Titans challenge safeties vs. Saints' Graham

“When you’re 6-7 and 6-4 (like receiver Marques Colston) and you’re throwing it over little bitty guys, why wouldn’t you go over the middle,” said Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray. “I don’t think we’ve covered a 6-6, 6-7 tight end. The thing is the safety has got to come down and hit him and help (McCarthy) out.

“The biggest thing I think in this league is, you’ve got to start putting fear in guys’ hearts from throwing the ball in the middle of the field. If that means getting a letter from the commissioner on Monday, that means getting a letter from the commissioner. But a lot of times you’ve got to let these guys know, you’re not going to be able to throw the ball over the middle of the football field. This is not a basketball, this is a football game, so the ball doesn’t go down the middle of our field. And that’s what safeties should do in this league.”

Have the Titans safeties done enough to send that message this season?

“Of course not,” Gray said. “Or they wouldn’t be throwing the ball down the middle of the field.”

Both of the Titans starting safeties are 6 foot and 200-210 pounds. For some reason, I don't think Graham is too worried...

I'll probably get sacrificed for this but I think Jenkins has a lot of room for improvement and I do mean a lot. He doesn't have the it factor that Sharper had. Sharper read the game better but he had a lot more to time to work on his instincts and skills. Jenkins can bring the tough hits but he can miss just as often. Is he above average? Slightly maybe.jmho
But I do think he has a ton of upside. Remember he's a converted corner......transitions take time.

If someone could have stopped it by now they would have.

If we run it down their throat and break them down they will start to play run then Brees can show then why he is Brees. Run, Run, Run.......

Until lately, Jenkins was our worst DB. He's coming on strong down the stretch though. I hope he continues improving becasue so far he's been underachieving. I think he can play much better.

Well... I have been saying this for well over a month. It's caught on!

To me our entire secondary has regressed. Earlier in the year I thought they looked great but also they were not challenged with the deep ball as often as they have been lately. As far as Jenkins he is the leader of the secondary and I don't think he has made good decisions for quite a few games. He made 2-3 plays and thats it. For a starting safety he drastically needs to improve it's crunch time in case he hasn't noticed.

Personally, I'm loving the way our safeties are playing lately. They seem to be where they need to be in coverages and sniffing out the ball.

Of course there's always room for improvement, but Harper and Jenkins are jelling nicely. Daddy liiiiiike! :)

Comparing Jenkins to Sharper, that's 10 yrs of expereince to his 3ish. I think he's doing pretty darn good at this point. He's just starting his career. He also is getting little help in the pass rush dept. That's where it all starts.
