THE DEFENSE

in your best and honest opinions about whats going on and what we need to fix the dam thing.
i'm going to start off and say stop the profolic blitzing schemes and stay more in common 4-3 packages. blitz vilma more he'd be more unseen step up the debacks on supposidly man to man coverage so they can at least try to throw off the timing route. does anyone notice the striping technics is out the window. okay next.

Budsdrinker 10-19-2011 12:26 PM

Get up on the line of scrimmage and bump your guy at the snap to throw off the timming of their routes.

boonedocksaint 10-19-2011 12:59 PM

tackle better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Euphoria 10-19-2011 01:08 PM

...another defense thread.

LOL.

Look you don't want to simplify things at all. What you need to do is teach and coach up the fundamentals. You have some guys in position to make a play and they miss it. Robinson is the only one I trust making a tackle right now. The problem is planning and play calling the problem is the guys aren't doing the fundamentals such as tackling.

Another reason we aren't getting a pass rush... fundamentals of our D guys not using their hand technics in hand to hand combat and getting in there.

Its all in the coaching if they actually realize they have to coach the guys in these areas we'd be better off.

I'd like to see more bump and run. Likely get burned just as much but there's a greater chance of a bad throw or tip ball up for grabs and right now we can't win without a turnover. And the stripping the ball, we need to get away from that and concentrate on tackling. It was a gimmick that worked well for a while. If you watch teams now there is more focus on holding on to the ball around the Saints.

absolutely! GREAT point on going for the strip a little too much. i totally agree that when offenses are gearing up to face us, they're coaches are drilling them on ball security because thats something greg williams had made known he's going to have his players go for every game.

just like the coaches always know our db's will jump the routes. just watch film of hasselbeck and the seahawks taking advantage of this with pumpfakes in the playoff game last season.

Whatever Sean (a tiger can't change his stripes) Rogers and Abreyou ( I miss Patrick Willis) Franklin were supposed to be - i haven't seen since the niners preseason game.

Is Will Smith still suspended? I don't see him.

Shanle needs a rascal to reach the sidelines.

I something wrong with Porter? Why is Jenkins always cheating to his side of the field?

Something tells me Ellis and Rogers aren't gelling - and they won't.

Rugby Saint II 10-19-2011 03:01 PM

Our two new defensive tackles are out of shape and don't have any stamina. They have a rotation but it's not enough. They may be too old to condition before they just wear out. Ellis does fine.......he's just not elite. We let another opportunity for an upgrade slip away. from the DT's

Word to your mother!!

Tackle - tackle tackle OH & lets get some Ints!!

SaintPauly 10-22-2011 12:42 PM

More pressure up front, would be a domino effect, for the better, for every level of our defense..... They need to get to the qb, without blitzing every down.

LSU1984 10-22-2011 12:56 PM

The Saints are horrible on defense. If they had one, they would be a dynasty. Their 3rd down wins are abysmal. They cannot get off the field, therefore Drew and the offense if off the field. They cannot tackle, too much diving at feet with head down. Harper is digustingly bad at tackling (ie. Marshawn Lynch run)There is no pressure on the QB and absolutely worse of all, they cannot stop the run!

Can't single out Harper on the Marshawn Lynch run; the whole defense was disgustlingly bad at tackling that day.

halloween 65 10-22-2011 02:53 PM

If they bring in a bangbacker, maybe Bussey, move Vilma in for Shanle," teams wear him out" shade Harper to the youth, " I know I'm crazy, but we would be strong on the run".

AllSaints 10-22-2011 03:03 PM

Tackling................. ! ! ! ! ! !

hitta 10-22-2011 03:07 PM

At the beginning of the season, it looked as if our DEs would be the weak part of the D-line and the DTs would be strong, but it's been totally opposite from that.

Our DEs have been somewhat surprising to me, as we seem to get around the edge a lot more pressure from the outside than we have had in the past few years. Cameron Jordan has played rather well imo , and Will Smith still looks pretty good. Of course, getting pressure from the edges doesn't mean a whole lot if you don't push the QBs pocket back. Our DTs have just been flat out terrible, and its a damn shame considering how much of a priority we made it in the off season. They are the biggest problem on the team and if we got some production out of them I think most of the problems that most people are poking at would go away.

Linebackers have looked pretty bad as well, though tbh, I think this is something we can resolve as we have a lot of parts to mix and match. I'm hoping Wilson comes around.

I'm not really sure that DBs are the problem on this team(though I think Harper can definitely be a liability). Yes we give up a lot of passing yard, I just don't think it is because of poor coverage. When you have time to throw the ball, and you allow the QB to a clean throwing lane, your DBs are going to give up yards in the passing game. There's really no way around that. The only game I thought our DBs looked horrible was the game in GB and that was the first game of the year. They've improved a lot since.

SaintPauly 10-22-2011 03:58 PM

Well, it could be worse.... WE COULD BE THE EAGLES!!!! LMAO....

Even worse than that; we could be Falcon fans :puke:

SaintPauly 10-22-2011 04:07 PM

I just remember going into the season, the Eagles were heralded for their free agent signings, the "dream team" bs, while our FA moves were hardly talked about.... So far, the only FA that we signed, that I see tearing it up is Sproles.... But at 4-2, it's hardly over for the season. Eagles? heh heh heh.... can't say that about them.... They will go down in history, as the highest paid NFL team, to NOT make the play offs...

FireVenturi 10-22-2011 04:25 PM

All of the above :)

The front line need to get in the mix - quiack and hard.

Saintswrath 10-23-2011 03:39 PM

Saints can fix defense by doing this..

1. Throw away and forget about everything they've been coached, taught and trained about in defense all this season.
2. Go back to the fundamentals.
3. Get some Vets on the D side of the roster that are aggressive ol'e fashion untamed gorilla's.
4. DC need to get back that swag he had when he first came to the Saints, Gregg Williams seem to have gotten really soft after the Superbowl, almost nonchalant.

This D has me more worried than anything, they have contributed the most to our losses more than the few critical interceptions by Drew Brees. Brees can make up for his errors though, our D seems to just lay down and take it when they're getting beat down.
