What is wrong with our run blocking??

Why is it that our pass protection is impeccable, but we can't run block at all? And I don't mean at the end of the game, I mean all game long.

jnormand 09-12-2011 11:14 PM

I don't know but I wouldn't say our pass blocking is that great either.

CantonLegend 09-12-2011 11:42 PM

nothing. we averaged 4 ypc...what are you complaining about

Crusader 09-13-2011 12:26 AM

I'm a little perplexed about this too. We got a bunch of really big, strong, athletic guys buts till can't seem to move people. Compare that to the Broncos O-lines under Shanahan that had no big name guys at all and still could just put any back behind it and count on 1000+ yds beeing gained.

I think part of the problem with our run game as a whole is the constant shuffeling of RBs in and out. Just pick a guy and give him 20-25 carries a game so he can get in some kind of rhytm.

CantonLegend 09-13-2011 06:53 AM

20 rushes for 79 yards by 3 different running backs is fine. you guys are just looking for stuff to complain about. what is wrong with that? please tell me

on top of that, the only reason our ypc wasnt over 4 ypc is because we ran mostly on short yardage when the defense was stacking the box.

we had success running except for 2 plays that stick out to fans who are quick to forget the rest of the game...you guys do it all the time. ur letting a few plays define a player or team.

just stop it

Brees makes our OL look better than they are with the way he gets rid of the ball. Shanahan's OL got away with a lot of cut blocks which are illegal now. We just don't run the ball enough with anybody to get any kind of rhythm.

Euphoria 09-13-2011 07:20 AM

Run blocking and pass blocking are two different things.

Two different skill sets and tactics. You can be great at pass blocking and suck at run blocking.

Also you don't just show up and decide you are a running team either it takes time to develop and work out the kinks.

Oh and one more thing it didn't help we played against the SB champs.

Danno 09-13-2011 07:24 AM

Other than it obviously being Roman Harpers fault, its probably because we don't work on it nearly as much as we work on our passing game.

And as Euphoria stated, 1st and foremost we need O-linement that can protect our number 1 assett, Drew Brees. If that means sacrificing a bit on run block skills, so be it.

sometimes drew makes our line look better. sometimes our line makes drew look better

cut blocks are not illegal and we ran the ball 20 times last game which shouldve been more except a few of our most important drives came at the end of the half and the 4th qtr

we have no problem running the ball, we just need to do it more

Broncos under Shannahan, and the Texans now, use a zone blocking scheme and I'd be all in favor of making a switch. Arian Foster, a UDFA, ran for over 1,600 yards and 16 TDs last seasons. Terrell Davis, my favorite RB of all time and a sixth round pick, ran for 1,538 and 13, 1,750 and 15, and 2,008 and 21 in consecutive seasons. Our guys aren't Terrell Davis, but could be 1,000 yard backs in this system. Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson would run for 2,000 yards routinely.

I agree we have the most rhythm-less backfield but I think it more due to the type of plays the coach is calling than any one back getting into rhythm

This team was built on pass blocking. Then in '09 when GW came in and slapped the Oline around then they got some attitude which they brought to the run game. Since then we've lost our center and RT who are both stiff as a board. We don't get any rushing yards because we don't get a push. We usually step back in pass protection. I think that's the difference. jmho

I think it's just a matter of them getting into a groove. We were behind and playing catch up. It was just one game... we'll get on track.

My team has been a pass first the the last couple of years operating a whole lot from 4-wide sets. This year we went to a Pro-I and started running the ball a whole lot more. It has taken almost the whole season to really get the ground game going even thou we have a skilled group. Its a big difference in the techniques and the mentality needed.

darstep 09-14-2011 01:04 PM

It's all just too cute. It's hard to run cute!
The four wide set works for me...nobody in the box.
That creates lanes even before the snap.
20 rushes last week and 50 tosses...50!.
Yeah, yeah, playing from behind - catch up mode, we've heard that one.
We had over 50 minutes to make up the 14 point hole we dug, and we've seen it before.
We've also seen Brees approach 60. We may have to pull him because of his pitch count.
Unitl it's a priority with Payton, we will struggle with it.
We will have some good days on the ground and we will win easily.
If things get difficult, Payton is going to open the gate and let Brees loose.
