2011 New Orleans Saints Depth Chart

It's early in training camp, but this helps to build a picture of the team and what free agent needs may still be needed; plus young FA as well as Rookies may have to show something in camp...

WR Marques Colston, Lance Moore, Adrian Arrington
LT Jermon Bushrod, Charles Brown
LG Carl Nicks
C Matt Tennant
RG Jahri Evans
RT Jon Stinchcomb, Zach Strief
TE Jimmy Graham, David Thomas, Tory Humphrey
FL Devery Henderson, Robert Meachem
QB Drew Brees, Chase Daniel
FB Korey Hall, Lynell Hamilton
RB Pierre Thomas, Mark Ingram(r), Darren Sproles, Chris Ivory

LDE Cam Jordan(r), Alex Brown, Junior Galette, Turk McBride
DT Sedrick Ellis
NT Shaun Rogers, Aubrayo Franklin
RDE Will Smith, Jeff Charleston, Greg Romeus(r)
OLB Scott Shanle, Will Herring, Jonathan Casillas
MLB Jonathan Vilma, Marvin Mitchell, Anthony Waters
OLB Martez Wilson(r), Clint Ingram, Jo-Lonn Dunbar
LCB Jabari Greer, Patrick Robinson, Johnny Patrick
SS Roman Harper, Pierson Prioleau, Chris Reis
FS Malcolm Jenkins, Andre McDaniel(r)
RCB Tracy Porter, Leigh Torrence, Fabian Washington

PK Garrett Hartley
P Thomas Morstead

You can see some interesting position battles in camp...

Will Herring could have been signed as the nickle linebacker/specialist to spell Shanle, add depth...

DT-3 has Ellis and no other proven players; unless Saints braintrust has something else in mind, makes you see alot of LB, another NT signing, alot of DE, yet only one DT-3....hmmm

saintsfan1976 08-03-2011 08:03 AM

Good post JP.

Did the new bargain change anything or is the final roster still 54?

papz 08-03-2011 08:08 AM

I thought it was 53?

foreverfan 08-03-2011 08:51 AM

You're looking at the Superbowl Roster II.

As I understand, the two "significant" changes are:

1) Game Day actives expanded from 45 to 46.

2) Elimination of the "Emergency Quarterback"

Total Roster Size seems unchanged...

Note: Hopefully Saints opponents will need that third quarterback...

Luda34 08-03-2011 10:22 AM

Offense looks about right but on defence. I see Alex Brown and Anthony Waters gone. I hope we have a sleeper on this team that come and play his a&* off and make the team.

QBREES9 08-03-2011 11:20 AM

Question what happen to Heath Evans ???

biloxi-indian 08-03-2011 11:50 AM

JP; Charleston, Mitchell, Waters are not signed (A/O this writing). Romeus may go on either IR or PUP given he hasn't practiced to date due to rehabing a knee.

Plus, Safeties Amaya and Oliver will be in play.

Don't forget the LS Drescher. :)

Hey fellow Saints fans!

I'm a first time poster, but a long time lurker on these forums, and I've been a fan & close follower of the Saints since around 1998 ("Ditka era"). I had couple of things to add...

C Matt Tennant -> C Cecil Newton

Although he was probably mainly brought in as a camp body, I guess he could serve as the backup for Tennant if Goodwin doesn't return and no other FA is brought in by the FO. And additionally he could also take up Tennant's duties on the ST. Naturally this would make the position a possible liability, but if the gap doesn't allow anymore big moves than I guess this would be what the Saints have at the moment. And what about this Ryan Taylor guy... another camp body?

DT Sedrick Ellis -> DT Tom Johnson

I was under the impression that this guy was a pretty promising 3-tech from the CFL, who had shown alot of promise and could really be a massive "sleeper." Naturally he is still unproven, which might be why he was not posted in the above depth chart.

According to the above highlights he seems to have that explosiveness off the line that could make him a good rotational guy for Ellis with a slightly bigger frame at 6-foot-3. Although, I'll be the first to admit that the CFL O-Lines really aren't true comparisons for their NFL counterparts. He apparently spent some time with the Colts before going to the CFL where he was a "West Division All-Star" for what it's worth. But, I believe you guys would know more about him than I do?

Also, as an afterthought, I read somewhere that Cameron Jordan can supposedly slide to DT as well, but since I haven't seen any of his College games at California... I don't know for sure whether it's true or not.

Anyway... just my two cents.

Crusader 08-03-2011 11:59 AM

Hey neighbour welcome onboard!

Who is this Tom Johnson? Did we sign him and when?

FinSaint 08-03-2011 12:08 PM

Apparently in January...

Saints sign former CFL DT Tom Johnson - NFL- NBC Sports

And he is showing on the roster...

New Orleans Saints: Tom Johnson

But don't know of his status or ability anymore than that... maybe somebody who's been at the camp could shed some light on his status.

jeanpierre 08-03-2011 02:33 PM

Nothing like a guy who pays his dues to get to the show...

If he plays hard, laughs loud, and eats well - New Orleans and Saints fans will embrace 'em...

Maverick2299 08-03-2011 03:02 PM

I cant even think about the depth chart without getting headaches. It will be interesting who makes the final roster.

neugey 08-03-2011 03:10 PM

I wonder if Tennant would be able to handle the starting Center role at this point. Something to definitely track in camp.

FinSaint 08-03-2011 05:23 PM

So I've tried to uncover some more information on DL Tom Johnson, but information has been scarce and somewhat uninformative. But alas I found some articles of mediocre interest...

Quote:

The New Orleans Saints have signed former CFL DT Tom Johnson to a future contract, a source confirmed. Johnson, who signed his contract on Friday, worked out for the Saints on Jan. 13. Sportsnet.ca reported that Johnson signed a three-year deal. Johnson will go the reserve/future list until after the Super Bowl. Johnson, who played for the Calgary Stampeders the past two seasons, also worked out for the Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins.

Quote:

Calgary Stampeders defensive tackle Tom Johnson finally got his chance at being a full-time starter this season but it could be a short tenure with the team.
Johnson is set to sign an NFL agreement in the coming days, Johnson’s agent has told Mark Stephen of QR77.
The hulking defensive lineman, who spent two years with the Indianapolis Colts prior to coming to Calgary, has narrowed it down to four teams. Those are the New Orleans Saints (close to Johnson’s hometown of Moss Point, Miss.), the Philadelphia Eagles, the Minnesota Vikings and the Seattle Seahawks.
There is thought to be a five-figure signing bonus involved.
Johnson was a West Division all-star this season after notching four sacks and recording 39 defensive tackles. The 26-year-old, 6-foot-3, 288-pounder was key to the Stamps’ second-rated rush defence.

And the NOLA.com article about the signing...

Quote:

The New Orleans Saints have agreed to sign Canadian Football League defensive tackle Tom Johnson to a futures contract, according to Calgary Stampeders director of player personnel John Murphy.

Johnson was originally signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Miss in 2006 but didn't make the roster. He has since spent time in the Arena Football League and with the CFL's Stampeders.

Johnson (6-3, 288 pounds) bloomed in his second season with the Stampeders, recording four sacks and 39 tackles to earn West Division all-star honors.

So, not much info, but could be a potential "sleeper" as I referred to earlier? I have to admit that I had completely missed or just ignored this signing back in January, which of course can be explained by the fact that it was in January and with the future/reserve nature of the contract itself.

Don't be shy baby, update the depth chart!

Its a hornets nest right now. I would not be suprised to see somebody who was starting last year be a backup this year or even get cut.

There's definately some "healthy" competition across the board, especially on defensive side of the ball.I can't wait to see how it all pans out.You can hear the excitement in GW's voice when mentioning C.Jordan.That's making me comfortable in knowing we'll have a key contributor this year.
I've been listening to Bobby and his sidekicks speak on how M.Wilson's looking the part too! This season can't get rolling fast enough for me man:bng:
We're going to DESTROY most teams that fail to forfeit before the coin toss!!TWO-DAT :twisted:

I am looking for some sign of life from Tom Johnson, DT, 27, 6'3" 300lbs. Saints signed him in Jan 2011 to a 3-year $1.8mm contract. Last year he played for CFL Calgary Stampede...played very well from all accounts.

The guy is from Moss Point, played at MGCJC and Southern Miss.

Could be a backup for Sed Ellis.

Anyone been to practice or heard anything about his progress in camp thus far?

Exactly, this is what we were wondering earlier here, and I personally wasn't able to find out much about him other than some mildly informative articles about the Saints signing. The Stampeders' fans seemed to have thought the world of him, but that isn't exactly saying much and how success in the CFL translates to the NFL is another thing completely. But now that I think about it, wasn't Joe Horn a CFL player before signing with the Saints?

Anyway, I would also appreciate any information on him, since he could really provide the Saints proper 3-tech rotation coupled with Ellis.

Here's his CFL highlight reel from the 1st page:

Let's start playing preseason and see what we really got...

The Dude 08-05-2011 06:15 PM

I don't see Arrington making the cut. All reports out of camp are that he sucks compared to other guys. He won't play special teams, and I think our last receiver will have to contribute on ST. There is a new rookie who has been burning it up at receiver and Drew is singing his praises. I think we see a new guy at receiver this year.

Thats what I hear. I was kinda sweating him too. I had heard some bad stuff about him from national reports, but GW seems to be really high on him. He may be hamming it up a bit to push Porter, but even if he is close that is fine by me. Always good to see draft picks panning out.

Should be some really good battles at Defensive Back - looking at depth chart, you can see why Darren Sharper at his age/injury isn't being tenured.

Emphasis on special teams could affect several players (i.e. Ries, Arrington, Amaya, Oliver)

There is the looming suspension for Will Smith; how will that affect roster?

Got some really good, young rookie free agents.

Keep looking back at the depth accrued at DB; never in Saints hx has there been this many options...

Ivory injury could open door to him being on back end and Bell making a play for the team...

Nose Tackle depth is amazing...

Will be playing close watch to linebacker position battles...

Kreutz signing really stabilizes the offensive line...

Does the Barron and Foster signings light a fire under Brown, Strief?

Does Cam Jordan allow us to have Ellis as the only 3-tech Tackle?

With the depth on this team, you can see why more veterans are being told everybody plays special teams. This is why staff has emphasized special teams will decide who makes the roster.

FinSaint 08-06-2011 04:57 PM

Charleston resigned - Curtis Johnson cut.

Quote:

The New Orleans Saints re-signed backup defensive end Jeff Charleston, who has been with the team since 2008. The 6-foot-4, 265-pounder has been an effective pass rusher in spurts. He had three sacks and two forced fumbles last season.

To make room, the Saints released defensive end Curtis Johnson.

I would think as an end... at least for the first 4 games due to the "Smith-gate"
which will probably be his change to show something to the staff in rotation to secure
a roster spot for the rest of the season. If he can't do that... he may get cut after those first 4 games.

As many Saints beat writers have said, the audition for defensive end will geaux into the regular season because of the Will "Smith-gate" thing as you say...

That's fine with me because you get more film, in fact better live bullets film, to assess who's best for your team...

Again, really good battle setting up at Defensive Back when Porter gets back- Fabian Washington has been getting burned/out of position/struggling grasping scheme.

Everyone but quarterbacks and offensive lineman have been on special teams

The Will Smith suspension will have the Saints carry an extra Defensive Lineman for sure; but how 'bout Junyah, Junyah, Junyah???

The rookie wide receiver free agents show that Coach Payton can flat-out pick 'em; Arrington can play, but he's not going to make the team if he can't get right...

After Monday Day Off for Players, the real survival of the fittest will begin...

Ivory hernia sx looks like he's setting up for the PUP list and won't be back till after Week 8...

Two potential ProBowlers at Nose Tackle...wow...

Linebackers picture will be better mid-next week; Shanle shows he's the guy until he can be unseated; Will Herring will be the Nickel-Linebacker...

Any doubt Kreutz would start? Did anyone see that asinine grading of the offensive lines by the CBS Sportsline Fantasy Dork???

Funny how Brown is back on the field at Tackle all of a sudden? Needs to lose the USC 'tude

Cam Jordan looks to be what was expected from Charles Grant; how long does he have a professional attitude?

With the emphasis on special teams, shouldn't Drew Brees serve as Placekicker holder?!? ;)
