I couldn't have said it better

Saints Win Some, Lose Some

I couldn't disagree more with the take on the defense. We played off coverage without blitzing most of the game. When you play that scheme, what do you think is going to happen? Yep, Swiss cheese! Once we unleash the real schemes we will be fine.

Don't you think these pre-season games are a good time to PRACTICE the stuff they will be doing during the regular season?

Guys trying to make arm-tackles aint going to get it done against better teams!

That crap may work against the 49ers & Raiders, but it sure as hell won't against Packers or Texans!

I think practicing your season D schemes are probably best suited for practice. You may show some stuff to opposing teams, but it is generally basic stuff. This is the chess match of the sport. The game against the Niners showed the capabilities in our blitzing schemes.

The Texans looked real intimidated!

It's like saying, "a few dropped passes are OK since its pre-season, we'll just do it right once the regular season starts". That's just crap! Wiffing, flash banging, bad angles of attack, head down with closed eyes ... all that stuff will carry over into the regular season and will bite us in the ash. Basic fundamentals can't just be turned on like a switch. You either do things right or you'll get entrenched in your bad habits. Williams nor Payton were able to turn the ship on a dime after coaching up the "go for the strip" thing. In the heat of battle, you will revert to what comes natural, or what you do most (repetition, practice). If we don't get fundamentally sound, look for Seattle playoff type performances from our defense on any given Sunday. The only thing intricate schemes will give us is a free lunch or two from the weak or unprepared, but in the long run, it will just expose some other flaw in our armour. If we can't play straight up and get it done, we are in trouble. Please don't throw any injuries in the mix. Outscoring our opponent every week is way too much pressure to put on our offense.

Observation ...

After following the Saints for over 45 years, I have noticed that preseason has never looked anything like the opening game. The biggest difference is that preseason doesn't game plan for teams. They do not study film on opposing opponents.

It's a time for new players to show their stuff. The coaching staff wants to evaluate people in the same scheme so they may play a certain scheme the whole game win or lose.

Mistakes or bad fundamentals are different than exposing game plans. You are correct schemes are coached....but the players will revert back to what they know in crunch time.

I still think you know how to tackle someone preseason or NOT

Hopefully, they saw how good the D will be in the San Fran game and they pulled back for the regular season.
