While I don't think the Saints would be near an often playoff team without Brees, I do think they'd still have a chance at being a good team.

Brees is the type of QB that finishes, changes, and ultimately decides a game. But, there has been instances where teams with rather lackluster QB's have down well. (Jets of today, Ravens with Dilfer, on and on)

I do think the items are in place for a new QB talent to come in and progress. But will the Saints ever be the team they are now with Brees? No.

Brees probably has 4-5 very good years left in the tank. Finding a succesor to sit on the sidelines for that length of time seems a bit premature. Steve Young and Aaron Rodgers are the only 2 QBs that come to mind that were able to make their fans forget their predecessors after spending a petiod of time holding the clipboard.

That was before Free Agency. It could never happen again. :smokin:

I thought exactly the same thing.

I think Sean Payton makes the difference.
He is smart enough not to put a weak arm in strong arm situations.
Payton would scheme to the strengths of whoever our backup would be.
The level of talent that he keeps on the offensive roster would allow even a mediocre QB some success.
We may not light up SportsCenter, but we would look nothing like Indy did Sunday night.

PS- Manning being hurt has nothing to do with the Colts poor showing on defense.

Also, I know that while I love many of our players, many of them are average at best and Brees play at quarterback makes offensive components better and erases bad performances by the defense. (Dwight Freeney, where has thou star gone without Peyton?)

If I'm Coach P, I'm kicking Mickey and that scouting department in their ass to find me Drew's line of succession...

I get the feeling Payton and Drew will probably leave at the same time. When Drew is done, Payton heads to NFLN or retires outright.

^This. The 2 QB's mentioned above Young and Rodgers only sat on the bench for 3 years before they were the starters. Barring the worst event possible Brees has probably 5-6 good years left and there is no way you can get his replacement now or in the next 2 years. Brees' replacement is probably a senior in high school right now!

Yep. The Colts are also missing their best LB Brackett and DB Bullit who are on IR.

The Irsay management team have gone all in on Manning, giving him a $100 million contract and leaving no room for much else. That team has no depth, no balance and no future. It will be 3-5 years before they can claim enough parts, train enough and establish an identity that can compete at a playoff level.

I'm not going to say that Brees isn't worth $100 million. I am saying we got a huge look through the crystal ball at what our future will be. Brees doesnt even need to get injured, the impending rot will infuse the core and we will be what we have spent 44 years trying to shed.

We MUST find the next Brees and set him up for success. We cannot be certain of avoiding the colts fate, but we have to not repeat their colossal failure to contingency plan. We must lobby Saints management not to go all in on one player. There is NO excuse given the horrifying display last night

Is Brunell available?

This is why we have so many running backs. :bng:
