Meachem breaks out against Lions

NEW ORLEANS — For the past few games, veteran wide receiver Robert Meachem seemed almost like a forgotten man in the New Orleans Saints’ high-powered offense.

After catching 22 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns in the Saints’ first five games, his production tailed off to just seven catches for 131 yards and a lone touchdown in their next six games.

Then, against the Detroit Lions on a national stage Sunday night at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, quarterback Drew Brees suddenly had eyes for Meachem.

Meachem caught three of six passes targeted for him for a team-high 119 yards and one touchdown to help the Saints (9-3) score a 31-17 victory and increase their lead to two games over the Atlanta Falcons (7-5) in the NFC South.

Meachem’s 67-yard catch-and-run with 8:03 remaining in the first half increased the Saints lead to 17-0 and, in the process, made Lions’ right cornerback Eric Wright look awfully foolish.

Meachem caught the ball down the right seam at the Lions’ 35, then thoroughly frustrated Wright as he zig-zagged his way into the end zone.

“That was fun,’’ said Meachem, the team’s No. 1 pick in 2007 from the University of Tennessee. “I caught the ball and looked to my right, then I looked to my left and I saw an open field. After that, I just had fun.

"Any Given Sunday" applies to our offensive weapons.

Drew is pretty good y'all!

There is a thread in this web site where some of the disloyal fair weather "fans" were calling for Meach to be cut earlier in the season.

They should be required to have a tattoo on their forehead that reads, "disloyal fair weather fan" or move to the suburbs of Atlanta next door to some guy named Cleetus who has relatives who were in the Deliverance movie.

Meach is the man. The coaches and his team mates know this. Some of us know this. Others, not so much. Some of you owe him an apology but are you huMan enough to admit it... is another story.

Next game Henderson....seems it is his turn in the cycle

Coverages and schemes dictate which packages are used and which receiver will get the most looks.
Meachem finally got the knod and he did great.
When teams over protect against Graham in the middle and Sproles out of the backfield,
the outside edges and deep routes will come open: Colston, Meachem, and Henderson.
It's just a matter of time. Our offense is an equal opportunity exposer of weaknesses.

It is so awesome knowing that opposing defenses can gameplan to take out our one threat at WR because we have 4-5 of them!

I get this sense as well. Or maybe Colston's! It's like SP and Drew devise plays to make one player shine and this in turn gives that player a reason to work like he** for the next guy. I see Meachem sticking around for a little while longer and all of the fair weather fans are just that. Don't need 'em on our boards.

"Meach-'em will leave 'em!!:bng:

Meach is def one of the most talented WR on the team and he did great last night. Because of how much we spread the ball he will probably never make a pro bowl.

Choupique,

I thought about that very thread while watching last night.

pumpkindriver 12-05-2011 08:02 PM

I remember that thread as well, I never thought we should cut him either. And yeah as far as our offense goes, part of what makes it so great is opponents never know which guy is gonna be featured.
