TMQ - Worst Play of 2011, so far...

DISCLAIMER: DO NOT read it if you are already over the TB game. However, this'll be good for dramatic effect for the 2011 Saints DVD...

From ESPN's TMQ by Gregg Easterbrook:

"Single Worst Play of the Season -- So Far: Trailing 26-20 at City of Tampa, the Saints faced fourth-and-2 on the Buccaneers' 4-yard line with 3:24 remaining. Backup head coach Joe Vitt, sent in for injured starting head coach Sean Payton, decided to go for it. Drew Brees play-faked and rolled right. The New Orleans offensive linemen faked a zone block left -- and then all five Saints' offensive linemen simply stood there watching as Brees scrambled madly, making no attempt to block or help.

Bad enough the call was a pass. When Brees threw an interception into the end zone, the Bucs took possession on their 20: a failed run would have pinned City of Tampa against its own goal line with three minutes to play and New Orleans holding all its timeouts.

But it's fourth down at the endgame and all five New Orleans offensive linemen simply brushed their men then turned around to watch the play, making no attempt to do anything. New Orleans offensive line -- you are guilty of the single worst play of the 2011 season. So far."

Good points, but its kinda 20/20 hindsight.

I know Brees was having a bit of an off day, but I still have no problem with putting a game winning play in the hands of Drew Brees, regardless of down or distance.

Yep our O-Line is getting useless

Mardigras9 10-21-2011 09:12 AM

Drew was the right call. Run game had been stuffed pretty much all day. If Drew would have looked back left endzone we would be having a totally different conversation. It was a matter of time before our 4th quarter luck ran out anyway......moving on.

OP's point is that the play call wasn't what was bad. It was the O-Line's execution.

No, he says the play call was bad as well.

Drew was the best option - PERIOD. At this point he had only two picks - and in essence 1 pick.
He was not "really" having a bad day.
I just wish they had spread the field and gave him Moore options.
It's hard to pick a worst play, because it always seems to get worse, and then worser.
This pic caught my attention last week:

Our Father, which art in heaven, please tell me I got him.

Last line of his post, which seems to suggest he was talking specifically about their performance, especially since the O-Line doesn't call the plays:

"New Orleans offensive line -- you are guilty of the single worst play of the 2011 season. So far."

But I agree with you that if the game's on the line, I want the ball in Drew's hands.

It was an assistants call that didn't work.....simple enough. btw Our Oline sucks and looked gassed on the play. Brown whiffed on the DE which changed the whole structure of the play.

RaginCajun83 10-21-2011 12:41 PM

Oline screwed that play up, come on man what team wouldn't put the ball in their QBs hands if it was Drew back there. Once again back***wards journalism by ESPN
