What got you here...... won't get you there.

In 2009 the Greg Williams Defense was a thorn in the side of other NFL teams, they were not completely sure how to counter it effectively for more than a handful of plays.

In 2011 the Rams have that sorted out....

Our Defense is now being used by other teams, although no one else blitzes to the extent we do... Obviously if I know a Defense is going to blitz 90% of the time then I have at least a 75% chance of having an idea of what is coming at my QB. Screens are eating our lunch these days... Although we barely seem to be able to pull one of our own off.

Then again in 2009 Darren Sharper was intercepting the hell out of everyone and turnovers were one of our defenses strongest points.

In 2009 Sean Payton's "spread the ball around" offense was driving defenses nuts. Now, if you look at the stats this week, Pittsburgh hit 4 receivers for over 60 yards (6 over 20 yards), Giants 4 over 50, and 6 over 20... Other teams are copying it also.

What got us to the Super Bowl and won it for us in 2009 is not going to work again. Apparently..... Obviously..... Once could conclude....

Time to change the way we play the game. Two seasons ago teams saw our "style" twice a year.... Now they are seeing it 6-7 times a year.

If Payton and Williams were genius enough to invent the round wheel once, they need to start looking at new inventions.... These days it seems everyone has round wheels.

Very well put.

The stuff that worked in 2009 isn't going to work for us for consecutive years after that, teams study what we do and GW never changes anything. Just blitz and it doesn't work. The style needs to change, every team has studied our defense which has been the same for 3 years now, change the D scheme or get some body new.
That being said, the offensive line and the play calling pretty much lost this game for us, it sucks but we got to move on

I am still not sure why we were running so much and burning clock in the second half.

Am I correct when I assume from what was being said Pre-Game that Sean Payton was NOT doing the play calling for this game? It was Pete Carmichael in the first half?

Our blitz was working very well for the first few series, then the Rams did a nice job adjusting. The blitz was actually more effective than it was some days, it created our first 7 points for us.

Simple things lost us the game - execution, poor pass protection, not throwing the ball deep, running when we should be passing, passing when we should be running, poor tackling, poor pursuit angles, etc.

The Colts win lulled us to sleep - it got us to forget how to play against an opponent with pride that would show up - and thus we forgot to show up. If wholesale changes are necessary we should wait until the offseason.

Which to give Payton and Williams credit "may".... "could"... have been in the works for this season but with out an off season, you have to roll with what ya have.

The play calling may have been "off" due to Pete making the calls.... I do not remember so many "WTF" moments regarding play calling watching any other Saints game in the last few years.

Except for the onsides kick durring the Super Bowl which I said "balls of Stainless Steel"....

Biggest difference is we got those TOs in 09...we had 3 sure INTs yesterday and dropped all 3...I know its been beat to death but Sharper was the biggest reason for our success on D in 09...he doesn't drop gifts..

Danno 10-31-2011 08:45 AM

Our offense...

Time - Drive Began - # of Plays - Yards - Gained - Result
2:51 -NO -15 -7 -28 Punt
3:47 -NO -42 -7 -27 Missed FG
2:40 -NO -16 -5 -10 Punt
4:00 -NO -23 -7 -25 Punt
0:29 -NO -25 -4 -5 Blocked Punt
0:12 -NO -12 -1 -0 Interception
0:17 -NO -28 -1 - 1 End of Half
3:16 -NO -15 -5 - 12 Punt
3:02 -NO -17 -5 - 19 Punt

Against one of the worst defenses in the NFL.

That gets any NFL defense beaten.

What you guys are missing is the Rams came to play. They showed up and played awesome defense.

You have to give their D credit for that performance. They were all over the place and blew up our Tackles.

Their O well all I have to say is Steven Jackson. The man put the game on his back and he fired those crappy players up just enough.

For the life of me I can't figure out that you go into the game knowing all they have is Steven Jackson and a back up QB... hmmm lets take away the run and its game over. And here is the flaw with our team DEFENSE. Can't stop the outside runs to save their lives.

Point the finger at the offense all ya like... that is fine for this game but there is a huge flaw with this team if our O has a bad game I can live with it but I can't get over how piss poor our defense is and flawed. This isn't one game for them this goes back to Seattle which was suppose to have been fixed... they were upset and pissed about it. Seattle took their man card and we haven't got it back yet.

Since we are all being honest here:
  • 1. Yes Sharper was the golden child. (may still be)
  • 2. We have NEVER been a shutdown Defense. 2011 "27 th in league for points allowed" (more times than not "5-8" teams scored at least 20 points on us), 2010 "7th in league for points allowed" (more times than not "9" teams scored at least 20 points on us), 2009 "20th in league for points allowed" (more times than not "10" teams scored at least 20 points on us)... We have always been able to overcome that with our high scoring Offense. So our Defense is on par except for take TO's. Actually this year except for interceptions we are on track with 2009.
  • 3. The run has always killed us.
  • 4. We do not just have some slightly weak spots in our Defense, we have glaring weaknesses that opponents capitalize on.

When you blitz 99% of the time the run will killl ya..

I've already said it and everybody knew it when I did...

We are GOING TO HAVE TO SCORE 30+ A GAME to have success this year, period. Paragraph.

Having said that, as I've already said in another thread and Danno pointed out quite well a few posts above, our "D" was hanging in there until Special Teams and the offense coughed up consecutive hair balls late in the second quarter...and we did precisely nadda to get ahead from the start of the damn game up until then.

This one goes squarely on the shoulders of the Offense.
