The Saints are through messing around with veteran cornerbacks who are nearing the end. They plan to draft a corner who can start for them next season. The Saints likely will choose one in the first round, then might select another on the first day because they have an extra second-round pick. Someone such as Dunta Robinson of South Carolina might look good in black and gold.

Kiper's big board take:
17. Dunta Robinson, CB, South Carolina (5-11, 188) | previous ranking: 12
An underrated SEC standout, Robinson has excellent feet and great ball skills. There aren't many wide receivers who can accelerate past Robinson on deep routes. He consistently runs the 40-yard dash in the 4.40-4.45 range. Robinson is the kind of shutdown corner who can match up against the opponent's best receiver and maintain excellent coverage the entire game. Definitely a player on the rise.

OK I'm sold. I won't complain if he's our 1st.
I will complain if 2A or 2B isn't a LB.

I\'d be very happy to see \'em go with a CB at 17. I also won\'t argue with a LB either.

I\'ll be happy with a cornerback or linebacker, through free-agency or the draft. I feel like we really need both.

To me, Venturi played a non-aggressive defense this year and I believe that was becuase he felt he didn\'t have the proper personal to play more aggressively. I can also see some logic in that. The question is, will Venturi play an attack style defense if he gets a linebacker and shut-down corner. What do yall think? I think maybe Venturi might be a better than I give him credit for. Maybe!!!

Venturi uses a read and react style of D. I don\'t think you\'ll see the constant blitzing and pressure scheme that Zook used until we get somebody else at DC.

That\'s what\'s got me worried. I think we will have the talent on defense next year, and I feel we already had enough talent (not that we couldn\'t improve) to be a legit contender, but I\'m so afraid the coaches will F it up. I sure hope I\'m wrong about that.

I don\'t like to be negitive, but I\'m really afraid you are right.

Denial is step 1. Overcoming your fear is step 2. You\'re on the right track Billy. I another couple of years you\'ll be cured. ;)

Don\'t you guys think it would be better to take a proven vetran corner in FA than draft one. While I\'m not sure where I stand on the draft vs. FA as the best place to aquire talent, I am of the opinion that the learning curve at corner is a bit longer than linebacker. Thus, I\'d prefer to see a linebacker taken in the draft.

In fact, now that I\'m babbling, I\'m inclined to think that the draft is a good place to get DLs, RBs, and LBs - but it is more of a crap-shoot on other positions.

Need I remind everyone that this is the same load of BS that they fed us last year? They talked about drafting a corner, when they made the trade to the 6th pick I just knew my dreams had come true and we would draft Trufant (despite all you sorry naysayers). And lookie what happened- I\'M NOT FALLING FOR IT AGAIN, YOU A-HOLES!

I\'ve been perusing all of the mock drafts, carefully studying the articles from pros like Pompei and Kiper and meticulously scouring the bottom of my cups of tea, and I just can\'t shake the feeling that we should go for a linebacker with our first round pick. I think that we will get (with the LB position) a player that can start and impact immediately.

Being a man of humble ego and moderate to low intelligence, however, I decided to seek a second opinion. I made an appointment to see a physician that I trusted implicitly. He gave me a thorough examination and came to the following conclusion: I am suffering from a rare disease called alexmoldenitis. He said I probably contracted the condition in 1996 in the first round, somewhere between the 10th and 12th pick.

There is no cure.

Ya feel me, bros?

Longtime no see guys....
I have no problem with a \"read and react\" defense (although I prefer agressive and tempo setting), but the key to the r&r is instinctive and diagnostic individuals. This we do not have. Aside from Darren Smith, I really don\'t think any player we have is a poster child for an instinctive football player. Many of our guys are very talented, but seem excellent at single task players. In my perspective, about the most instinctive player on our defense this past year was Jay Bellamy, and I had written him off before the season even began. Unless we plan on picking up a game changing MLB (Al Wilson), a disruptive OLB (D.J. Williams), a shutdown CB (Chris McAllister) and a veteran runstopper at DT (??), we should definitely look at a defensive coordinator that will use creative aggression to force an opponent to either play risky or play conservative, and not allow offensive rythym to develop. Nothing allows an offensive comfort zone like a passive D that can\'t anticipate the playcalls.
