Saints have tough roster decision
 

Will Smith defensive end for the New Orleans Saints was suspended for the first 2 game of the 2011 season. During the NFL lockout the StarCaps appeal was overturned and the court ruled in favor of the NFL after finding no “legal” way to block the suspensions. Will Smith started the season on the reserve/suspended list which means he did not count towards the Saints 53-man roster maximum.

Once Smith returns to the roster, the New Orleans Saints must cut another player to clear roster room, leaving them with a very tough decision that they must make in the next few days.

Currently the Saints are carrying two kickers, two fullbacks, and six wide receivers — and it would seem at first glance that these positions are the most obvious choice to reduce and clear the room needed for defensive end Will Smith.

With the way Kasay is performing is it time for Hartley to go to IR? We will find someone.

Hopefully we can get someone onto the practice squad.

I agree about Hartley. We need the D line rotation.

Junyah..you got to be kidding me.. 2.5 sacks in 2 games..and can play OLB. IR Hartley..Kasey took his job for the season anyway..

I say IR Hartley. If something was to happen to Kasay there are plenty of kickers on the street. If you lose a position player it takes too long to get them to understand the playbook and system to make a difference.

Easy decision actually.

Anyway... I'd be fine with either putting Hartley on the IR or cutting him all together.

I with you guys on the Hartley thing. I say IR and let him battle next year. Kasey may be old, but he still looks great!

I always like keeping some good honest fullbacks on the team. Which one do we cut?

Please please please put Garrett Hartley on injured reserve. John Kasay has been flawless and don't forget Garrett Hartley choked a lot last season. We do not need two kickers on the roster. Hartley can be brought back next season.

Reserve PUP players do not count against the 53 man roster.


Reserve PUP players have a three week window after Week 6 to practice with the team but a roster decision must be made, either to activate to the 53 or to IR the player, within that timeframe.



If a player is activated off the Reserve PUP following Week 6, a roster move is required to make room . That's what happened on October 17, 2008 when Dunta Robinson was activated from Reserve PUP and Chris Taylor was placed on injured reserve.
