Nothing Wrong With Harper's Hit...Officially

NFL tells New Orleans Saints that safety Roman Harper's hit should not have been penalty - New Orleans Saints Football NFL News - NOLA.com

Quote:

The NFL's head of officials called the New Orleans Saints this week to confirm what roughly 70,000 irate Saints fans in the Superdome were already certain of. The league said there was nothing wrong with safety Roman Harper's hit on Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler during the first quarter of Sunday's 30-13 Saints victory.

skymike 09-22-2011 12:19 PM

obviously a body in motion, especially a human body with limited balance, tends to retain that motion.

which confirms my feeling that we really won that game 30-6.

RaginCajun83 09-22-2011 12:28 PM

Was in Lambert or Youngblood that said put them in a dress if you don't want us hitting them ..... the "Tom Brady" rule is getting out of hand, i thought it was a BS call on Harper when it happened, sadly the NFL had to apologize to him

skymike 09-22-2011 12:31 PM

I think they should issue you a credit for your next illegal hit.

Like a "get out of fine free" card.

That was an awful call... them telling us afterwards doesn't do us any good. I'd like them to get it right the first time around.

What we need is the ability to challenge penalties....

why not they add things every single year. a penalty like that could change the outcome of a game easily and it should'nt come to that, so thats a great gesture mitch and i guarantie that one day u will be able to challenge a terrible unsportsmanlike bs call.

Mardigras9 09-22-2011 01:44 PM

They review everthing else now, why not penalties.

RaginCajun83 09-22-2011 01:51 PM

I like the idea but games would take 5 hours to finish, why does the NFL feel like they have to micro manage every part of the game now

darstep 09-22-2011 02:49 PM

Yep. 3rd and 6 is really not a good time to give away a 1st down based on a bad call.

JoanieNTX 09-22-2011 03:54 PM

What we "need" is to penalize the stoopid refs for making the wrong calls, which sometimes totally change the outcome of the game! I have no idea what they get paid, but how about 1/4 of their paycheck for each bad (wrong) call!?!

SmashMouth 09-22-2011 04:05 PM

All good ideas .... but this is a game played by humanoids .... who make mistakes .... in the end and typically, the calls even out. Can you honestly say we did not benefit on the Sproles TD? Besides .... if they actually do make a change, we would have less to banter about.

We did, and if the humanoids could figure out how to use walkie talkies it would have been reviewed.

I know the refs have a league-sponsored rating system, but I'm not sure how they are rewarded or punished for good or bad officiating. In their defense it is a fast game and the league is pushing them to call EVERY thing.

Gotta be some way to correct obvious mistakes, but if they can't use a walkie talkie then I'm not really sure what can be done.

would you believe I dont like replay?

i know its crazy, but we lived 100 years without replay, and football was good.

I know everyone else is perfect out there, especially, for example, you musicians when there is that note that just ... errrr.. that reminds me.... can you throw a flag when a musician plays a bad note? ...in all seriousness, it's a game where sheet happens!:bng:

more corroboration ...

What we really really need is for the refs to bring their friggin glasses to the game. Oh, and if it's not too much trouble - try putting them on! What gets me is there are 3 or 4 on the field; I don't know how many in the booth and they still get it wrong. Shouldn't somebody somewhere have questioned it? It seems to me that the people in the booth should be able to over ride the decision on the field whenever its friggin obvious. What good does it do us now? I'm just glad that we won and that decision didn't interfere with the win. **!!!**??!!

BS is BS no matter how much shine you put on it & how much you apologize.

"My bad" does not work!!

Interesting idea however, the only problem I see with this is that the same moron who threw the flag is the same moron reviewing it. Or at least it's the same moron's co-worker.

Just take 7 off the board for Chi-town and call it a day..

I would like to hold that card until we play Atlanta Sir!!!

RockyMountainSaint 09-22-2011 09:56 PM

Duh!

jeanpierre 09-23-2011 02:29 AM

The mere presence of replay at least curtails possible corruption of refs...

Which has been a problem in all of professional sports...

But the length of replay is not necessary if you got a guy in the hat watching the game during play who can push the WTF button during the game...

Older refs with good experience and poor treads on their Nikes would be ideal for this...

B_Dub_Saint 09-23-2011 10:05 AM

Not only was that BS, then Meachem gets tackled way out of bounds and we get no call. I lost it after that.

Yes, that was strange. After the Harper hit you felt like they owed us one and if ever there was an opportunity to even things up, that was it.

I can't remember what happened later, but I do remember saying, "Well, that evens things up a little."

papz 09-23-2011 12:14 PM

They gave us a first down when we were over a yard short.

Yeah, I was teetering after the Harper call but went full on sideways when Meach didn't get the call - and from the looks of it (I just watched the game again last night) Payton completely fell off the wagon about then too.

TheOak 09-24-2011 05:59 AM

Challenging penalties would make games last for ever. Apologies just well.... suck

I prefer a more provocative approach. The person making the call should have some "skin in the game"...

Make a bad call, the "non offending" player gets a 20 yard run to put his face mask through your sternum. We can keep an extra set of kicker shoulder pads on the side line so the ref doesn't get too hurt.

Lets have a little old fashioned accountability.
