Gregg Williams

Forget big name signings, we have Gregg. I believe no matter who we get or draft that Gregg will be able to coach them up.

With the players we got for him, I think he will do wonders for our D.

It may actually be better then our Offense.

homerj07 08-08-2011 09:51 PM

We pick up the players he thinks he can work with!!

Getting GW might be the second best move of the Sean Payton era after signing Brees.

Choupique 08-09-2011 05:50 AM

Sean Payton coached Marshall Faulk in his college years.
Both of our coaches can coach, for decades now.

We were due. Think about some of the coaches we've had to endure.

How is this for an example: The Ditka era (error)?
whew. I'd prefer not to recall that, frankly.

Coach Williams is the man. I really like people like him.
He is the opposite of politically correct.

Geaux Saints.

WTF? He's about as conservative as Timothy Leary! GW starts callin' that crazy voodoo defense of his and the other teams start cryin' that the walls are breathin' and their ice cream's too loud. Hell Chuck Cecil (formerly Tennessee Titans) is conservative! GW's just plain insane! (And we love him just the way he is.)

At least I understood it as Strato exchanging politically correct with conservative to get He is the opposite of conservative.

Oops, I see it now. I'm blaming it on the whole adrenaline, I'm so past ready for football I can't even think straight thing. The rest of what I said still stands though.

Are they playin' yet?
How 'bout now?

RockyMountainSaint 08-09-2011 12:06 PM

This is how I picture GW preparing our D

alexonfyre 08-09-2011 04:36 PM

Does anyone else think that Gregg is being groomed to take the crown if Coach Payton's plans to retire in a couple of years are true?

I hate to say this, but we are on GW last year, and I think he wants to be a head coach.

I don't think he is going to stick around for Sean Payton to retire.

Don't know about you, but I'm gonna enjoy every minute of it.

Where did he HC before?

Maverick2299 08-09-2011 05:19 PM

He had a stint with the Bills as a Head Coach. But then went back to being a defensive coordinator for the redskins. Greg thought he would take over as head coach when Gibbs left, but Snyder fired him instead. Then we got the gift of a great defensive coordinator!!!

Hes been a horrible head coach everywhere he has been. Sometimes great coordinators do not translate into great head coaches and I believe Williams is one of these. I for one would rather find someone else to replace Payton when he retires. Someone better will be out there, and with the way this program has improved we will pretty much be able to get anyone we want.

FinSaint 08-09-2011 06:48 PM

He also did a year as the DC/AHC in Jacksonville following the Washington stint, but he hasn't been a successful HC yet... but that
day might yet come. Here's to hoping that SP won't retire in the near future! You don't think that SP will pass the torch to his AHC Joe Vitt?

Isn't Vit like 150 years old?

Hopefully he's grooming some one on the staff.

(Sooner or later Payton will coach the Cowboys)

No matter what name goes on the hand puppet, Jerry Jones will always coach the Cowboys.

Screw those guys. I want Cowher. Or Gruden. Hell even Marty Shotenheimer is better (and probably younger) than Vitt. Hell I say go out and rape Bellicheck away from the Pats.

He will leave before Payton; but your statement regarding excellent coordinators making horrible head coaches is true:

Exhibit A - Dave Wannstadt

Exhibit B - Norv Turner

Exhibit C - Wade Phillips

Exhibit D - Buddy Ryan

Exhibit E - Marvin Lewis

Exhibit F - Dick LeBeau

Exhibit G - Eric Mangini

Exhibit H - Mike Martz

and the list can go on...

That is the exact reason I got into this thread.

I think that GW hanging around combined with SP saying he doesn't want to coach forever adds up to that being a strong possibility.

But I think that in order for that to happen, SP would have to "retire" (see-> go coach the Cowboys) after this or next
season 'cos GW isn't going to wait forever to get another chance at HC. If they'll be as dominant on the D as most of us believe
they are going to be... then GW's stock is going to be very high and the offers are going to be pouring in. And it's probably not just
a case of getting the chance to call all of the shots, because as I understand it, there's also quite a bump in pay grade
moving from DC to HC. And we are always talking about how some player had to take the offer of another team 'cos he won't get
many more chances for a big contract (see-> Goodwin). So, why couldn't the same be said for coaches and coordinators?

Oh, and the Vitt suggestion was a joke - or a nightmare - depending on the point of view, which will hopefully/likely never happen.

Crusader 08-10-2011 06:02 AM

I hope to see GW in black and gold for atleast one more year after this. I don't know who could replace him as a DC and get the same production out of these guys.
Now if SP would retire Gruden or Cowher would be acceptable options with Gruden as my favourite there.

Saintswrath 08-10-2011 06:36 AM

You guys are praising the wrong guy..
It's LOOMIS who should be getting all the praise, without him THIS SAINTS TEAM Would not exist. There would be no Sean Payton to suggest or bring in a Gregg Williams, there probably wouldn't be a Drew Brees, we wouldn't have even thought about having Reggie Bush celebrity dwell our practice field, There would be no 35,000+ Waiting list Season Tickets, There would be no Superbowl, Saints would probably be a top flight to California as a failing franchise in a small market that can't sell out seats in a National monument-like stadium..

Loomis has crafted this entire Gumbo pot of goodness that we can now proudly call our own and pound our chest about, When Arnie Stepped down i had some doubts but Loomis quickly changed my mind..

While people are looking to shake Sean Payton and/or Gregg Williams hand i want to give Loomis a BIG Ol'e HUG and tell him how much i appreciate him as a GM... He puts the "G" in General.

Yep, Benson decided to let Loomis hire this unproved OC named Sean Payton. Benson wanted to hire a proven coach, Loomis insisted on Payton.

Benson told him..."You better be right about this Mickey, because your ass is on the line".

The rest is history.

neugey 08-10-2011 09:40 AM

Mickey Loomis is our Jerry West.

darstep 08-10-2011 09:51 AM

I'm still trying to figure out why Mueller slipped out of town wihtout even a peep. I've got my huntches though. Somehow Mickey convinced Benson to do what Mueller never could, loosen the purse strings, and behold, a winner ever since. We had no cap issues until Loomis showed up. We were stuck in plus3 minus3 mode every season and trying to get it done with 2nd/3rd tier plug-ins. Thanks Mickey and thank you Tom for listening.

FinSaint 08-10-2011 10:06 AM

I'll join in the praise chorus for Loomis...

My fear is that Payton leaves after this season to be the HC of the Cowboys and takes Drew Brees with him in a classic
"Any Given Sunday" move. And since the Saints won the SB in this coming season, GW has so many suitors for a HC job,
and is snatched away before Loomis can react. That leaves the Saints without a HC, a DC, and a starting QB, who just
happens to be the face of the franchise. And then, Loomis' abilities as a GM are truly tested... and the Cowboys go on to
win 3 straight SBs. :-(

Worst case scenario... here's to hoping it only happens in Oliver Stone movies.

Budsdrinker 08-10-2011 10:33 AM

Mickey did have a rough start and I will not mention his first pick but he has learned from his mistakes and I'm glad we have him.

Choupique 08-10-2011 11:02 AM

SP will never coach the Cowpokes. Get real.

Rugby Saint II 08-10-2011 03:21 PM

Sean Payton has it good here. There is no way he would turn over the reins to someone else and go to work for Jerry Jones....AKA SKELETOR
Jerry Jones is a control freak who doesn't understand football as well as Al Davis. Sean Payton deliberately drank Jerry Jones bottle of wine after the Superbowl.....you don't do that to someone you want to work for. He spent enough time around the organization to know that he can't turn them around. Anyone who thinks differently might want to take a look at how much of a tool Jones is.

strato 08-10-2011 03:23 PM

Money talks

Maverick2299 08-10-2011 03:27 PM

Yes money talks but....its not always the decideing factor.

Shaun Rodgers, Aubrayo Franklin, Olin Kreutz.....

The thought of a championship also talks.

Also I don't see him leaving while Drew Brees is here.
