The only way it happens is if the 49ers lose both of their next two games against the Steelers and SeaHawks. The Steelers are really motivated since the Ravens loss last night opens the door wide open for them to get the AFC #1 seed, and the SeaHawks have to win out and the Lions lose out to get into the playoffs. With the Lions playing the now surging Chargers and a week 17 showdown with the Packers in Lambeau, the Hawks actually have a chance if they can find a way to overcome the 9ers.
The Saints will have a 1000 percent better chance of winning the SB this year if they get the bye. Only two playoff games; a possibility of hosting the NFCCG; at most only one road game; and a week off are all boosters to their chances.
As long as #2 is available to the Saints and they have not clinched the slot, Brees should play. If that's until the last play of the Panthers game on New Year's day, Brees should play. If #2 becomes unavailable, or the Saints clinch the #2 (as #1 is already out of reach), then and only then should we talk about resting starters.
We still need to win the division. We are down to one game at a time, one goal at a time.
I'll be watching the Steelers/9ers game with great interest tonight.
