcing the other team to throw. All a big circle!

I think we still had a substantial bit of luck last season, Jenkins versus cowboys, Lance catch vs Ravens etc, but the killer part about all the turnovers from 09 is that the pass rush was way better. The installation of Alex Brown, Jimmy Wilkerson didn't really help us on the turnover side, as much as they made us statically better. Healthy Sharper and Jenkins will help, but LBs besides vilma that can get at QB's and make them get inconsistent would help more. FA is still gonna play a big part in seeing if we can get that kinda swag back. I personally don't think you will see us match that turnover level. I do however see just a healthy mix of turning teams over and getting them off the field. That should get us back to the playoffs and from there who knows.

Scoring fast and scoring high forces the other team into rush situations which causes screw-ups. On the other hand, rushing the other team's offense also causes fumbles and interceptions. Both offense and defense need to do their job and keep the Saints, a well oiled machine, onto their next Super Bowl Championship.

I'm hoping that we start tackling with the first man on the scene and let the rest strip the ball.

Yep. Tackling is paramount. GW and Payton addressed the strip technique thing that they coached up after an earlier mid-season game that allowed +150 on the ground. I can't stand poor fundamentals, especially at this level. I watched 3rd-and-longs converted on us all season because of poor tackling. I saw Osama grab a guy by the back of his pants with one hand, and give up another 12 yards while trying to tomahawk the ball loose with the other hand. It was sickening! He looked like a bronco buster with his hand still caught in the rope. Hit-wrap-and-roll should be a pre-requisite for making the squad. I think three-and-outs are the only turnovers we REALLY need!
