Darren Sproles to the Saints has some leg?

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports free agent RB/KR Darren Sproles will choose between the Chargers, Eagles, and Saints.

A decision is expected to come "soon." The Saints are looking at Sproles as a more explosive replacement for Reggie Bush, and the Eagles have been connected to both players all along. The surprises are that the Rams aren't a finalist, and Sproles is willing to return to San Diego. We get the feeling the market for Sproles wasn't as strong as he had hoped after two straight seasons under the franchise tag.

i already gotten into many arguments stating sproles is better than bush and i will say it again. much rather sproles than bush.

Would love to see this guy in the Black and Gold

papz 07-28-2011 01:54 PM

We have had a pretty good KR since the Beerman.

|Mitch| 07-28-2011 01:55 PM

I don't feel we "need" another back, however; I wouldn't mind seeing Sproles in the B&G. As long as he's not too expensive...

Maverick2299 07-28-2011 02:00 PM

I think they want him mostly for KR/PR, put him in the WR slot.
But i think he will stick with the chargers at the end of the day.

Speedy Ron 07-28-2011 02:01 PM

where is BOLTFAN when you need him??????

papz 07-28-2011 02:02 PM

I think he stays there too. After all... they've given him a LOT of money as a backup RB and KR the past couple of years. He may be inclined to stay b/c of loyalty and familiarity.

But IIRC he wasn't happy at all about being franchised.

jcp026 07-28-2011 02:07 PM

Pass. He'll cost more than he's worth.

papz 07-28-2011 02:08 PM

I never understood why players disliked being franchised. Obviously everyone wants long term stability, but you could sign a big contract one year and get cut the next. What matters is what's guaranteed and what you get upfront. Give me 10 million dollars in guaranteed money over the facade signing a large contract you're not going to see all the way through. If you're that good, you'll probably get franchised again and give a 20% raise with it... all guaranteed.

Memnoch_TP 07-28-2011 02:16 PM

Sometimes it is about opportunity, as well Papz. Maybe that perfect opportunity to go to just the right team or just the right region gets missed. Maybe your chances for a long term deal with another team goes down because the market gets flooded with your position a year later.

There are all sorts of reasons to hate the franchise tag.

Luda34 07-28-2011 02:19 PM

I just said this on the Reggie Bye Bye thread before I knew anything about him even considering coming to New Orleans. I'm playing the lottery tonight.

papz 07-28-2011 02:23 PM

I just find it hard to balk at so much money upfront. I guess I would feel different if I were in their position but that's just something I'll never know.

=*(**

On that note, you see how eager Vincent Jackson and Logan Mankins are willing to sign their franchise tag this year. They lost so much money trying leverage themselves into a long term deal that it cost them over 8 million dollars a piece.

Hes better, and cheaper.

neugey 07-28-2011 04:19 PM

Sproles would be great for our return teams. He's more durable than Bush and I've always liked him. A small part of me still thinks he could elevate his game if it's needed and become a star, like Priest Holmes or Maurice Jones-Drew had.

Speedy Ron 07-28-2011 04:32 PM

says he will annouce soon...cmon maaann

No way. Sproles would simply be a scat back and a stud returner.

PT is our best RB, until Ingram supplants him.

I still have yet to read a post that doesn't qualify Ivory's talent without a comment about staying healthy.

If Cie Grant could have stayed healthy he'd have been a stud MLB.

All our backs have had trouble staying healthy the past couple of seasons...

PT>Ivory. Ivory = Paper Tiger PT had a fluke injury when somebody rolled up on his leg.
Ivory couldn't stay healthy in college or the pros because of his running style.
Still, it's a GREAT PROBLEM for the Saints to have.

Actually he doesn't. He's basically had one injured season.

Ivory never made it through a game without getting hurt, and now he won't even be ready for training camp because of liz franc surgery, which has ended NFL careers.

Speedy Ron 07-28-2011 09:32 PM

are these legs dead????

It has to do with you stating PT was deep into the injury category.

I'm not interested in Sproles at all. We need a fourth RB and a KR/PR. Give Hamilton and Gable a chance to earn that fourth spot. Give Gable and Galatas (and maybe bring back Larry Beavers) a chance to compete for the KR/PR spot. Save a lot of money and don't go after Sproles. We still have to take care of Brees and Nicks and Colston is a free agent next year.

Yes, we do. He had to have ankle surgery. Was that part of faking it too?

Payton ridiculed the reports that stated he thought PT was tanking it.

I can't help but think maybe either our strength and conditioning coaches or the schemes Payton runs has alot to do with our injuries. A couple years ago it was corners, last year running backs, its bizzarre.

I do not think signing Sproles will have any bearing on PT what so ever. If anyone is to get traded/released it will be Hamilton. Also I see Ivory on the PUP list anyhow, so if we trade PT that would leave Ingram, Sproles, and Hamilton. I would be worried about that scenario. It will likely be P.T. Ingram, Ivory, Sproles. They possibly even keep Hamilton if Ivory goes IR or PUP.

I think Sproles goes elsewhere for more touches and more money though.
