Defense Beware!!!!!

Quote:

This is a no-brainer, break the bank on this guy.

Wilson could be one of 2-3 big FA pick-ups this offseason and would allow us to take a sensible draft strategy instead of forcing every new pick to be a starter and picking strictly based on need.

Wilson and Sapp or Wilson and Bryant would give us a LOT of freedom on draft day.

I\'d rather see us pickup a free agent corner (maybe Woodson or Byrant). Then take a LB in the first round (either Jon Vilma or DJ Williams). None of the corners in the draft look like future all-stars, except for potientially Chris Gamble, but he would take at least a year to develop. Williams and Vilma on the other hand look to be potential superstars.

Saintsfan200, I don\'t remember any of your other posts, but this post actually has some intelligence behind it, unlike many others I see around here. You are correct, while there might be many CB\'s selected on the first day of the draft, none are ready to make an immediate impact, ala Terrance Newman. Most of these CB\'s are project players, most are undersized, with the exception of Narond Alexander, Chris Gamble, Dunta Robinson, and Keith Smith, but even then, alexander, Robinson, and Smith could stand to gain some weight, which isn\'t that hard. I personally like Gamble, just like you. But, I would like to see us draft two corners, possibly Colclough with one of our 2nd rounders and Alexander with our 3rd or 5th, unless Gamble was there for us in the 1st.
But if we have a chance to get Wilson, I do not believe we can pass this up. With our current CB situation, Fred Thomas is almost a lock for one of the spots, the other to be won by Ambrose (who we all know is old), Brown (he showed me something in that game against Dallas), or someone we draft/sign. This draft, unlike last years, is making my head dizzy. would have been so much easier if we would have picked Trufant in the first like I said we should have....

I agree that Wilson is someone that you can’t pass on. However I really doubt that he will be let go that easily. He will be franchised along with Champ Bailey and Chris McAlister. All three of these players, if not franchised, should be sought after hard core. I think everyone realizes that CB and LB are our two main focuses. Both of which I feel we should try to pick up in FA. Then supplement in the draft. I would foresee only being able to pick up one great FA and another to fill the gap (but still better than average). I would be interested to see what happens in Denver as I would take either Wilson or Gold. Wilson is a no brainer, but Gold has great speed and amazing potential. If we were to take Gold, then he isn’t even close to the salary of Wilson. That leaves us open to get a top grade CB (ie. Woodson, Springs). If we were to pick up Wilson, then we can go for someone at CB like Winfield (don’t know what his salary is like, but I think it is not close to the upper tier level).

Question: I haven’t seen a lot of Cie. Is he better suited to middle or outside? This would factor in on who we would be looking to pick up. If we think that Cie can be a stud in the middle, then lets look for someone outside, and vice versa.

Two comments:

I may be completely and utterly mistaken, but I do not see the Falcons being any good next year. They do not have the defensive personel or the money to pursue them. Mora, Jr. may prove me wrong, but I\'m not quaking in my shorts at the idea of playing him twice a year. His resume sounds kinda familiar to me... hmm... young, defensive-minded coach... no head-coaching experience... Like I said, I could be wrong.

I would much rather sign a corner (even a 2nd tier one) than spend a first round pick on one. Don\'t you guys remember Molden?!?! I still ache from the muscles I tore in my arm throwing bottles and remotes and pets at the tv screaming for this guy to cover somebody beside the opposing LT. In my opinion, this draft has many linebackers who could start and impact our defense right away. With corners, I see the words, \"development\", \"project\" and/or \"potential.\"

Kinda tired of those words.

Up until recently, it seemed Haslett was dead set on putting Cie Grant at MLB. I thought before the draft even occured, and there are others here that relay the same sentiment, that he would be more of an impact player at weak side linebacker.
Whowatches- I share your feelings on the CB class, but I do believe that Gamble is the real deal, and is head and shoulders above the rest of the class.

I agree that I wouldn\'t want to see a CB as our frist pick, however I will take that over anyone on O. I can\'t say that I am sold on Gamble yet. He has only had one full year playing at CB. I put him in the same catagory as Danta Robinson. Both have good physical assests, but are a bit to inexperienced at the position. Hopefully we will fill the void of CB during FA, and then pick up someone for development, but again, I wouldn\'t want to spend a first rounder on it. Especially if someone like Vilma or Williams are still around.

Here is the answer on Mc Alister

Ravens, McAlister talk long-term deal
Franchise tag likely used on cornerback if contract not agreed on by Feb. 24

A month away from the start of free agency, Ravens officials said cornerback Chris McAlister likely will not hit the open market.
The Ravens are \"heavy\" in negotiations on a long-term contract with the Pro Bowl defender, but they seem ready to name him their franchise player again if no deal can be reached by Feb. 24, the NFL\'s deadline for assigning the tag.

Since McAlister was the team\'s franchise player last year, he would receive a one-year deal worth $7.2 million (a 120 percent raise from last year\'s contract).

The tag virtually locks him into returning since no team is expected to match the offer and give the Ravens two first-round draft picks as compensation. It also doesn\'t stop the Ravens from reaching a long-term deal at a later date.

Cie Grant in the middle .

Great , He will most likely earn the nickname See Ya Grant , as backs like Davis drag him into the endzone .He was originally projected as a safety in the N.F.L.

I agree. Those words seem to be the key to understand Haslett\'s entire run as head coach here.

Our personnel moves are utterly baffling to me at times. It would be different if we had the Patriots knack for putting together a team, but Haslett doesn\'t seem to have that aptitude. I\'d MUCH rather try and address our critical needs in FA with proven commodities, even though they are expensive. Haslett seems to have Mike Martz syndrome when it comes to draft day.

If we could pick up Wilson, Bryant, and Washington. Or Wilson, Bryant and Sapp, I think we could make allowance for Martz syndrome on draft day.

The LAST thing the Saints need to do is sign Sapp. The guy is cancer, and no longer has the skills to back up his mouth. If the Saints were to pick up a DT in free agency, I think the Titans Robaire Smith would be a great pickup. While Smith is not a top tier DT, he is a solid, high motor player, and would not come anywhere near the price of Sapp. Rotating Robaire with Kenny Smith, another high motor player, would cause OL\'s a few headaches.

I see alot of responses like...
(don\'t want a CB in first round)
As far as I\'m concerned every guy in the draft is a \"reach\" There are no can\'t miss guys.
I jsut don\'t want to miss out on defensive needs another year. Just b/c you guys don\'t see Mel Kiper Jr. talking up a lot of CB\'s... don\'t think there aren\'t any good ones in the draft. No one talked up Rasehan Mathis last year and he is quality. Saints could have had him... No one talked up Ricky Manning Jr. last year...Quality.
When GM\'s and coaches do their homework and teach their rookies good things happen.
Let\'s not be afraid to take a chance...
