The thing that really opened my eyes on this situation is the fact that if we were to come up with a blockbuster trade, we could still get a franchised player.

So the question I pose is...Who would you trade to get C. Woodson or A. Wilson now that this trade "sets the standard" for this year?

HOLY SHIZNIT!!! Just saw this.... Mardi Gras kept me busy on floats and more importantly in the cooler. What the F is Denver thinking? I wouldn\'t give Portis up for anything. I can\'t think of one player that I would take for Clinton Portis. God, that was dumb. This could have saved Gibbs.

It makes a little sense if you figure that Portis was going to hold out for big $$$ this year anyway. Denver doesn\'t have the cap room and really has a LOT of holes they have to fill this offseason.

Denver also has to make a real run in the playoffs. Shanahan may find himself on the hot seat pretty early this year. Champ would give them a shut down corner to deal with half the field in a division with teams that live on throwing the ball. Franchising Wilson, trading for Champ and mananging to keep Wilson would let them make some key moves with the draft and unload a guy who was probably going to hurt their already ailing cap number anyway.

I\'m not sure that Griffin is able to take the load all by himself, but I would guess that Shanahan may try to wait until the Bengals dump Dillon and try to pick him up cheap. Dillon is probably good for 1200 yards or so in Denver\'s offense and still gives them a chance to win right now. The other problem is that most skill position guys have one foot into retirement anyway. I\'d also guess that Shanahan may try and use round one to pick out a replacement for Rod Smart, Ed McCafferey (Rashaun Woods maybe?) or try to trade up for Kellen Winslow. If they could get Champ, they could probably let the defense ride until next season and try to draft out of the deep WR pool in this year\'s draft.

Would I be willing to trade Portis? No, I think you\'d have to be on crack to do that. But it does make some sense if Shanahan is trying to hang onto his job. And it does allow him to start making meaningful moves on the age of his WR/TE corps. If I were Shanahan, I\'d think it would be a hugely successful draft to land Kellen Winslow, Rashaun Woods and a Lee Evans (doubt he lasts that long) or a Devery Henderson.

Denver has been able to plug in any RB they want and get 1000yds. This trade makes a ton of sense. With the 2nd round pick they get, they could draft a Greg Jones and have another 1500yd RB, plus have a top corner in Champ Bailey.

For any other team, this would of been bad. But this is Denver, and they always find a good RB.

BTW, Al Wilson signed a 7-year deal yesterday.

Portis is cheaper than Bailey now so I don\'t buy the money argument, and Portis is a popular young star in the making. Griffin better blow up this season or I\'ll bet you Shanahan just cost himself his job. I\'d say that if the Broncos didn\'t make the playoffs this season then he\'d really be feeling the heat, but he would probably get another year (undeserving in my opinion). With this Portis move, he may end up tipping the scales against himself enough to be out after this year if they don\'t make the playoffs.

It\'s Denver.. it\'s the blocking scheme, not the RB....
not saying Portis sucks or anything...
