Brees not looking so hot this camp

Reports coming out of camp so far are that Drew is only completing like 50% of his passes and seems to be taking a step back. According to Bobby Hebert he seems to be in a slump. God I hope this is just rust.

gandhi1007 08-16-2011 07:06 PM

I hope it's a sign that we are going to have one hell of a defense this year.

|Mitch| 08-16-2011 07:07 PM

Yes; I hope this "slump" is attributed more to our stout defense and less to Breesus himself...

strato 08-16-2011 07:08 PM

I think Drew will be ok when the bullets fly..might have to play a little more in the preseason than we all want..

alexonfyre 08-16-2011 07:12 PM

At least three of his good friends have left the team and he had a pretty terrible preseason opener. Not to mention his son is 1.5, and all of the stress of this plus that probably has his mind slipping. Also, he doesn't quite have the same chip on his shoulder that he did before the super bowl.
I don't think he has lost his ability to win or to be an elite QB, I just think that he is going to get worse before he gets better. I think most of us that have competed in sports on any level know what that is like.
We may string together a couple of losses, then Payton will slap him in the face and tell him to get his **** together, then we will see Drew back in championship form.

Srgt. Hulka 08-16-2011 07:18 PM

I think he need a new bad-ass chant to start each game of this new season! It worked in 2009!

SaintPauly 08-16-2011 07:22 PM

This is certainly not "good news". Hope he figures it out. Good thing our running game should be alot better this season. Could it be all the changes in the o-line? A new center, is a pretty major change for a QB.

Always enjoy your posts. I have an idea this is what is going on. Bobby said something along these same lines but used the word spoiled. A caller called in asked if it was a testament to how well our defense is playing and Bobby saind no about 10x and then kinda got off topic without elaborating. I just really hope that as much as he has been forced to throw these past couple of years on a surgically repaired shoulder is not catching up to him. Even so, even when Drew starts to decline a Drew at 70% of what he has been is better than half the qbs in the league and with good coaching, a solid running game, and top defense we can still be contenders for 3-4 more years before having to rebuild.

I think all good points made here. I also think, from watching him
at camp, good god, just BEING DREW BREES takes a lot of energy.
Girls and women scream as soon as he walks on the field and scream
for his attention and autograph to the very last moment when he
disappears in the door.

I know, I know, boo hoo for him. BUT... some people there today
were being so demanding and so pushy with him. Like they just
wanted him to sign something so they can turn around and go
sell it. And it must get absolutely exhausting to be him sometimes.

Once the season gets going and they can get into a routine where
he's getting the rest he's used to and in a groove, I think he'll be
fine. I mean it's not like he's out there throwing bricks the whole
time. The dude works his butt off out there. He is clearly
the spiritual leader of the team. Still works the hardest, and stays
out doing extra work.

My guess is it has more to do with training camp itself, than
anything with his skills. I think he's gwan be juuuust fine.

QBREES9 08-16-2011 08:47 PM

No worries its Drew Brees !

pherein 08-16-2011 08:49 PM

Brees Had dropped passes and blown OL assignments in the preseason game, he knows that, he's a smart person.

In practice Brees is facing one of the best DC in football, A DL that might turn out to be in the top #5 in the NFL, excellent LB's, and a secondary that most rate at #1-3 in the NFL.
I think the defense is just becoming where GW envisioned it to be, and that is a hard thing to play against.

So they are going to struggle on offense sometimes in practice. But its going to make them better, and more able to win games against other great defense we play this year like packers/bears/failclowns/bucs/and yes Rams.

I like that Brees and the offense is struggling. We have had the #1 rated offense sense 2006, most will admit, and I think we are better on offense than we have ever been. So that means our defense is finally catching up and GW has a lot of the players he wanted ( you never will get all of them).

Failure is the mother of success, my dad always said. Let them struggle in practice and learn how to play a great defense. So when we play the packers , Brees and the offense will be ready for #2 ranked defense last year, and show the packer fans how lucky they where Not to face a healthy Saints team in the playoffs.

xan 08-16-2011 08:53 PM

He also doesn't have a true #1 and colston + Meachem are limited. What defense is going to respect brees if theres no one to throw to. Now, if the line mans up and stops imitating a sieve, brees might look a bit better.

QBREES9 08-16-2011 08:54 PM

This will only make him better.

You sure couldn't tell it today! Colston and Meachem were both
stellar today. As were Lance Moore and Pierre Thomas. Ironically,
it was Jimmy Graham dropped his Woulda Been A Touchdown
Pass today. Oh... and Sproles. WHOA. That dude can hit warp
speed SO FAST. He is SO exciting to watch. Drew still have
PLENTY OF PEOPLE he can throw to. People that are gonna
make other teams HURT!

Good report there ALLSAINTS66.

SaintPauly 08-16-2011 09:10 PM

I still think that the change at center, is going to have an effect on Brees. This guy controls the line, and they have to get on the same page really quickly, to make sure this boat floats..... The loss of Stinchcomb also has an effect. This is his protection guys. He has to trust them with his life out there.

xan 08-16-2011 09:14 PM

Thanks. I defer to witnesses. I'm tired of watching game tape.

hitta 08-16-2011 11:09 PM

Offense supposedly looked really good today... I'm sure it's just the offense shaking off the rust and stuff. They'll be fine.

Crusader 08-17-2011 05:20 AM

Early in camp its always rough for the offence. Timing is such a huge issue and if its off just the slightest results will be poor. Its like when I play with the Swedish national team, defence is a bunch of great athletes just going after the ball and they get effective in just a couple of practises while the offence usually needs most of a camp to get rolling.

It's funny, because I was just talking about this to my brother yesterday.

I can't stand the chants. The reason? Because I know that in order for him to do that he first has to spend some time thinking about it, making it up, memorizing it, whatever...then he has to take the time to teach the rest of the team. Tell me that doesn't sound like a cheerleader practice.

Sure, it's a little bit like cheerleader practice. But the important part of it is the "leader" in cheerleader. He leads the team. If he spends a little bit of time working out the chants for the team, it's probably time well spent... it can help motivate the team (because maybe the big paychecks don't?). Whatever it takes to win, I say.

Now, the chant last year sucked... maybe they should have reused the one from the '09 season?

The more I read this argument, the more I am swayed by it. If you think about it, if Drew wasn't having a "bad camp" then we would have to talk about how the defense is having a "bad camp" because Brees and Co. was shredding them. Doesn't mean they are actually bad in the grand scheme of the NFL, it just means they aren't the best unit on the team right now, which I think is exciting because our Offense is REALLY good.

lumm0x 08-17-2011 10:23 AM

Not worried. Nothing more to say.

Maverick2299 08-17-2011 11:03 AM

The way Drew plays, he needs to get in sync with to OL. They have a new Center and now a new starter at RT. So he needs to get a good feeling with them, if your not comfortable you going to throw some bad passes. So hopefully by the start of the season the OL will get it together and get in sync with Drew.

"We're talkin bout Practice. Not a game. Practice." lol. But, we tend to play like we practice. So I hope he tightens up.

Danno 08-17-2011 02:01 PM

I remember a couple posters saying something didn't look right with Brees last year, and thought he might be hurt. They were beaten about the head and neck area relentlessly. Turns out there was something wrong with Drew last year.

Its obviously too early to draw any conclusions, but I'm not gonna just dismiss the posiibility that he's not at 100% right now either.

Budsdrinker 08-17-2011 02:24 PM

Regardless of the BTA's during the lockout. Without having actual coaching staff present those workouts were basically worthless. We only been working out for a couple of weeks so I wouldn't stress about it just yet. Now come opening game and Brees is still off, then I will start to worry.

mighty12 08-17-2011 02:37 PM

Drew was 1-4 in the first game, however Meachum should have caught that deep post on the last drive. I think Drew will be fine. Last year was an "off" year for Drew and he had 4000+ yards and 30+ TDs so even if he is having a down year, I am smelling SB!

papz 08-17-2011 03:22 PM

With the running game I think we're going to have, our dependence of Drew's arm should lessen... and in turn, improve our overall efficiency. I know we won the Superbowl with Drew throwing over 650 passes, but I'd like to see us use the meat up front more and decrease Drew's passing attempts by 50+.

On top of that all he did quite a lot of "suit & tie" work on the players' side during the lockout - that could've also taken somewhat of a toll on his own workout routine - and more importantly - on his mental preparation for the coming season.

homerj07 08-17-2011 06:54 PM

I dont know if Hebert is really a person to talk about someone else. His shw seems to be losing something this season

saintsfan1976 08-17-2011 07:18 PM

So, Drew Brees is mortal after all... lol

Rugby Saint II 08-17-2011 08:10 PM

It seems to me the offense struggled at camp in '09 when GW brought his defense to play his first year. The competition will only make the Oline better and learn how to play together in a hurry.

Belair57 08-17-2011 08:26 PM

I think he should be fine, I mean its Drew f'n Brees we are talking about here....
