Saints defense doing enough to help pick up wins

ASHVILLE, Tenn. ― Jo-Lonn Dunbar says Gregg Williams preaches to the Saints defense about getting last chances, about taking advantage of opportunities when they present themselves.

Sunday, against Tennessee, the defense got plenty of opportunities to take advantage of last chances.

And while most people will wonder, indeed, most people will say the defense is what will hold the Saints back, think of it this way – in the last month and a half, playoff-clinching time, New Orleans’ defense has done what it had to do.

Against the Titans, that meant coming up with a heart-pounding stop on third-and-goal from New Orleans’ 5-yard line.

The Saints won 22-17 and really, that’s all that matters.

Our front 7 stopped the Titans run game period, that says alot for them because they are a run 1st team and their O-line takes pride in that. I'm proud we handled them the way we did, it tells me the we are improving. Now the secondary has caught my attention to the point I need a bottle of Rolaids each game. They are not playing up to their capability, not even close. It has to be fixed. Payton is going to have to put his foot in Gregg Williams a$$ now, we have come to far for what is suppose to be the solid core of our D to let us down now. We have good players so they should be playing good in my opinion.

Did the Defense do enough to win or did the Titans just not get it done? Porters defense on the goal line slant was perfect. The coverage with no time left was also perfect. Why they were in that position to start with is a whole other problem. They did shut down CJ which was also huge. Titans climbed back into this game too quickly on long passing plays that looked easy. This will not get it done if we get to Green Bay. The game shouldn't have been this close anyway (officials), but the Saints did enough to win and that is the bottom line.

I even like their play for a change.

I mean its a start in the right direction.

Robinson should no longer be on the field as a starter or second string if we can help it.

I've gotta agree all the way. With the exception of 5-6 plays, they looked really good. It sure seems like sending a linebacker to cover Washington was a lot like taking a knife to a gun fight. As far as Robinson goes, the Eagles may be wholesaling some cornerbacks at the end of the season.....

Also -- I think that this game would have looked much different, if it had been Hasselback out there the whole day, who was the guy they had prepared for. When Locker went in, it was basically "throw the game plan we worked on all week, out the window" time, so of course the Titans threw the kitchen sink at the Saints and the defense did not look as good as they could potentially have been. Doesn't EXCUSE them, or let them off the hook, but it does kinda EXPLAIN some of the unexpected big plays they gave up late in the day.

But holding them to 1 of 10 on third down.

and holding Johnson, to 23 yards is kind of astounding. I would not have predicted either of those stats with this defense.

Patrick Robinson and johnny Patrick should switch role

Put Robinson on special teams and give the kid some playing time at nickel, he supposedly looked good in preseason, we certainly wouldn't see a drop in pass defense that's for sure

seems like he has actually dropped of since the beginning of the year, and he is not playing any smarter. Very few guys were going to bring CJ down on the 4th down play, but he goes for the all-out tackle instead of trying to contain and wait for help.

hard to believe we are going to have to spend another high draft choice at DB next year

At the end of the day we're 10-3.
