Interesting theory about Ingram going forward

From Rotowire so it's Fantasy based.
I thought that it's interesting enough to post during a bye week.

With Drew Brees reaching 37 straight games with a touchdown pass, 10 short of Johnny Unitas' record streak of 47 consecutive games, there could be a growing emphasis in the Saints' play-calling to make sure Brees reaches that mark, potentially to the detriment of Mark Ingram.

Spin: Certainly neither Saints' coaches nor Brees would openly admit that the record is of any importance, but the fact is that Unitas' record has stood for over 50 years. The Saints are already a pass-happy offense but could see an increase in red-zone throws if Brees needs a touchdown to keep his streak alive. Ingram, who leads the Saints in rushing touchdowns, would likely be the one to suffer, especially since he has little value as a receiver. With the messy situation at running back in New Orleans, Brees' pursuit only complicates matters for the rookie back.

The breaking of that record will be a natural occurrence. It almost seems automatic, and Drew deserves it regardless of whose stats get in the way.

It's a collective sigh of relief each week that we all take, then the rest of the game the situation dictates. NOT that we cannot get a rushing touchdown first, but Drew needs this. We need this. The NFL needs this.

I feel the same about the '72 Dolphins' record, but I don't want it to be this year's Packers to do it. I was pulling for the Patriots in '08 and they went down in flames.

You may be onto something!

Wasn't the train wreck, also known as Week 8 (Saints vs Rams) almost over before Brees threw a TD pass?

The chance of Brees not breaking this record would rank 2nd behind death by meteorite.

arsaint 11-18-2011 07:15 PM

I don't think these guys care much about stats.

We pulled Brees in the Colts game and he could have set all kinds of records and extended his 350 yd passing streak.

Saints pulled Brees because there was absolutly no need to for him to still be playing and risk injury, i.e Mark Ingram.

If the Colts weren't playing flatter than a half-dollar after inflation, then Brees may have stayed in the game.

I think it will occur naturally as well. Mostly........

I like to think that our final drive for a TD in the Rams game was to give a confidence boost. The bottom line is, there is no conceivable way that the Saints could have won that game at that point.

That was to keep Drew's streak alive.

...and then it would have ended the following week! LOL

Honestly, Drew looked a little disappointed when pulled from that game. I'm all for him setting all the records he can set --- In the Superbowl --- This year.

WAIT A SECOND HERE!!!! Maybe the loss to the Rams wasn't so accidental after all. If we play the remaining 6 games in the regular season then go to the playoffs as a wild card and make it to the Super Bowl....that's 10 games. Ah ha!!! That's why they look so good sometimes. The Saints are intentionally losing so they get a wild card birth instead of having a bye week!!! They are going to try to tie the record in the Super Bowl! It all makes sense!!!!! Sean Payton and Drew are conspirators!!!

Here's another record within reach...

Sounds a lot like the nuttball theories as to why Reggie Bush wasn't setting the world on fire in his first few years as a Saint.

homerj07 11-18-2011 10:51 PM

Sorry guys -SCREW records!!

Win the damn games. You are telling me anyone of us here would not have wanted a win voer St L with no TD by Drew?

Marlboro Man 11-19-2011 12:11 AM

I know ya'll think I rag on Ingram a lot, but I'm not down on him personally, I just don't think he's all that and I wish we would have kept our draft picks cause he just isn't all that good. He's got the same vision problems Reggie has and he doesn't have the power everyone thought he had. Maybe in college but this is the pros and it's showing that he's just another short, regular RB that could have been had in the second round. I said before the season started that he would not be OROY and now everyone else is seeing it too. We could have had another good OLB or even DT or OLT and what we got was no second round pick and no 1st round pick this year either. That's gonna let the Panthers and Atl. catch and maybe pass us in the talent dept., well maybe not Atl. cause they screwed up and made a dumb trade too.

subguy 11-19-2011 06:15 AM

I would tell you that the record is in everyone's mind, but I truly don't think anyone would alter the gameplan for the record. I also don't think they need too, he has been working at the record whether he meant to or not.

ScottF 11-19-2011 06:55 AM

point 1: we pulled Drew vs Indy, but let him pad stats against Rams: one record was attainable, the other, probably not
point 2: In the next 3 years, we will not win a game without a Drew TD pass

and point 3: Why would anybody have Ingram as their fantasy RB????

Cruize 11-19-2011 07:18 AM

Payton doesn't need an excuse to throw it 50 times.

Nailed it!

Other than the wildcard Sproles, none of our RB's are worth a fantasy spot. Maybe on larger rosters you can stash one because if an injury or two occurs, one of these guys will double their stats.

Just my luck that injured RB would be mine.

Don't think playoff games count towards the streak. Only regular season games.

halloween 65 11-19-2011 10:48 AM

I would like to see the Saints break all kind of records, except the bad ones,we probably still hold a few of those. Only if we are playing to win and not for individual stats, Brees could have had Marinos record already and Payton chose to sit him, I believe it was like 16 yards short not for sure though, but with that and that alone makes me feel it is about winning as a team. How many people get that close to any record and don't get the green light to go?

NOS2SB 11-19-2011 10:51 AM

I don't think we will see an overzealous emphasis on throwing for TDs until he gets within 5 of the record.

UK_WhoDat 11-19-2011 02:51 PM

I think the record or many records are on Drew's mind. The guy is a computer and he had formatted every play before he enters the field.
