One of the keys to the team's rushing success is the unusual scheme used by coordinator Mike McCarthy. It calls for the center to identify a primary target for the fullback at the line of scrimmage before the snap. That designation is the starting point for rest of the line and backs, who then adjust their assignments. Because of the late adjustments, the Saints can run most plays regardless of the defensive alignment, personnel or movement.
I've noticed that McCarthy has been insistant on running the ball no matter how many men the defense has in the box. Seems, he's devised some unique scheme for running the ball. While Deuce has been successful running the ball this year, I think he would have been successful anyway. I think all this scheme has done is take our big play passing game away this year. We rarely ever spread the field and use the pass first approach. Deuce is a great back, but this approach hasn't produced the points like last year. Last night we spread the field and I think we need to do more of that. This offense has the ability to change it's scheme, no matter who we play. I don't think McCarthy is being flexiable enough and he's too insistant on trying to "set something up" later on down the line, when we should come out firing.

Maybe I'm wrong here. Any thoughs?

It is the 1 2 3 system .

Blocking assignments for the mentally handicapped . Seriously

Fontenot can make the adjustment at the line by designating a number predetermined by McCarthy to individual defensive players . Brooks would be ideal to do this and I do not know why he is not , other then the old he cannot read defenses thing .

The line assignments are then adjusted to the defensive formation , in a nutshell it takes the guess work out of zone defenses . Fullback are usually told to open the lane and down block the first body they see . Instead now the fullback goes to a predetermined player and drive blocks him out of the zone .The assignments are adjusted down the line in projection to the designated gap of the running play and the odd man out becomes the sweeper . The sweeper goes out and contains in the lane ahead of the runningback .

It has diddly poo to do with pass plays. The passing game has a different blocking style .

If anything it has allowed the Saints to get better production from Duece and get those 3rd downs without relying on the passing game .

08 -- That\'s interesting, but what I was wondering is if they were calling run plays regardless of how many men were in the box? It has appeared that way to me and several members here have questioned Brooks for not audibling out of the play. I am curious if this is the reason why that has happened. Maybe McCarthy\'s scheme runs the ball regardless of what the defense does, which the quote I posted would suggest.

Again, maybe I\'m wrong about that.

Your last name wouldn\'t happen to be Mora, would it? ;)

In the system Billy it would be harder for Brooks to check into the run then out of the run .

Hypothetically

Brooks hits the line and sees the Corner playing off and the Linebacker playing up . The original call was for Deuce to split the strong side center guard gap . The linebacker has not eaten all day and he has a Deuce is a t - bone look on his face . Brooks turn to his right and screams TANGO , then to the left TANGO . (TANGO is the hypothetical call name for a hot read quick slant to Horn ) The play is changed ....

Now if the play is Horn and Pathon on a post pattern and Boo over the middle and the safeties are playing deep , the corners are off and the linebacker is deep and Brooks only needs 3 yards for the first . In 10 seconds , Brooks must make the read , call the Audible at the line and then call the blocking assignment with the Fullback as the primary . A little hard for Brooks considering the late huddle breaks . Most likely he would step back and call timeout . Which he usually does a couple times a game . Brooks could audiblize without the blocking system and run it on a first come first served basis .

With this system , Brooks can still easily audiblize out of the run to a pass play with the current players on the field .

That\'s interesting also and I actually agree with you. I\'m not making myself clear though. I wonder if McCarthy does\'t want him to call an audible and is confident his running scheme will be successful no matter what the defensive alignmet is? McCarthy or Haslett certainly don\'t seem upset that Brooks isn\'t audibling out of anything, which would lead me to believe that is what they want him to do?

Some teams the Audibles always stay the same , the call names are changed. Some teams draft up new plays and names .

That thought would leave the quarterback without options and at the mercy of the defense . Maybe the 3rd string quarterback would not be aware of the audible packages and the only case I can remember was that of Billy Joe Hobert in Buffalo , and that was because he was not paying attention in the offensive meetings .

I really do not think this is the case in New Orleans with Mc Carthy , simply because the only reason an offensive coordinator would not want his quarterback to option out of a full blitz package on a run is because he does not trust the judgement of the quarterback to do so .

We have all seen Haslett explode on the sideline when Duece gets slammed in the backfeild on a blitz . Now it might have been because one player failed to stop 2 blitzing defenders or it could be because Brooks should have optioned out .

08 -- Maybe you are right. I\'m probably overly critical of McCarthy. I have heard several \"experts\" say that McCarthy doesn\'t use all the weapons on offense correctly though. If I were him, I would do it differently. But, I\'m not him and I could be absolutely wrong and he could be doing a great job. All I know is that we have spread the field out twice this year and really thrown the ball, and both times we have been very successful.

I guess the arguement could be made that we did it against 2 sub-par teams, but I\'d like to see it against good teams. That\'s the way we beat the good teams last year. JMHO.

Try this thought it may work for you and maybe not .

Ray Rhodes .

What does Rhodes see , that alters the way Mc Carthy calls the offense ??? Rhodes a long time defensive man , blindsides Mc Carthy in Seattle and that game changes the game plan .
