Why is it assumed that the AFC is stronger than the NFC?

For the last few years, when watching, reading and listening to NFL prognosticators, the recurring theme is, how much tougher and stronger the AFC is.

The last four Super Bowl winners break down as: 75% NFC- 25% AFC.

Yeah, they are like the CDO of football. If you spread the bad parts out enough, then you make the whole thing look better!

Its more like the last decade or so...

Reason is they have statistically won more games during the regular season lets face it.

Its because of the Pittsburg Steelers, New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Ravens beeing really good over a long period of time.

As said, the in the cross conference games the AFC teams consistently have more wins than the NFC teams.

The NFC has won more SBs in the last few years (Though I still say the last one was more the Steelers losing than the Packers winning) but then you have to go back to the Pirate Bowl in 03 for the last NFC SB winner.

And we do have more up and down teams in the NFC. No one in the NFC dominates their divisions the way the AFC teams do. The NFC South still hasn't had back to back division winners yet, and every team has won it at least twice. In contrast the AFC South has only had two teams win the division, the Titans twice and the Colts who just own it.

And the Colts being in the AFC South is one of the most
ridiculous situations ever. Just as stupid as the Hornets being
in the South West Division. Why even have those distinctions
if you're going to put teams all over the place, not even in
the areas the divisions are named for?

The biggest is because through the 2000's the AFC won 7 Superbowls.
But I think its all going to change now...the Steelers, colts and Patriots are no longer as good as the used to be, still very good..but the NFC is starting its own power houses.
