Based on his play on the field, his involvement with the community, his importance to the revival (dare I say he was the savior) of our franchise, his leadership among his peers, etc, etc, IMO he should be the highest paid player in the NFL.

I'm sure he'd take less. I doubt that the "Highest Paid" status is terribly important to him. All the more reason to make it so.

Drew swam the Mississippi with New Orleans on his back......he won't get what he's worth because he understands how each player needs money too. But he will get what he wants.

So how many years you think he gets? I'm gonna go with five.

PAY DA MAN!!!!

I'm surprised this isn't getting more pub on this site. I'm a big St. Louis Cardinals fan, so I know how excruciating it can be to not know what's going to happen to your favorite player and franchise icon when free agency comes a knocking. If Mickey and the boys cane lock him down, that's a HUGE story.

I'd think they'll sign him for atleast 6 years.

I think we all knew it would happen so hearing that its in progress is no big deal.

I'll get excited when its done.

No surprise to anyone. It has been mentioned several times it would happen like this

Yeah, I don't think anyone doubted that they wouldn't work out a new deal after most of the smoke cleared.

This is kind of a double-edged sword when you think about it - I would love for Brees to get rewarded for what he has done for this franchise by making him the highest payed player, but on the other hand, I would love them to sign him as cheap as possible in order to make cap room for other players. Anyway, I think the deal will be for 5-6 years, which is what SP referred to as the time frame in the recent interview.

Exactly. I think we can read between the lines of that SP quote, when he says something like that -- it's quite probable that he knows about stuff that is going on within the organization, that we don't know the inner details about. Payton sometimes does that...The reporter asked him how long he thought HE would be here, and instead of answering that question, he kinda started talking about how long he thought Brees AND him would be here and able to win championships...and he clearly said "us," not ME, not how long will "I" be coach.. So it sounds to me like they are definitely working behind the scenes on making it happen, and Payton is in the loop of the discussions, it's in his mind, but obviously he can't say anything at the podium.
