Saints looking for sponsors to have naming rights on the Superdome

1 Attachment(s)
  • For as long as anyone can remember, the home of the New Orleans Saints has been the Louisiana Superdome. Now in the time of corporate sponsorship though, it appears as if Louisiana is jumping in the boat to get one for the Dome. A photo taken by an eyewitness actually showed a sign outside the Dome recently that was only there a short period of time and read "Mercedes-Benz Superdome."

Other eyewitnesses confirmed this happened and that the sign was also rolled back up by crews a short time later.
On Thursday night, Saints Vice President of Communications Greg Bensel confirmed what some saw and said the team has been pitching the naming-rights idea to several different companies. The sign photographed was only one of many that have already been made actually.

The "Slap Yo Mamma" Superdome.

Anything not local will be unacceptable.

The Tabasco Dome

They can name it whatever they want. I will never call it anything other than the Superdome anyways.

Louisiana Taxpayers paid for it (at five times cost promised) and now that's not enough...

Thieves...

The New Orleans Saints are in the city through the 2025 season after signing a lease extension with the state back in April of 2009. Terms of the new contract state that the Saints keep 100 percent of the naming rights revenue which means a big-time company coming in and buying the rights could mean serious money for the organization.

But, seriously, if that statement is true... at least it would guarantee that the Saints would probably be able to continue to spend right up to the salary cap in seasons to come.

Ashley 09-23-2011 06:58 AM

Didn't they try this before with no luck? I guess a winning team now will make a difference?

xan 09-23-2011 07:10 AM

Naming rights only matter if the stadium is mentioned frequently on National TV. Which means that the Saints must be competitively relevant over the rights period. Payton's locked through 15, Brees is 31 and no contract. We don't have a history of continuity. My bet is that we'll need several more years of high profile presence to merit naming rights.

That being said, I like Tabasco Dome. or, the BP Dome (they owe us).

SaintGup 09-23-2011 07:50 AM

I know that there is money to be had but I think Green Bay has it right and will keep it named after someone affiliated with the organisation (I know that the people own this team in part so that will have an effect) I hated when Huskie Stadium, Candlestick Park and RFK disappeared. Corporations have there fingers in so many pies it sickens me...I really hate finger pie.

If I were going to sell-out the Superdome to a sponsor, I wouldn't commit to just 1 sponsor. I'd have a rotating sponsorship or I'd sell the rights to have a company name in the title to the highest bidder from season to season. That way you wouldn't be stuck with a sponsor that goes bankrupt, or goes out of business, or does something in the market place that you wouldn't want your Dome associated with. Like, can you imagine being stuck with a name "The Enron Superdome"? Or the "Solyndra Superdome"? No, you wouldn't. But you could sell-out to a sponsor for a season to someone like Zatarain's, and for that season it would be the Zatarain's Louisiana Superdome.

Well I think that even a standard sponsorship contract has stipulations in place, which would negate the chance of something like which you described happening.

But what do I know... dropped out of business school after two years and went ahead and got an arts degree instead. http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/emb/t1841.gif

Problem is it was purchased by the taxpaying residents of Louisiana back in the mid-'70's.

No, you weren't issued ownership certificates, but how does a state sell what belongs to the people without compensating the people?

Up here, in a couple weeks, I'll receive a check for oil royalties. $1,279 bones this year. From the State of Alaska. No income tax. No sales tax. Now THIS is the way the government should operate!!!

By the way, I'll be blowing mine in the Quarter when the Lions come to town!!

Srgt. Hulka 09-23-2011 04:48 PM

They're not selling the Superdome Alaska, they're just selling the rights to put a corporate name on it, that's all. The Dome still belongs to the state of Louisiana, it just won't be called the Louisiana Superdome anymore, it's going to be called something really lame, depending on who comes up with the most money.

foreverfan 09-23-2011 04:53 PM

Didn't the State pay Benson enough money to name it the Louisiana Superdome?

Maybe they should call it the FEMA Dome.

AlaskaSaints 09-23-2011 05:07 PM

I realize that, Hulka, but it's already named after the people who paid for it. I didn't make that very clear, sorry. Just hate to have you guys get rights sold out from under you.

I mean, if the bid is high enough, it will be the "Saudi Royal Family Superdome" and that is B.S.

Personally I have always hated the selling of naming rights to stadiums and bowl games etc. Some things should be off limits. Can you imagine selling naming rights to Death Valley, or for me Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium. I know theres lots of $$$ involved but it doesn't mean I have to like it. These days in sports every little thing has a corporate sponsor, the 1st qtr is brought you by Fedex etc. Just getting sick of it.

What if the money earned by sponsership of Vaught Hemmingway stadium went back into the program and Ole Miss could quit settling for worst team in the SEC, then would you hate it?

FinSaint 09-24-2011 05:59 AM

I still think that my earlier point remains valid, in that if the money made from this sponsorship deal is needed in order to assure that the Saints can remain competitive regarding their salary budget and the ability to spend right up to the cap... I don't care if the dome is called the "Sugar Shack Dome," because the name doesn't make a place and vice versa.

It just makes me wonder if there is a real financial need for something like this, because I would like to think that the organization wouldn't take on this type of an endeavor if it wasn't financially necessary.

We all know that Mr. Benson has a history of being a little stingy with his purse when it comes to player salaries, and while that has seemingly changed in the SP/ML era - it was mentioned in some article I read that Mr. Benson doesn't necessarily have the funds to keep up this trend of spending for long. This new project might be something that Rita Benson has come up with in order to refresh the money inflow, and to secure the Saints' ability to stay financially competitive. If so, I give it a "thumbs up!"

At least that is my view on this topic.

That is probably a bad example. I don't think money is the problem in Oxford...and you could give them all the money in Saudi Arabia and they still would be cellar dwellers, IMO.

I created this years ago when this topic was brought up in another *unspoken of* saints forum

Benson is trying to get Mercedes-Benz to bait and bite...

State of Louisiana obtained the LL&E Building next to the Superdome for Benson...

Not sure the details have ever been publicly confirmed...

Fin, that was pretty psychic on your part about Rita Benson. Word has it that she was the one who got the ball rolling on the Mercedes-Benz deal.
Got any insight into the next drawing of Powerball lottery numbers you want to share?
