Outlook of our front 7

In the draft besides Mark Ingram and Johnny Patrick, all the other picks were there to address our front 7, My question to everyone else is, do you think we have successfully done this with the depth we have at each position now.

D-Line - Alex Brown, Jimmy Wilkerson, Shaun Rogers, Will Smith (4 Game suspension), Junior Gallette, Sedrick Ellis, Jeff Charleston, Anthony Hargrove, Cameron Jordan (Rookie) Greg Romeus (Rookie)

Now from that list, we can see we have great depth on the D line, which we need due to Will Smith most likely to be suspended for the first 4 games. Possibly taking his spot in that time could be Jeff Charleston who works best in a rotation as everyone knows.
Alex Brown needs to be replaced, i really don't think he can offer us much anymore, I'm hoping Cameron Jordan and Greg Romeus will both split time there to be groomed into starters.

Linebackers - Stanley Arnoux, Jonathan Vilma, Scott Shanle, Jo-Lonn Dunbar, Danny Clark, Martez Wilson (Rookie) Kawika Mitchell, Jonathan Casillas, Marvin Mitchell

Looking at that list (please tell me if i've forgot anyone) We have pretty good depth however;
Stanley Arnoux - Injury Prone
Scott Shanle -.......Need i say more
Jo-Lonn Dunbar - Seems to be extremely inconsistent, can be excellent at Run stopping and poor at other times
Danny Clark - Pretty solid guy but is aging and we need an injection of Youth at the position
J.Casillas - Pin pointed to be the starter last season after an excellent preseason, injury hit him and he was lost for the season.
Marvin Mitchell - Okay in a rotation, But still learning and JV is way too good to be replaced.

I'm hoping Martez Wilson will show us something, that means he can be the starter at OLB, he looks to be a great pass rusher and he is a physical beast for the position, I can't wait to see what he does in preseason.

Please let me know what you all think about our current status in our Front 7

The challenge is going to be which 15 or 16 players do we keep?

I love the potential of Romeus and Bussey, but will we have room for them?

You know the shoe-in's are Smith, Rogers, Ellis, Jordan, Vilma, and Wilson.

That leaves only about 9 or 10 spots left for our front 7.
The competition for those 9/10 spots is incredible.

1. Alex Brown,
2. Jimmy Wilkerson,
3. Junior Gallette,
4. Jeff Charleston,
5. Anthony Hargrove,
6. Greg Romeus,
7. Stanley Arnoux,
8. Scott Shanle,
9. Jo-Lonn Dunbar,
10. Danny Clark,
11. Martez Wilson,
12. Kawika Mitchell,
13. Jonathan Casillas,
14. Marvin Mitchell
15. Nate Bussey
16. Tom Johnson (the CFL stud dude)
17. Remi Ayodele
18. Anthony Waters
19. Ezra Butlewr
20. Ramon Humber

Wow, we're gonna have to cut 10 or 11 off that list. We're gonna cut some pretty decent players.

Of all the draftees, I am most excited about the potential of Greg Romeus and Martez Wilson.

Romeus needs to get healthy (he may begin the season on the PUP list, or, worst case scenario, he will be put on IR). He has too much potential to be waived. I believe, when healthy, he was better than Jabaal Sheard.

Martez Wilson was the fastest LB in the draft (he played mostly MLB at Illinois) and could be one of rthe most talented. Von Miller, who was dradfted by Denver, was very talented, but looks to be a one-dimensional player as a pass rusher only. Wilson, who is raw especially at dropping into coverage, will have to learn the position of SAM, but could be a situational blitzer, a run stopper, and a good cover guy against a TE.

It's like physics. Potential energy (these two players) if converted into kinetic energy (play on the field) their upside is very high.

Basically the two are identical physically. Von has instincts far superior to Wilson's right now.

Martez has a lot of mental development and reps to become a consistent impact player, but he has all the tools to do it.

Of course, if he was already more seasoned he wouldn't have lasted till the 3rd round. Duh!

I'm excited about all our picks, but especially our 1st two. I think Cam has the potential to equal Charles Grant's best year, but do it for an entire decade.

Funny thing, I was high, extremly high when I started watching that show at the Army hospital on a drip line of morphine.

I think we will survive the WS 4 game suspension. By the way, has that been determined to be final?

papz 05-15-2011 05:32 PM

I don't believe it's official, but it's more than likely it will happen. I'm guessing they need to settle the lockout stuff before the ruling comes down.

Here's a recent article on the matter.

Front seven will hinge our success. We've all heard it before: 1) better pass rush, and 2) improved run stop. Locks: Smith, Charleston, Ellis, Jordan, Ayodele, Vilma, Shanle, MMitchell, Wilson. Romeus=IR or PUP. Everyone else is a free for all cage match - last men standing after signing a FA or two just to make the cage match even more interesting.

Rugby Saint II 05-16-2011 01:34 PM

No matter how I look at it Will Smiths absence in the first part of the season could really affect our chances to win early in the season. We can get by, but we worked so hard this off season to address the defensive front and we have to start off with a key piece missing.
I'm hoping that a couple of our rookies can be hidden on the practice squad or possibly IR them so we know they will be good for next year. Some of these second year players could make up for missing a number one draft pick next year.
