DT Tom Johnson Up and down Story perfect for Saints?

DT Tom Johnson on his journey to the Saints: “It’s like being at the top, falling all the way to the bottom and climb your way up to the sludge and the slime. ... I’m trying to take advantage of everything they want me to be.”

DT Tom Johnson’s born August 30, 1984 in Moss Point, Mississippi journeyman career started with the Colts five years ago.
An injury ended his stay in Indianapolis and he thought his career was over. He played in the Arena League but said it wasn’t for him. He signed with the Saints after a successful stint in the CFL.

Now thats funny.

Ol' Tom did pretty good against the 49ers. I hope he can keep it up.

I agree, but I would've liked to see more of him. Yet he did fine against the 1st string guys, but also made some mental errors. I was concerned about his health when he left the field at the beginning of the 2nd quarter with apparently a leg injury. But since it hasn't been addressed by the Saints staff, I guess he's alright. I can't wait for the Texans game to see him in action again.

What mental errors did he make? I'd like to re-watch it and see what he did wrong.

good video. Seems like a humble guy with his head in the right place.

Nothing over the top... he made some misreads and over committed to rushing the wrong side on some weak side rushes. He also missed a guaranteed sack 'cos he was going too fast, couldn't adjust to the QB's step up and blew by past him, and he was kicking himself after that... punching his own helmet. :-) I think it's just a matter of adjusting to the NFL gamespeed after CFL.

Bottom line: he has really great speed which on the other hand can get him into trouble, but at the same time can get him out of it. Definitely a great rotation guy for Ellis' 3-tech spot.

Your mancrush is worse than mine with Gallette..Fin..lol

What a motor for a guy his size. I'm impressed with Tom Johnson, and that's not easy. I also would like to see some more of the same. Greg Williams needs a bigger tool box.

There comes a time in every man's life that you just have to make a stand!

I think that it might've just been a muscle cramp, maybe on hamstring or calf muscle based on the way he limped off the field and because there hasn't been any official report of him suffering an injury.
Anyway, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

This is they type of story we had with Anthony Hargorve - I like this aacpect of our front office & they seem careful what reclamation projects they sign.

I can NEVER see us signing a TO or Randy Moss. (TO Isn't playing somehwere ... is he??)

I think Johnson is going to make the final 53. I believe he has a better chance of being on the final roster than Mitch King (no offense to Mitch King, who played against backups but looked good).

We will know more after this week's game at Reliant. But because we also play the Texans in week 3 of the regular season, I would not expect 3G to show his total hand in this game.

Probably... but very likely some other team is going to snatch him up, assuming he at least keep up the level of play he showed against SF.

Based on the SP's recap of Tuesday's practice... Johnson did in fact suffer an injury to his calf muscle:

Payton Recaps Tuesday's Practice

Quote:

The following players did not practice: Ezra Butler – hamstring; Ramon Humber – quad; Clint Ingram – hamstring; Joique Bell – knee; Tom Johnson – calf; Johnny Patrick – right knee; Jeff Charleston – left ankle; Alex Barron – left knee; Leigh Torrence – left hip; and then Malcolm Jenkins we sat this afternoon with the right knee.

But SP liked what he saw out of him:

Quote:

How did Tom Johnson show up in the game before he got hurt?

“He did well, he did very well. You know, if we were identifying a few players that stood out, he would have been one of those players, he was one of those players.”

Has he kind of flown over the radar because of Shaun Rogers and Aubrayo Franklin?

“I think a little bit, Tom Johnson is one of those names to begin with as under the radar. But he’s had a good camp, and he’s smart. He was real good the other night in his snaps and hopefully we can get him back as soon as possible.”

So it would seem that he's a lock for the 4th DT spot, which leaves King looking in from the outside.
