Offseason rankings: Ignore the Super Bore

By Rob Hurtt - SportingNews.com

Football is not all about winning and losing. Give me the exciting but imperfect Colts and Rams any day over the New Eng-bland Patriots and equally dull Carolina Panthers. Congrats, boys, you made it to the Super Bowl. Don't mind me, and my remote; we won't be staying long.

Some people are trying to find a redeeming quality in this Super Bowl matchup. I've given up that quest. I would have better luck uncovering the Holy Grail or the lost city of Atlantis.

Admit it. Houston, we have a snooze-fest.

Sure, the game could be close, but it still will be boring. No need to worry about shameless celebrations in the end zone. Only a Gramatica could get pumped about this field-goal fest.

The worst part is we still have 10-plus days of hype for a game that even P.T. Barnum would have trouble selling. Step right up folks. Gaze upon Jake Delhomme, the most average quarterback in the world. He will stun you with his ability to put defenses (and fans) to sleep.

Don't get me wrong; I'll still watch the game, and no, not just for the commercials. Nevertheless, I'm worried that the most exhilarating point of the evening will be checking out my friend's new flat-screen TV, not the game.

To prevent myself from snoozing on the couch and becoming a giant, snoring drool bucket, I'll chat with fellow fantasy owners about the 2004 season. It's never too early to begin thinking about next season, especially when the alternative is watching a Super Bowl only a narcoleptic could love.

Which is all Carolina actually wanted or needed.

I agree Danno. They had the situation where they only needed an average QB. However, can a average QB get it done against the Pats? What if the Panthers get behind and need to turn into a passing offense against a good defense to win the super bowl? What if Jake fails because he doesn\'t have the talent to carry an offense as a QB?

Isn\'t the idea to win a Super Bowl? What if the only thing that prevented the Panthers from winning a Super Bowl was signing an average Jake Delhomme instead of an very good QB like Drew Bledsoe? That would sure leave a bad taste in my mouth if I were a Panthers\' fan. Just think, all that talent on the Panthers and they didn\'t sign a QB that could really perform.
