IR Hartley, keep another OL, and not start Herring at SLB. But what the hell do I know... I'm pretty sure they know what they're doing.

Seer1 09-04-2011 11:04 AM

So Ivory is definitely on the PUP? It's amazing the different things I'm reading on SI, ESPN, this site, etc... I think the lineup looks pretty good. Arrington kinda surprised me and I think Morgan going down made room for him. Payton and Loomis have a knack for finding new folk if we (heaven forbid) lose anyone in a thin spot so I'm not gonna spend much time worrying about that. I really think keeping all of the RB's, FB's is a good idea. It's too bad we have to waste an extra spot for a kicker, but I'll bet Payton even has a plan for that.

CheramieIII 09-04-2011 11:16 AM

I guess we'll keep at least one TE on the PS and I thought for sure we would've picked up Meriweather

He's the anti-Payton player.

Why do you think the Pats canned him?

papz 09-04-2011 12:52 PM

I love Meriweather(he has Shaun Taylor ability, just not production). But if Belichick cuts a Pro Bowl safety and it's not because of money, then there's something wrong there.

homerj07 09-04-2011 01:28 PM

"HURT"ley - all you do is kick!!!!

crawgator 09-04-2011 03:07 PM

All in all I think we did a good job.. Changes to make well get rid of Arrington..Maybe pick up an LB... Trade for Briggs no way don't like that guys attitude... maybe also pick Sharper or even Merriweather up... But all in all we are in good shape...

SapperSaint 09-04-2011 03:34 PM

I don't know what to think. Alot of these guys proved their worth. I guess I'm ok with it. After all, I don't think they will change because Sapper doesn't like something.

Choupique 09-04-2011 04:46 PM

I trust the coaches opinions.

None of you are NFL coaches so what does it matter what you think?

Danno 09-04-2011 07:40 PM

Not sure I'd change anything, but Humber and Quddus kinda surprised me, as well as keeping 2 FB's.

QBREES9 09-04-2011 08:17 PM

They know a whole lot better then I do. I agree.

If that's how you feel then why do you come here? I'm certain that you are not a head coach so what does it matter what you think?

jcp026 09-04-2011 11:35 PM

I'd be all for bringing in another linebacker as long as it was an upgrade. Briggs, Tatupu, or even Kawika Mitchell.

Why isn't Arnoux heading to the Practice Squad? If I could do anything, it would be that. More time to learn the defense and heal.

Crusader 09-05-2011 03:49 AM

I was surprised that we kept 2 fullbacks and would have liked one more O-line guy on the roster for depth. But overall we have a real solid team.

Cruize 09-05-2011 06:06 AM

Two FB's on the active roster doesn't make sense in this offense. The one released would have easily made the practice squad. I would have kept Morgan on the 53 and let him heal. The Saints have no punt returner with his skills. With the league rule on inactives, the 6th WR is not going to be active anyway.

Sproles should ok as PR..and i think Hall can play tight end ..he showed that against the Titans..we did keep Morgan he is on IR..so he safe for later..

I really think we plan to run the ball a lot more this year..Drew should not have to do it all himself like in 09...

Rugby Saint II 09-05-2011 03:27 PM

After watching our backups Thursday I'm not impressed with de la Puenta, Queddas and Amaya. They just didn't seem to look right on the field.jmho.
Also since we have Sproles and I don't think Roby does that well at WR it looks like he's a player that won't see much time.

hagan714 09-05-2011 03:48 PM

they did a great job but they had to overcome the nfl retirement home that was the saints defense. they have more to do. way to much in one year. safety, olb and the dt still need to be addressed next year.

ok LOT once again i can not leave that out. it is a tradition with me

To me de la Puenta looked much better in the Raiders game, and he did make some good plays in the Titans game... well of course except for the "free run" he gave in the safety.

Amaya also made some plays in that game, one textbook tackle near the sideline comes to mind in particular. I think he'll be a fine backup, who'll only become better with more time to learn GW's schemes.

Also, I remember watching Roby in the SF game more closely in plays where he lined up as a receiver, and he did run good crisp routes, which leads me to be optimistic about his potential to step up if needed.

But, needless to say, I agree with you that there are more concerns about each of them than I personally would like there to be.

BTW, did anyone watch the CST broadcast of the Titans game? They had Romeus starting as the RG... I almost choked on my beer when I saw it. http://yoursmiles.org/msmile/fun/m0169.gif

SaintsRule11 09-05-2011 10:49 PM

I would have put Hartley on IR since he will miss at least half the season and I would have only put one fullback on the roster. This would have opened the door for another linebacker (Ramon Humber, who just got cut) and of course, the third tight end.

They now have 3 TEs with the addition of Gilmore. I think that having 2 FBs shows a commitment to the run game, but also an emphasis on the importance of versatility by the staff, because D. Thomas can play as a FB and K. Hall can play as a TE.

Granted, having 2 FBs is pretty much never heard of in these times, but if that gives the Saints the edge in having the ability to run over most O-Lines - then I'm all for it.

Saint_LB 09-06-2011 06:10 AM

What would I have done differently? I would have taught him not to crow at the crack of dawn...oh, wait...you said new "roster"...not "rooster".

Budsdrinker 09-06-2011 07:32 AM

I look for more changes especially after week 1. Possibly the return of Alex Brown and maybe even Sharper. Hartley placed on IR. The roster will definitley change by the home opener.

joker-saint 09-06-2011 05:46 PM

Keep Alex Brown and cut Andy Tanner from practice squad. Let Alex be on PS until his injury's subside then find a way to rotate him in with the current line up of DE's.

Alex Brown is inelligible for the practice squad.

I would love to see Sharper come back. Is he healthy enouph to play though? Who would we cut to bring Sarper back? Do you think we got a good deal for Bush? Is Jonathon Amaya really that good? 10 games with 15 tackles, 13 solo and 2 assists? What did Sean and Gregg see in this guy. Aside from the 1 FS he hasn't really done anything. Why couldn't we get a better trade? Maybe they just wanted a lower paid player to top off the extra draft picks we got from them? I feel like Amaya might be a project player for Williams. Hopefully he can develop into a great player. Maybe we can cut Dennis Landholt and rotate Sharper in to the defense while placing one of the younger guyson practice squad? Maybe Joique Bell to prctice squad to increase the number of strong safties, or shorten the depth at NT and put King on practice squad? Either way it is a very difficult decision to make keeping salary cap and depth in mind. We have a pretty solid line up on defense as it is, and each of those players have already proven they can play. Sharper hasn't played since the Seattle game last season and his health remains questionable.

Its about 2, but depends on how many times they're brought up on the active roster too.

FYI...
Quote:

Section 1.
Practice Squads:

(a) The League may elect in any League Year in accordance with this Article to establish practice squads
not to exceed eight (8) players per Club. The League’s election in any one season shall not determine or affect
its election in any subsequent season.

(b) The League may elect to allow some or all Clubs to add to their practice squads one additional player,
who shall not count against the limit above, whose citizenship and principal place of residence are outside the
United States and its Territories (“International Player”). The League’s election in any one season shall not
determine or affect its election in any subsequent season. Such International Players shall be subject to the same
terms and conditions of employment that apply to other practice players except that they (1) may not, during the
term of their practice player contract, negotiate or sign an NFL Player Contract with any Club; and (2) may not
practice with any Club following the last Conference Championship Game unless both Conference
Championship teams have such a player. In addition, notwithstanding the provisions of Section 4 below, such
International Player shall be eligible to serve on a Practice Squad for three additional seasons after the
completion of the player's year(s) as an International Player. As set forth in Article XXXIV, Section 3, the
weekly salary for such international players shall not be included in the employing Club's Team Salary and shall
be deducted from the calculation of the Salary Cap in the same manner as any Player Benefit.

Section 2.
Signing With Other Clubs:

(a) Any player under contract to a Club as a practice squad player shall be completely free to negotiate
and sign a Player Contract with any Club at any time during the League Year, to serve as a player on any
Club’s Active or Inactive List, and any Club is completely free to negotiate and sign such a Player Contract
with such player, without penalty or restriction, including, but not limited to, Draft Choice Compensation
between Clubs or First Refusal Rights of any kind, or any signing period, except that such player shall not be
permitted to sign a Player Contract with another Club to serve as a practice squad player while under contract
as a practice squad player.

(b) Notwithstanding Subsection (a) above, a practice squad player may not sign an NFL Player Contract
with his Club’s next opponent later than 4:00 p.m., New York time, on the sixth day preceding the game
(except in bye weeks, when the prohibition commences on the tenth day preceding the game).

Section 3.
Salary:
Minimum salary for a practice squad player shall be $4,700 per week for the 2006-07
League Years, $5,200 per week for the 2008-10 League Years and the 2011 League Year if it is an Uncapped
Year, and $5,700 per week for the 2011 League Year if it is a Capped Year and the 2012 League Year,
including postseason weeks in which his Club is in the playoffs.

Section 4.
Eligibility:

(a) The practice squad shall consist of the following players, provided that they have not served more
than two previous seasons on a Practice Squad: (i) players who do not have an Accrued Season of NFL
experience; and (ii) free agent players who were on the Active List for fewer than nine regular season games
during their only Accrued Season(s). An otherwise eligible player may be a practice squad player for a third
season only if the Club by which he is employed that season has at least 53 players on its Active/Inactive List
during the entire period of his employment.
(b) A player shall be deemed to have served on a Practice Squad in a season if he has passed the club’s
physical and been a member of the club’s Practice Squad for at least three regular season or postseason games
during his first two Practice Squad seasons, and for at least one regular season or postseason game during his
third Practice Squad season. (A bye week counts as a game provided that the player is not terminated until after
the regular season or postseason weekend in question.)

Section 5.
Active List:
If a player on the Practice Squad of one club (Club A) signs an NFL Player Contract
with another club (Club B),

(1) the player shall receive three weeks salary of his NFL Player Contract at the 53-
player Active/Inactive List minimum even if he is terminated by Club B prior to earning that amount, and

(2)
Club B is required to count the player on its 53-player Active/Inactive List for three games (a bye week counts
as a game) even if he is terminated or assigned via waivers to another club or is signed as a free agent to another
club’s 53-player roster or another club’s Practice Squad prior to that time. If the player is terminated from Club
B’s 53-player roster and signed to Club B’s Practice Squad, he shall continue to count on the club’s 53-player
Active/Inactive List but shall not count against the eight-player Practice Squad limit until the three-game
requirement has been fulfilled. If a player is terminated prior to the completion of the three-game period and is
signed to Club B’s Practice Squad or is signed or assigned to another club’s 53-player roster or Practice Squad,
any salary (as that term is defined in Article XXIV, Section 1(c)) that he receives from any NFL club applicable
to the three-game period shall be an offset against the three weeks salary that he is entitled to receive from Club

SmashMouth 09-06-2011 06:14 PM

what .... another Ghey poll?

joker-saint 09-06-2011 06:18 PM

Its a shame to see a player like Brown get released. He could have given us the depth we needed. What happened to Morgan? How many can go on IR? Perhaps he could have been listed as IR instead of releasing him?
