Stinchcomb Released

1 Attachment(s)
Didn't see that coming.

Right tackle Jon Stinchcomb has been released by the New Orleans Saints.
Stinchcomb had returned to practice with the Saints last week after sitting out the previous two workouts to rest his surgically repaired left knee. During practice on sunday sixth-year pro Zach Strief was lined up with the starting unit ahead of longtime starter Stinchcomb.
tinchcomb's performance dropped off in 2010 after he made his Pro Bowl debut in 2009, though that was largely because of a significant knee injury that Stinchcomb played through.

Payton on Stinchcomb's release "A very tough decision. He has been a leader for us. It's what makes this time of year difficult."

Wow, I have to say.... even though I figured that something would happen, I didn't expect it to happen this early. Stinch was a liability.

The Dude 08-15-2011 06:22 PM

Totally did not see that coming. To those of you who say thats great, Stinch IS a pro bowl Tackle, and they do not come easy especially this time of year. Yea he was bad, and has been injured, but is Streif a better option? I hope to hell there is some veteran out there we can pick up, because if not we are in deep ****. This is not the year to go ****ing around with your offensive line, and we already replaced Goodwin.

Who else is out there that we could go after????

saintfan 08-15-2011 06:23 PM

So who's gonna step up and take that spot?

Danno 08-15-2011 06:26 PM

Soooooo, how about Tennant at LG and Nicks at RT?

Nicks would be a flat out dominant RT in this league, and they are apparently real high on Tennant at either OC or OG.

|Mitch| 08-15-2011 06:27 PM

I'm going to have to place my trust in the coaches with this. They are just a little bit more knowledgeable than me and know what the hell their doing.

True, and I'm sure they didn't just release him without a plan.

I know he was good at onetime.. but he would have gotten Brees killed this year...im with you on we need to pick up someone solid for the season..sooooooooooooooon!!!..Strief is serviceable.. but we need help there..

I think we still need to bring someone in for depth, and as I said, I dont think this is the year to experiment with moving around your offensive line. Especially when that move involves one of the best guards in the league and a back up center going in out of position as a starter. You need at least an entire offseason to pull off a move like that.

gandhi1007 08-15-2011 06:29 PM

I like it! Strief will be the new RT. He's not the greatest pass blocker, but he is a stud in the run!

Jack Vegas 08-15-2011 06:32 PM

Sorry for Stinchcomb because this is likely due to his injury....however we are still in fine shape.

I actually think the best alignment at this point might be to put Strief at left tackle and move Bushrod over to the right side.

Most likely correct, but Nicks did play OT his entire college career, at a school that lead the nation in pass attempts. It wouldn't be unfamiliar territory for him.

This could be the plan we have 3 more preseason games to see..

Im like you though, Im sure they have a plan. If they are bringing someone in, they already have a deal done. The FO has proven they know what they are doing with **** like this.

It's not that big a change really. Most right tackles are glorified guards anyway. Unless you play on a team with a left-handed quarterback your right tackle is usually just a big masher who's not a good enough pass blocker to play the left side.

Donuts32 08-15-2011 06:39 PM

Sorry to see him go. Strief and Brown will probably compete to be starter now.

GeauxForMore 08-15-2011 06:39 PM

So does this mean C. Brown is ready. I mean Barron is not the answer at RT after what I saw him in Dallas. I like Strief, but im not in love with him. Im going to trust the coaches on this one, but from where im sitting at it looks like we are in trouble. Now is not the time to mess with your O-line.

Unfortunataely we have no choice. I don't have a lot of faith in Strief.

papz 08-15-2011 06:41 PM

Wow... wowwwwwww. This came from left field. Hopefully Strief is ready to step up to the task and perform better than he did against the 49ers. He was terrible.

Good luck Stinchy... solid RT when healthy. He never got any credit around these neck of the woods.

VillainAgain 08-15-2011 06:43 PM

So apparently Coach and I agree that the Team has had enough of him getting his ass kicked out there. So all we need is to loose the shanle and loomis gets his exec of the year in Villain land

strato 08-15-2011 06:43 PM

This was a move to save Brees..lol..he can only make them look good for so long ..Stinch just was a liability..and i know everyone would rather have Drew upright than staring at the stars..

Jack Vegas 08-15-2011 06:44 PM

I wouldn't worry too much. Stinchcomb has been a good player but it's not like he's irreplaceable. Strief has been a solid contributor and can play either side. Worst case scenario we're looking at some journeyman like Jordan Black or George Foster at right tackle and with Brees' pocket presence that will be enough.

papz 08-15-2011 06:46 PM

Both of them have plenty of starting experience... definitely a plus.

xan 08-15-2011 06:47 PM

Fantastic. Sorry that a good guy, teammate and leader had to go. But he HAD to go. He is 1/10th the player he was in 2009. He likely contributed to brees injury last year and the regression of the offense. His preseason outing against SF merited no further consideration. I hope Atlanta picks him up.

jnormand 08-15-2011 07:09 PM

Whoa! I bet he was more surprised then we are. Good guy too. I don't disagree with the move, assuming ofcourse the FO has a plan. But I wish him luck.

SmashMouth 08-15-2011 07:10 PM

Interesting ... this is actually a good time to do it ... it leaves breathing room to implement whatever plan they already formulated. And Nicks at RT may not be so far fetched...

alexonfyre 08-15-2011 07:37 PM

I was a stinchcomb defender for all of last season when he was injured and throughout camp, but I lost the last thread of faith in him during that SF game, he got manhandled by a mediocre DE at best. I dunno why people are hating on Strief so much though, I mean he hasn't gotten many first team reps, and when he came into the game on Friday the SF line was totally off-balance to his side, even then he still held his own for a couple seconds against 2 defenders at a time at one point. (Chase ended up having to roll out away from his side and threw incomplete, Drew probably would have taken a shot before that point.)

I don't think he is a pro-bowler, but I think he can start.

I would rather have our best tackle on the blind side please.

Might make running the ball to the right side unstoppable! Kruetz, Evans, Nicks Interesting.

Oh, whatever, you guys are petty and ridiculous. Clearly Stinch was one of the better RT's in the NFL before he got hurt. That isn't even in question.

Someday that's going to be Drew Brees. I'd hope that when that day comes fans give him a little more respect than this.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go throw up a little.

breesfan27 08-15-2011 08:34 PM

Whaat? I totally didn't see this coming. Sucks.

Thanks for everything, Stinch.

homerj07 08-15-2011 08:34 PM

I agree did not see this one coming - at all.

Does this free up a good amount in cap money?

Maverick2299 08-15-2011 08:41 PM

I am pretty surprised he got cut, but he played very poorly in the pre-season game. Dont know how good or bad he was in camp.

But the must have seen that someone else was playing better.

Plus it frees up cap room.

It frees up cap room, but somehow an offensive line with a HOF center and maybe the two best guards in the league is the weak link on the team. It frees up cap room, but who do we bring in with the money we've saved? How do we get better?
