I was sitting in Texas Stadium in my Saints gear that night. Longest ride home in my life.

I checked--it was a Sunday night.
I was in the lobby of a Kent State dorm watching the game by myself. Classmates kept telling me the game was over.

PS: it was the same dorm where ex-Saint great Usama Young lived many years later

note: ScottF and I are talking about a game vs. the Cowboys in '84, where we blew a 21 point lead.

Scott, you're right, and I remember it well. It was
a Sunday night, but it was a special Sunday night edition of "Monday Night Football," if that makes sense. Kinda like they used to do on Thurs. It was produced by MNF and ABC, and wouldve had Gifford and Cosell, (I never saw the telecast. ) But it was "Monday Night Football." I know that, because I remember the promos. So it probably started off with DAH DAH DAH DAH! (bom-bom, bom, bom!)

Also, "Dandy" Don Meredith was being honored with something--- I think into the Cowboys Ring of Honor, I'm not 100% sure of that. But I remember him riding around the field in a convertible. I also remember being surprised by how silver his hair had turned. I think he was doing the telecast, and went down the elevator before halftime.

Also, that night was a nationally televised debate between Reagan & Mondale, so they had to move the kickoff to 9pm! So when the Cowboys Rafael Septien drove a stake thru my heart with the game winning FG, it was about 1am.

I dont think we expected a win, or even a 21 point lead, but when a Cowboy CB slipped on an out-route from Richard Todd, Tyrone (Ty in the Sky) Young scored, we were just like, "Holy Wow!" A little crack in my memory says Tyrone dunked the ball over the goalpost, and got flagged.

A hearbreaking loss, and miserable ride home, but you know, I'm glad I went. Saw sights I'll never forget.

Bum chatting with Tom Landry before the game was exactly like you would picture it.

Also, Saints fans were about a 4th of the Stadium. I know one of the endzones was all US. This was back when our black fans wore those yellow t-shirts--remember how vidid that looked? It was outstanding, and the Cowboy fans were clearly offended by our invasion. Not to mention we were louder than the shocked home crowd. I remember walking thru the lot, and some kids looking at me like I was from Mars, astonished that the Saints had fans.

I also saw a salt and pepper haired guy named Leo, who they showed on tv often-- he had a giant fleur de lis flag, before everyone had giant flags. You've seen this guy before. He waived his flag at me, when I pulled into the lot. I guess he couldnt see my Saints gear, so when I flashed back my Saints pennant, his tailgate party erupted.

When Stabler came in, I told the Cowboy fan next to me, not to leave. Thats how ominious it was. If Richard Todd could have just not gotten hurt. I cant stop thinking that.

Oh well, we got our revenge when Morten hit that 51 yarder in the Dome in '88, and also the 28-0 "welcome to the league" for Troy Aikman in '89. And then a couple more little celebrations on Bourbon St, just 2 years ago. I hope all those black people who wore yellow t-shirts in 1984, and all the heartbroken WhoDats from that bad night-- were watching Super Bowl XLIV. All of us deserved the big party we got.
